No Shelter - Three battered soldiers trek through a wintery wasteland while something hunts them from the battlefield. Krampus the Generous - The good children get presents in the winter. The bad children get Krampus. Delicacy for a Giant - A hungry giant traps a woman and her sickly newborn. The House of Dreams and Promises - A tale of a warlord's lonely wife and the fool who loved her. The Shadows are Coming - When bandits raid her village, all one little girl can do is hide. The Cold Thing - Winter may bring snow, and leave blood in its wake. Serpent's Tongue - A witch's curse turns a woman's tongue as venomous as her words. The Horn of Plenty - In a plague-blasted land, one starving family finds a magic basket of everlasting food. Old Wolf and the Gremian - By sparing a fairy, a wolf expects to get food, but the fairy instead plans to get even. A Night Without Souls - Two makers of magic dolls want a night of peace in their noisy village, no matter the cost. Wedding the White Death - In the land of a thousand demons, Anzi feared only one. Melemity, Esty, and Lality - Three brothers desire a beautiful fairy bride, but other creatures have their sights set on the foolish men. The Fevering Child - No one wants Elise to be pregnant, not her father, not the priest, and not the three strange men who want her baby out. The Graveyard Agreement - Two impoverished boys stumble upon a deal that could make them more money than they ever dreamed. Thunder Horn and Fire Box - The demons Io and Nao have decided to steal the land's fire and thunder. Art of Begging - The secret to getting anything from anyone passes to a destitute woman before her journey through a nightmarish wilderness. Death Dance - A dying man's wager with Death leaves most of his children deformed, except two who inherit Death's power. At times amusing, at others unnerving, Don't Let the Fairies Eat You revels in the primal nature fairy tales once had, and invites you to enjoy the wildness of every story.

Book A Trojan Feast The Food and Drink Offerings of Aliens Faeries and Sasquatch

Download or read book A Trojan Feast The Food and Drink Offerings of Aliens Faeries and Sasquatch written by Joshua Cutchin and published by Anomalist Books. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: YOU'VE BEEN WARNED Accept food from faeries, and you'll never escape their realm, according to European folklore. Accept food from Sasquatch and you will forever be trapped in the spirit world, according to indigenous North American tales. And today, abductees-at least those who have returned-often report being offered strange beverages from their captors. Are these similarities mere coincidence, or is something more at play? In this outstanding example of scholarship on the unknown, Joshua Cutchin has created the world's first survey and analysis of the food and drink offered by aliens, faeries, and Sasquatch. The offerings are often not what they appear to be: some liquids have healing or aphrodisiac qualities, some foods expand awareness, and there are ointments that reveal an invisible world. Through his playful explorations of every possibility-from the outer regions of space to the inner sanctum of the human mind-A TROJAN FEAST offers new insight into our relationship with these strange creatures of the outer edge. "The humble subject of food in anomalistic accounts serves, in Cutchin's measured, learned, and lucid argument, as proof that high strangeness events may be uncertain and discordant, but not incomprehensible." - Thomas E. Bullard, folklorist (ret.), Indiana University, Bloomington "Joshua Cutchin has brought together a contemplative and truly unique folkloric analysis of the way that food and drink fits into the broader narrative of purported strange phenomena. In doing so, Cutchin provides, in the very truest sense, 'food for thought.'" - Micah Hanks, author of "Magic, Mysticism and the Molecule" JOSHUA CUTCHIN is a native of North Carolina with a long interest in forteana. He holds a Masters in Music Literature and a Masters in Journalism from the University of Georgia, and currently works as a public affairs specialist in the southeast. In addition to his media work, Cutchin is also a published composer and maintains an active performing schedule as a jazz and rock tuba player, having appeared on eight albums and live concert DVDs. A TROJAN FEAST is his first book.

This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although the influence of the Brothers Grimm on folklore in virtually every country in the West has been widely studied, a similar development in the early part of twentieth-century China is virtually unknown. This book collects and translates more than 40 tales selected from the "Lin Lan" series, published in China from the late 1920s to the early 1930s. The pseudonym "Lin Lan" was created in 1924, when a group of three literary stories about the legendary Xu Wenchang (1521-1593), himself the author of many literary works still popular today, were published in a morning newspaper. The success of this first attempt encouraged the creators to publish more folk tales and fairy tales, which ultimately played a major role in the development of modern folk literature in China. The series, written and developed by a Shanghai publisher under the pen name Lin Lan, was divided into three subgenres-minjian chuanshuo (folk legends/tales), minjian tonghua (folk fairy tales), and minjian qushi (comic folk tales)-published in 43 volumes containing nearly one thousand tales in all. The tales were collected the tales from oral storytellers throughout China in response to a call from the publisher, and combined elements of European fairy-tale literature with traditional Chinese narratives"--

Book The Golden Age of Folk and Fairy Tales

Download or read book The Golden Age of Folk and Fairy Tales written by and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, attitudes toward history and national identity fostered a romantic rediscovery of folk and fairy tales. This is the period of the Golden Age of folk and fairy tales, when European folklorists sought to understand and redefine the present through the common tales of the past, and long neglected stories became recognized as cultural treasures. In this rich collection, distinguished expert of fairy tales Jack Zipes continues his lifelong exploration of the story-telling tradition with a focus on the Golden Age. Included are one hundred eighty-two tales--many available in English for the first time--grouped into eighteen tale types. Zipes provides an engaging general Introduction that discusses the folk and fairy tale tradition, the impact of the Brothers Grimm, and the significance of categorizing tales into various types. Short introductions to each tale type that discuss its history, characteristics, and variants provide readers with important background information. Also included are annotations, short biographies of folklorists of the period, and a substantial bibliography. Eighteen original art works by students of the art department of Anglia Ruskin University not only illustrate the eighteen tale types, but also provide delightful—and sometimes astonishing—21st-century artistic interpretations of them.

Book The Irresistible Fairy Tale

Download or read book The Irresistible Fairy Tale written by Jack Zipes and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative new theory about fairy tales from one of the world's leading authorities If there is one genre that has captured the imagination of people in all walks of life throughout the world, it is the fairy tale. Yet we still have great difficulty understanding how it originated, evolved, and spread—or why so many people cannot resist its appeal, no matter how it changes or what form it takes. In this book, renowned fairy-tale expert Jack Zipes presents a provocative new theory about why fairy tales were created and retold—and why they became such an indelible and infinitely adaptable part of cultures around the world. Drawing on cognitive science, evolutionary theory, anthropology, psychology, literary theory, and other fields, Zipes presents a nuanced argument about how fairy tales originated in ancient oral cultures, how they evolved through the rise of literary culture and print, and how, in our own time, they continue to change through their adaptation in an ever-growing variety of media. In making his case, Zipes considers a wide range of fascinating examples, including fairy tales told, collected, and written by women in the nineteenth century; Catherine Breillat's film adaptation of Perrault's "Bluebeard"; and contemporary fairy-tale drawings, paintings, sculptures, and photographs that critique canonical print versions. While we may never be able to fully explain fairy tales, The Irresistible Fairy Tale provides a powerful theory of how and why they evolved—and why we still use them to make meaning of our lives.
