Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Nuclear weapons, since their conception, have been the subject of secrecy. In the months after the dropping of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the American scientific establishment, the American government, and the American public all wrestled with what was called the "problem of secrecy," wondering not only whether secrecy was appropriate and effective as a means of controlling this new technology but also whether it was compatible with the country's core values. Out of a messy context of propaganda, confusion, spy scares, and the grave counsel of competing groups of scientists, what historian Alex Wellerstein calls a "new regime of secrecy" was put into place. It was unlike any other previous or since. Nuclear secrets were given their own unique legal designation in American law ("restricted data"), one that operates differently than all other forms of national security classification and exists to this day. Drawing on massive amounts of declassified files, including records released by the government for the first time at the author's request, Restricted Data is a narrative account of nuclear secrecy and the tensions and uncertainty that built as the Cold War continued. In the US, both science and democracy are pitted against nuclear secrecy, and this makes its history uniquely compelling and timely"--

Book Don t Be Such a Scientist

Download or read book Don t Be Such a Scientist written by Randy Olson and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2010-05-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You think too much! You mother F@$#%&* think too much! You're nothing but an arrogant, pointy-headed intellectual — I want you out of my classroom and off the premises in five minutes or I'm calling the police and having you arrested for trespassing." — Hollywood acting teacher to Randy Olson, former scientist After nearly a decade on the defensive, the world of science is about to be restored to its rightful place. But is the American public really ready for science? And is the world of science ready for the American public? Scientists wear ragged clothes, forget to comb their hair, and speak in a language that even they don't understand. Or so people think. Most scientists don't care how they are perceived, but in our media-dominated age, style points count. Enter Randy Olson. Fifteen years ago, Olson bid farewell to the science world and shipped off to Hollywood ready to change the world. With films like Flock of Dodos: The Evolution-Intelligent Design Circus (Tribeca '06, Showtime) and Sizzle: A Global Warming Comedy (Outfest '08), he has tried to bridge the cultural divide that has too often left science on the outside looking in. Now, in his first book, Olson, with a Harvard Ph.D. and formerly a tenured professor of marine biology at the University of New Hampshire, recounts the lessons from his own hilarious-and at times humiliating-evolution from science professor to Hollywood filmmaker. In Don't Be Such a Scientist, he shares the secrets of talking substance in an age of style. The key, he argues, is to stay true to the facts while tapping into something more primordial, more irrational, and ultimately more human. In a book enlivened by a profane acting teacher who made Olson realize that "nobody wants to watch you think," he offers up serious insights and poignant stories. You'll laugh, you may cry, and as a communicator you'll certainly learn the importance of not only knowing how to fulfill, but also how to arouse.

