Book All the Lost Voices

Download or read book All the Lost Voices written by Anthony Morelli and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004-03-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the Lost Voices is a first-person narrative that vacillates between the narrator’s present condition in a Mexico City brothel and his past experiences growing up fast and frightened in the unforgiving landscape of his hometown, Paterson, New Jersey. The parallel story lines are artfully interwoven creating a sometimes furious, sometimes apologetic exposition that encompasses not only a glimpse into the current psychosis of the protagonist, Tony De Felice, but a rearward view of the process that has brought this madness to surface. Alcoholism, violence, thieving, murder, exile, the imprisonment of his father, the loss of a fragile youth—all are addressed in drunken rants and gentle, often philosophical appeals to the reader, a tempestuous marriage of form and content offset by unexpectedly funny bits of wisdom and hilarious scenes of youthful indiscretion. The novel advances in several directions at once, from Nuevo Laredo to Mexico City to Tuxpan in the present tense, and from Paterson to Florida to Oregon to any and all points of the American map in the past tense, via car, train, plane, and bus. Yet in spite of this motion, the narrator remains emotionally frozen, bound to his past and locked within the parameters of his mind, feverishly writing his way towards an elusive understanding of himself.

Book Singing the Body Electric The Human Voice and Sound Technology

Download or read book Singing the Body Electric The Human Voice and Sound Technology written by Miriama Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing the Body Electric explores the relationship between the human voice and technology, offering startling insights into the ways in which technological mediation affects our understanding of the voice, and more generally, the human body. From the phonautograph to magnetic tape and now to digital sampling, Miriama Young visits particular musical and literary works that define a century-and-a-half of recorded sound. She discusses the way in which the human voice is captured, transformed or synthesised through technology. This includes the sampled voice, the mechanical voice, the technologically modified voice, the pliable voice of the digital era, and the phenomenon by which humans mimic the sounding traits of the machine. The book draws from key electro-vocal works spanning a range of genres - from Luciano Berio's Thema: Omaggio a Joyce to Radiohead, from Alvin Lucier's I Am Sitting in a Room, to Björk, and from Pierre Henry's Variations on a Door and a Sigh to Christian Marclay's Maria Callas. In essence, this book transcends time and musical style to reflect on the way in which the machine transforms our experience of the voice. The chapters are interpolated by conversations with five composers who work creatively with the voice and technology: Trevor Wishart, Katharine Norman, Paul Lansky, Eduardo Miranda and Bora Yoon. This book is an interdisciplinary enterprise that combines music aesthetics and musical analysis with literature and philosophy.

Book excerpt: The Third Book of Joy: Chain Dance is the second notebook of family lore, the collection of Joy's magical stories about her enslaved ancestors, researched by Professor Bo Wolfson in Burning Streams; the first notebook was published in Blood of Angels. When Heaven's heartbroken death in childbirth and Whip Man's torture at her father's hands lead her to resurrect herself as a death dancer, magic and terror drive the plantation's owner off of his land. Most of the men and women who labor on the haunted plantation flee, following Heaven's brother to his Louisiana swampland. But not everyone runs. A winged angel, a dancing coven of witches, a shapeshifting wildcat, and a ferocious pack of werewolves defend Solace's plantation from attack. Marauding patrollers and opportunists clash with the cunning, the blood thirst, and the supernatural powers unleashed by women determined to free themselves and the men and children they love.
