Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleaning up in the Valkyrie Suite was not how I intended to end my career but somehow my life plan turned out to be a dodgy GPS system. It led me up a blind alley and now there’s no signal... Cleaning Up in the Valkyrie Suite follows the journey of protagonist, Prudence Baxter, who loses her long-standing job as a P.A, in the wake of the 2008 banking crisis. Hitting a brick wall, how will she manage when her life takes a dramatic turn, leaving Prudence feeling lost and alone? If you’re single, 55 and unemployed you’re a nobody, right? Taking on this new persona, Prudence believes there is only one way to go: watching daytime T.V. in her pyjamas, sifting through the items in the close-to-sell-by-date tubs in the supermarkets and resisting the offers of pay-day loan sharks. Life has become grim. Making matters worse, she learns she might even be forced to sell her family home. Everything seems to be out of control... After searching relentlessly for work, Prudence eventually finds a new job, a role her previous self would have turned her delicate nose up at! She begins work as a chamber maid in a newly opened hotel. Dressed in her unflattering uniform, she feels her self-esteem and social status have disappeared off the scale. What’s more, her salary will leave no margin to set aside for all those little disasters that life frequently throws at her and expects her to pay for. However, during her time cleaning the Valkyrie Suite, she begins to suspect that the new hotel, and its T.V. personality owner, are not really what they seem to be... Although her natural nosy self draws her into an investigation and suddenly her daily cleaning round is interrupted by bizarre encounters, threats and even personal danger, Prudence finally has the chance to realise one of her long-held dreams...

Download or read book Messy Ethnographies in Action written by Alexandra Plows and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2019-02-04 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection of chapters showcases original and interdisciplinary ethnographic fieldwork in a range of international settings; including studies of underground pub life in North East England; Finnish hotels; and bio-scientific institutions in the Amazonian rainforest. Informed by John Law’s concept of ethnographic “mess,” this book makes a unique, empirically-informed, contribution to an understanding of the social construction of knowledge and the role that ethnography can and does play (Law, 2004). It provides a range of colourful snapshots from the field, showing how different researchers from multiple research environments and disciplines are negotiating the practicalities, and epistemological and ethical implications, of “messy” ethnographic practice as a means of researching “messy” social realities. Law notes that “social…science investigations interfere with the world…things change as a result. The issue, then, is not to seek disengagement but rather with how to engage” (ibid p14). Drawing on their own situated experiences, the book’s contributors address the “messy” implications of this and also explore the (equally messy) issue of why engage. They reflect on the process of undertaking research, and their role in the research process as they negotiate their own position in the field. What is ethnography “for”? What impact should, or do, we have in the field and after we leave the research site? What about unintended consequences? When (if ever) are we “off duty?” What does “informed consent” mean in a constantly shifting, dynamic ethnographic context? Is ethnography by its very nature a form of “action research?” By providing a wide range of situated explorations of “messy ethnographies,” the book presents a unique, hands-on guide to the challenges of negotiating ethnography in practice, which will be of use to all researchers and practitioners who use ethnography as a method.

And all of it is just what I needed for my celebration weekend after graduating with my master’s. It’s our last girls’ weekend before my friends and I go our separate ways, and it’s going to happen with a bang. Literally. Hopefully. It would be a first. The desire was to keep things casual, but our connection is far too deep for that. Him being ex-military and me being an Army brat. The rules we each set up are shattered thanks to the raging passion between us. But eventually, I have to go home. What I never expected in a million years was that he might follow me. Enough swimming in the shallow end of the pool. We’re diving in deep. This is book 1 in a 3 book series. You will have to read books 2 and 3 to complete the story.