Book The Atomic Times My H Bomb Year at the Pacific Proving Ground

Download or read book The Atomic Times My H Bomb Year at the Pacific Proving Ground written by Michael Harris and published by Word International. This book was released on 2019-05-05 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catch-22 with radiation. Area 51 meets Dr. Strangelove. Except it really happened. The Atomic Times is the absolutely insane, incredibly f*cked-up, but true, eyewitness story of what happened in 1956 on a tiny island in the South Pacific when over 1600 young soldiers (including me) were turned into atomic guinea pigs by the US Army. We were sent there to “observe” this nuclear test series, called Operation Redwing. Wearing only T-shirts and shorts and without any other protective gear while Army brass and nuclear scientists wore Hazmat suits, we were exposed to radiation and fallout. Operation Redwing, the biggest and baddest of America's atmospheric nuclear weapons test series, mixed saber rattling with mad science, while overlooking the cataclysmic human, geopolitical and ecological effects. But mostly, it just messed with guys' heads. Major Maxwell, who put Safety First, Second and Third. Except when he didn't. Berko, the wise-cracking Brooklyn Dodgers fan forced to cope with the H-bomb and his mother's cookies. Tony, who thought military spit and polish plus uncompromising willpower made him an exception. Carl Duncan, who clung to his girlfriend's photos and a dangerous secret. Major Vanish, who did just that. In THE ATOMIC TIMES, Michael Harris welcomes readers into the U.S. Army's nuclear family where the F-words were Fallout and Fireball. In a distinctive narrative voice, Harris describes his H-bomb year with unforgettable imagery and insight into the ways isolation and isotopes change men for better—and for worse. A New York Times bestseller and a Pulitzer Prize nominee, THE ATOMIC TIMES was originally published in hardcover by Random House. "A gripping memoir leavened by humor, loyalty and pride of accomplishment. A tribute to the resilience, courage and patriotism of the American soldier." —Henry Kissinger "Harris' frank and disturbing descriptions of the criminally irresponsible proceedings on Eniwetok, and the physical and mental pain he and others endured, constitute shocking additions to atomic history. Amazingly enough, given his ordeal, Harris remains healthy." --Booklist "An entertaining read in the bloodline of Catch-22, Harris achieves the oddest of victories: a funny, optimistic story about the H-bomb. Harris uses a chatty, dead-pan voice that highlights the horrifying absurdity of life on the island: the use of Geiger counters to monitor scrambled eggs' radiation level, three-eyed fish swimming in the lagoon, corroded, permanently open windows that fail to keep out the radioactive fall-out and men whose toenails glow in the dark." --Publisher's Weekly From the author: Three-eyed fish swimming in the lagoon. Men whose toenails glow in the dark. Operation Redwing where the F words were Fallout and Fireball. In 1956, I was an army draftee sent to the Marshall Islands to watch 17 H-bomb tests. An "observer," the Army called it. In plain English: a human guinea pig. I knew at the time that the experience could make a fascinating book, and I wrote a novel based on it while I was still there. The problem was that Eniwetok was a security post. There were signs everywhere impressing on us that the work going on (I mopped floors, typed, filed requisitions and wrote movie reviews for the island newspaper “All the news that fits we print”) was Top Secret. “What you do here, what you see here, what you hear here, when you leave here leave it here.” I was afraid they would confiscate the manuscript if they found it but a buddy who left Eniwetok before I did concealed the pages in his luggage. When he got back to the States, he mailed those pages to my father so I had what turned out to be a very rough draft. What was wrong with the book? Let me count the ways. I didn’t know how to write action, plot and character. I did know how to leave out everything interesting that was happening around me. Back in the States after my discharge, I thought about writing Version #2 but for ten years, I had nightmares about the H-bomb almost every night. I survived the radiation (unlike some of my friends), but the memories were also a formidable foe. I tried to forget and more or less succeeded. My perspective gradually changed over the years and I began to remember what I had tried to forget: We were told we had to wear high density goggles during the tests to avoid losing our sight but the shipment of goggles never arrived—the requisition was cancelled to make room for new furniture for the colonel's house. We were told we had to stand with our backs to the blast—again to prevent blindness. But the first H-bomb ever dropped from a plane missed its target, and the detonation took place in front of us and our unprotected eyes. Servicemen were sent to Ground Zero wearing only shorts and sneakers and worked side by side with scientists dressed in RadSafe suits. The exposed military men developed severe radiation burns and many died. The big breakthrough came when enough years had passed and I had overcome the anger and the self-pity resulting from the knowledge that I and the men who served with me had been used as guinea pigs in a recklessly dangerous and potentially deadly experiment. At last I had the perspective to understand my nuclear year in its many dimensions and capture the tragedy and the black humor that came along with 17 H-bomb explosions. In addition, certain significant external realities had changed. Top Secret documents about Operation Redwing had been declassified. I learned new details about the test known as Tewa: the fallout lasted for three days and the radiation levels exceeded 3.9 Roentgens, the MPE (Maximum Permissible Exposure). Three ships were rushed to Eniwetok to evacuate personnel but were ordered back after the military raised the MPE to 7. That, they reasoned, ensured everyone's safety. I made contact with other atomic veterans who told me about their own experiences and in some cases sent me copies of letters written to their families during the tests. As we talked, we also laughed: about officers who claimed Eniwetok was a one year paid vacation; about the officer who guarded the political purity of the daily island newspaper by deleting "pinko propaganda," including a speech by President Eisenhower. By now, Ruth knew the material almost as well as I did and provided crucial perspective and detailed editing expertise. At last, I was able to pull all the strands together. After 50 years, I was able write the book I had wanted to in the beginning. Having struggled to write a memoir for so long and having been asked for advice by others contemplating writing a memoir, I can pass along a bit of what I learned along the way. Make sure you have enough distance from the experience to have perspective on what happened. Exposure to radiation and the resulting reactions—anger, terror, incredulity—produce powerful emotions that take time to process. Figure out how to use (or keep away) from your own intense feelings. In the case of the H-Bomb tests, anger and self-pity were emotions to stay away from. So was the hope of somehow getting “revenge.” Sometimes the unexpected works. For me, finding humor in a tragic situation— the abject military incompetence in planning and executing the H-Bomb tests—freed my memory and allowed me to write about horrific experiences. Figure out (most likely by trial and error) how much or how little of yourself you want to reveal. Keywords: memoir, veterans, H-bomb, US Army, black humor, dark humor, military memoir, nuclear bombs, radiation, fission, fusion, fallout, danger, suspense, atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs, H-bomb, South Pacific, Eniwetok, Marshall Islands

