Book Teaching for Social Justice

Download or read book Teaching for Social Justice written by Connie E. North and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching for Social Justice? Voices from the Front Lines examines the process of four K-12 educators and a university-based researcher discussing, studying, and acting on the potential power of social justice. Through frequent, lively, and complex meetings, these educators examine their varying educational philosophies, practices, and teaching sites. Using experimental writing methods and qualitative methodology, North bridges the great divide between teacher and academic discourse. She analyzes the complex, interconnected competencies pursued in the name of social justice, including functional, critical, relational, democratic, and visionary literacies. In doing so, she reveals the power of cross-institutional, democratic inquiry on social issues in education.

Download or read book In Their Voices written by Rhonda M. Roorda and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many proponents of transracial adoption claim that American society is increasingly becoming "color-blind," a growing body of research reveals that for transracial adoptees of all backgrounds, racial identity does matter. Rhonda M. Roorda elaborates significantly on that finding, specifically studying the effects of the adoption of black and biracial children by white parents. She incorporates diverse perspectives on transracial adoption by concerned black Americans of various ages, including those who lived through Jim Crow and the Civil Rights era. All her interviewees have been involved either personally or professionally in the lives of transracial adoptees, and they offer strategies for navigating systemic racial inequalities while affirming the importance of black communities in the lives of transracial adoptive families. In Their Voices is for parents, child-welfare providers, social workers, psychologists, educators, therapists, and adoptees from all backgrounds who seek clarity about this phenomenon. The author examines how social attitudes and federal policies concerning transracial adoption have changed over the last several decades. She also includes suggestions on how to revise transracial adoption policy to better reflect the needs of transracial adoptive families. Perhaps most important, In Their Voices is packed with advice for parents who are invested in nurturing a positive self-image in their adopted children of color and the crucial perspectives those parents should consider when raising their children. It offers adoptees of color encouragement in overcoming discrimination and explains why a "race-neutral" environment, maintained by so many white parents, is not ideal for adoptees or their families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A paradigm-shifting book looking at the pervasive influence of silence and how we can begin to dismantle it in order to find our voices at home and at work Having a seat at the table doesn’t mean that your voice is actually welcome. Knowing something is wrong doesn't mean it's easy to speak up. In fact, there are incentives for many of us to stay silent. Why speak up if you know that it won’t be received well, and in fact, often makes things worse? In Unlearning Silence, Hering explores how we’ve learned to be silent, how we’ve benefited from silence, how we’ve silenced other people—and how we might choose another way. She teaches how to recognize and unlearn unconscious patterns so we can make more intentional choices about how we want to show up in at home and at work. Only by unlearning silence can we more fully unleash talent, speak our minds, and be more complete versions of ourselves… and help other people do the same. With compassion, clarity, and understanding, Hering guides readers through real-life examples and offers a concrete road map for doing this vital and challenging work.

Download or read book The Empower Program K 2 written by Rachel Baker and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Let’s face it—teaching can be stressful. In this generation of Common Core Standards and high-stakes testing, educators are often left without the time to plan positive behavioral supports or the sanity to cultivate compassionate relationships with their students. Even though they understand the critical relationship between behavior and instruction, they’re often left with the same hair-pulling question: How can I empower—rather than overpower—my students, while still keeping a controlled classroom so that I can teach and students can learn? The “Empower Program” delivers user-friendly strategies that are realistic for educators to implement and practical for their students to use. Included are: Classroom Scenarios “When this happens…” Research and Relevancy “Why did that happen…” Concrete Strategies “What can I do?” Ready-to-go Resources “How can I do this tomorrow?” This book is not going to antagonize teachers with theoretical concepts in ideal contexts; it is instead going to respect teachers and their classroom frustrations and provide them with practical steps that make buzzwords like “behavior management”…well…manageable.

Download or read book War or Common Cause written by Kimberly Anderson and published by IAP. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on bilingual education policy represents a multidimensional and longitudinal study of “policy processes” as they play out on the ground (a single school in Los Angeles), and over time (both within the same school, and also within the state of Georgia). In order to reconstruct this complex policy process, Anderson impressively marshals a great variety of forms of “discourse.” Most of this discourse, of course, comes from overheard discussions and spontaneous interviews conducted at a particular school—the voices of teachers and administrators. Such discourse forms the heart of her ethnographic findings. Yet Anderson also brings an ethnographer’s eye to national and regional debates as they are conducted and represented in different forms of media, especially newspapers and magazines. She then uses the key theoretical concept of “articulation” to conceptually link these media representations with local school discourse. The result is an illuminating account of how everyday debates at a particular school and media debates occurring more broadly mutually inform one another.
