Download or read book The Dead Man written by Nora Gold and published by Joel Goldman. This book was released on 2016 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dead Man is a compelling novel about a woman who is obsessed. Eve, a composer of sacred music and a music therapist, is well aware of the saying, "Physician, heal thyself," but she just can't seem to do this. For some unknown reason, she-- a sensible, intelligent professional-- can't recover from a brief relationship she had five years ago with a world-famous music critic named Jake. This obsession with Jake is a mystery to Eve's friends, and also to her. In an attempt to solve this mystery, she "returns to the scene of the crime": Israel, where Jake still lives, and where they first fell in love. There she revisits all their old haunts and struggles to complete the song cycle she started composing five years ago about Jake but hasn't been able to finish. Gradually the dark mystery behind their complex relationship begins to unravel. Eve discovers the forgotten childhood memories, losses, and desires that are encapsulated in her connection to Jake. And then, inspired by all the music she hears around her (including the singing of birds, the crying of babies, and the honking of cars), she succeeds in finally completing her song cycle and setting her obsession to rest. This novel, filled with music, dealing with themes of love, grief, early loss, and the power of art, will resonate deeply with anyone who has ever loved and lost, and will continue to resound and echo for a long time afterward.

Book Breaking the Chains of Familial Bondage

Download or read book Breaking the Chains of Familial Bondage written by Tony Duncan and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a true story about how lies can destroy a person's life as well as show just how self-righteous some family members can be when they only think of themselves. The following pages describe in some detail how a father very close to becoming a grandfather and at the best point ever in his 56 years of living could only watch while his life was destroyed. During the first three weeks there was a lot of confusion and emotional shock involved causing extreme anger, then suddenly I could almost feel the extreme anger and shock just leave my body as I began to step back and realize what was honestly happening. At various times when efforts were made to have discussions trying to resolve the issues that were tearing this family apart, these efforts would only find more desperation to continue the lies covering up the truth. Having been through a terrible divorce myself with young children involved I am aware of what a marriage can be like when one party spends so much energy to lie and cover up things they do not want the other half to know about. Now I will be forced to again leave behind everything I love.

Book Damaged Angels

Download or read book Damaged Angels written by Bonnie Buxton and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2010-06-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An adoptive mother writes the book she wishes had been available -- sympathetic, up-to-date, useful, hopeful and highly readable -- when her family welcomed a little girl not knowing that she struggled with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). When Bonnie and her husband adopted Colette, she was three years old. Big for her age, she had walked alone at eleven months, had excellent verbal skills, a thick mane of curly blonde hair and a sturdy little body. They were thrilled with their gregarious second daughter, a great sister for six-year-old Cleo. But although Colette was bright and delightful, a litany of problems soon presented itself. By the time she hit first grade, her parents were coping with her frequent stealing and lying, and her learning difficulties, which necessitated special education. At the age of fourteen, she discovered drugs and sex; by eighteen, in spite of the love and support provided by her adoptive family, she was a crack addict living on the streets. After seven frustrating years of consulting numerous therapists, a TV item gave Bonnie the answer -- and sent her on a quest for diagnosis and help for her daughter. In general, our society has little compassion for those thousands of individuals whose damaged brains lead them to crime, homelessness and addiction. Few realize that they behave as they do as the result of brain damage caused by their mothers’ drinking during pregnancy. FASD is Canada’s most common, most expensive, yet most preventable mental disability. FASD can be beaten, but as usual, education is key. This book is a tool that could help the 300,000 Canadians currently affected by FASD, and reduce the number of babies born with FASD in the future. -- FASD is a new umbrella term that includes Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAE), Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopmental Disorder (ARND) and Partial Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (pFAS). -- FASD is caused by women drinking alcohol while pregnant. -- So-called “moderate” drinking can do considerable damage to the fetal brain. -- Individuals with FASD may seem normal, but their damaged brains can result in learning disabilities, impulsivity, lying, stealing, tantrums, violence and aggression, inability to predict consequences or learn from experience, lack of conscience, and addictions. -- FASD is the biggest single cause of intellectual impairment in most industrialized countries. -- Research indicates that a high percentage of homeless people, and at least 25% of juvenile and adult offenders suffer from undiagnosed FASD. More than 50% of individuals with FASD will experience school drop-out, trouble with the law, addiction, and unemployment. More than 90% will experience mental health problems. -- The general public, not to mention many professionals, know very little about either FASD or the fact that no amount of alcohol in pregnancy has been established as safe for the fetus.

Book The People of Harmony Baptist Church

Download or read book The People of Harmony Baptist Church written by Bernadette Penelope Byrd and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The people in each chapter have gone through many problems, physical and mental abuse, death, suicide, murder, alcoholism, drugs, marriage, divorce, children and adoption. Sometime we as Christians forget that being a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable because God has forgiven the inexcusable in us. Let the truth be told, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the people that did you wrong or harmed you in anyway, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that – that situation is over, you cannot move forward and God cannot bless you and we all want to be blessed. *Matthew 6:14-15 “For if you forgive man and or woman when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But, if you do not forgive man and or woman their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” The sense of the reality of spiritual things, and the power to rest the thought upon them, is as various as the power of flight in different birds. See a great eagle soaring without effort high in the air, or circling with undazzled eyes towards the sun! A noble bird with such powers of flight and of sight pictures an affection for spiritual thought of the strongest, most searching kind, which rises highest above superficial appearances and takes the most comprehensive views of like, the most in accord with the Divine wisdom. *Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles.”