Book The Atomic Bomb in Japanese Cinema

Download or read book The Atomic Bomb in Japanese Cinema written by Matthew Edwards and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy years after the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan is still dealing with the effects of the bombings on the national psyche. From the Occupation Period to the present, Japanese cinema had offered a means of coming to terms with one of the most controversial events of the 20th century. From the monster movies Gojira (1954) and Mothra (1961) to experimental works like Go Shibata's NN-891102 (1999), atomic bomb imagery features in all genres of Japanese film. This collection of new essays explores the cultural aftermath of the bombings and its expression in Japanese cinema. The contributors take on a number of complex issues, including the suffering of the survivors (hibakusha), the fear of future holocausts and the danger of nuclear warfare. Exclusive interviews with Go Shibata and critically acclaimed directors Roger Spottiswoode (Hiroshima) and Steven Okazaki (White Light/Black Rain) are included.

Book excerpt: First published in 1998, Making Enemies was the opening volume in Francis Bennett's Cold War trilogy. 'For all of us now the Cold War is history... What interested me as a writer was how we survived. What went on behind the scenes?... I went looking for my own fictional explanations for historical events.' Francis Bennett Making Enemies centres on the race for the hydrogen bomb in 1947. Russia and the West, wartime allies, are now bitter enemies. Soviet Colonel Andropov tries to stall Britain's development of a nuclear deterrent, and a young British army officer unwittingly becomes enmeshed in his conspiracy. '[ Making Enemies] is more than the intelligent reader's spy thriller... Like all the best historical novels, the authenticity of background and time lend the story added credibility. I have never read the relationship between an intelligence officer and his pawn described so well.' Phillip Knightley, Daily Mail

Book Run It Might Be Somebody

Download or read book Run It Might Be Somebody written by Ephraim Romesberg and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-10-24 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Summary of Run It Might Be Somebody By Ephraim Romesberg The book covers a span of over 70 years starting with the author as a shy sickly boy who was the last of 11 children living on a farm during the great depression and ends with the author as a 74 year old man, who still runs ultra distant marathons. In the first chapter, the author presents stories and anecdotes, often in a humorous way, to describe some of the joys and hardships of growing up in a large family during the great depression. Compared to today, life was very different then with no TVs, very few radios, no computers, no running water in the home (except in the pantry where there was a hand pump), and very few toys or luxuries of any kind. Also, and perhaps more significantly, kids, for the most part, were given chores and did not have time to get into trouble. There were no drugs, no gangs, and no boredom. Being the youngest in the family and somewhat sickly, the author was to some extent given some slack on farm chores. Even so, he had daily chores to do starting from a very early age such as milking cows, driving the old model T truck, fetching the cows, cleaning stables, feeding livestock, driving a tractor, and helping wherever help was needed. The book describes the one room school house that all kids in the area attended at that time. The authors dad had to quit such a school while in third grade to work on the farm when his father died leaving the family without any money or food. His mother completed school through eighth grade which was all that most people considered necessary in those days especially for women. So there was little or no pressure from the parents to go to school after that. As a result, the three oldest boys in the family never went past eighth grade. There were other reasons to stay home and the most important one was they had no decent clothing. The book tells about the Authors mother removing the white stripes from an old pair of band pants and one of the three boys who never completed high school, then removing all the little white threads so that he could wear the pants to school. He also had no decent shoes so he added home made soles to the bottoms of a pair of his work shoes by attaching them with roofing nails so that he could make the long four mile walk to the school. After several trips the nails poked through the bottoms of the shoes and wore holes in his feet. Because of that and the lure of the upcoming hunting season, and the need to work on the farm, he quit school after only a month or so. Except for the three oldest boys, all of the kids completed high school and several went on to college. The book describes such things as making hay the old fashioned way, husking corn by hand, hoeing corn and then picking rocks while resting, butchering a pig, delivering baby pigs and calves, threshing to separate the grain from the straw, and the authors Mom squirting milk straight from the cows tit at cats and grandkids.. Also described are how the young boys in the family learned to handle a team of horses when they were only 10 years old, how one of the boys accidentally cut off his little sisters finger, how an uncle lost his leg to the stump puller, how the author, when he was only eight years old, tried to explain to a blind preacher how to use the out house and the Sears Roebuck catalog which was used instead of toilet paper. Also described, and a little more on the lighter side, one of the authors sisters claimed that you havent lived until you ran barefoot through a cow pasture and felt the warmth of a fresh cow patty ooze up between your toes. The early chapters also describe the authors time in the US Navy where he was sea sick every time the ship left the dock. Hunting stories tell of deer hunting with more failures than successes. Book excerpt: A pilot races through the sky to stop a nuclear catastrophe in this “compelling” thriller by the New York Times–bestselling author of Pandora’s Clock (People). Vivian Henry hasn’t heard her ex-husband’s voice in three years, but it still fills her with fear. Dangerous and brilliant, Dr. Rogers Henry is calling because he’s dying. He offers Vivian a fortune in insurance money if she’ll carry out one final task for him: Take the Medusa device to Washington, DC. The Medusa is his life’s work—a thermonuclear bomb capable of knocking out all modern technology in the country—and he wants her to deliver it to the Pentagon before it falls into the wrong hands. Cargo plane captain Scott McKay is miles above the ground when the Medusa begins to speak. A recording of Dr. Henry’s voice announces that the device is active and about to explode. Book excerpt: James B. Osbon This biography has been written primarily to be read by the people of Aiken, South Carolina, who plan to read or have read the book, "Sand River." Because of that, it contains more local Aiken detail than a usual author biography would. I was born in Aiken in the spring of 1938 at a time that the Great Depression was lessening and before serious war started in Europe or Asia. The Aiken County Hospital, on Richland Avenue, was the place, and I was brought home in a few days to a small bungalow on Columbia Drive, now known as Columbia Avenue. In 2000, our family donated this property to the city, and it is now known as Osbon Park. My father, Geddings Osbon, was already 37 years old, and my mother, Bessie Wilcher Osbon, was 29 when I arrived. They had been married since 1930, and were living in the house he built for her when they married. His own parents lived ¼ mile away on Hampton Avenue, near Bethany Cemetery. I had three brothers (Bobby, Julian, Tony) and a sister (Carolyn) while I was growing up, with me being wedged tightly between Bobby and Julian. Geddings had been in business with his father, Nathaniel, and his brother, Arthur, on Laurens Street in downtown Aiken. Their business was Osbon Tire Company, located in the same spot where Wells Fargo Bank is located in 2013. Shortly after I was born, my father decided to split away from his relatives, and opened a similar business on Broad Street in Augusta which he called Osbon Auto Supply Company. The year was approximately 1940. For the rest of his life (45 more years) he continued to live in that same house in Aiken and drove to Augusta to his businesses six days a week. I attended the Aiken County public schools, which meant Aiken Grammar School for grades 1-6 and Aiken High School for grades 7-12. I was 12 years old when the "bomb plant" entered our lives, and therefore have an excellent memory of how it affected just about everything in our town for the rest of my childhood. My athletic life took over a larger portion of my life than I ever anticipated when it began at age 10. By the time I graduated from Aiken High, I was playing football, basketball, baseball, track (for one year), and driving a school bus during my senior year. I was fortunate to secure a full scholarship to play Division I basketball at the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg, Virginia, and graduated from there in 1960 with a B.A. in Economics. As a college basketball player, I discovered that I was incredibly mediocre. Since I had joined ROTC when I enrolled at William and Mary, I owed the U.S. Army up to two years of my time after graduation. I was commissioned as an officer in the Infantry and spent most of my two years in Germany during 1961-1963. Interesting duties included assisting with the filming of "The Longest Day," a movie about the Allied D-Day landing in France in 1944, and later I became the Officer-in-Charge of Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin in the winter of 1963. For the curious researcher, references to these experiences are available on the Internet. After the Army, I married Beatrice McKay, a fellow W&M student from Norfolk, and began a computer career with IBM in Richmond, Virginia. We liked Virginia and stayed with IBM there for seven years, followed by seven years as co-founder of The Computer Company, also of Richmond, and another seven years as the chief officer of Information Technology for Blue Cross of Virginia. In 1975-76, I wrote a book in my spare time, a reference text called the "Silver Dollar Encyclopedia." By 1979, I had revised it completely and re-issued it as the Second Edition of the original book. Those two projects were extremely important in my writing development, and both were self-published successfully before self-publishing ever existed as an industry. While I was working on the second coin book in 1979, I made a promise to myself that I would write a book of fiction before
