Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is theology often divorced from ministry? Why is ministry left bereft of a robust theology? Ray S. Anderson, a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary for over thirty years, has left a legacy of provocative reflections on these questions. In this book Christian Kettler provides a sure guide to major themes in the work of one of the most creative theological minds to have sought to integrate theology and ministry. Early experience on a South Dakota farm and in a California parish helped form the theologian whose radical incarnational theology of the "kenotic community" provided a new basis for a broader, risk-taking ecclesiology. Anderson also brought theological anthropology to the front of the agenda, and therefore into ministry to actual hurting human persons. His challenging theological reflections can provoke the mind, stir the heart, and guide compassionate and wise incarnational ministry. Each chapter ends with a case study from an actual life situation, to "test out" and work through the implications of Anderson's theology.

Book Don t Give up on Me

Download or read book Don t Give up on Me written by C. Victorya Grace and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-12-16 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Miguel walked into the house and didn’t smell the aroma of his mother’s cooking. He didn’t hear her humming as she cleaned, or his siblings playing loudly and running through the house. He stood at the door and listened for anything, any noise at all. He could not escape the feeling that something was wrong. He stood quietly and listened. Finally, he heard a plea in the kitchen, a small voice too afraid to speak louder because of what might happen if she did. Miguel knew that it was his mother and that she was in danger. He slowly moved toward the sound, his body against the cold concrete walls of his home. He knew he needed to not make a sound if he wanted to help his family. When he finally rounded the corner, the sight was horrifying. There, backed into the corner of the kitchen, was his mother crouched on the floor, cradling all seven of his brothers and sisters as they shook in horror. She was silently pleading as tears fell from her cheeks, her face wet, her dark hair sticky with blood and matted to her face. He saw the pan and what looked like oil and rice covering her bare feet. What he would remember most from that day was the terror in her eyes and plea from her lips to this man who stood over her with so much anger. She pleaded for him to leave the kids out of it, just leave her babies alone. She never understood why he did this to her. Miguel felt so much pain and anger in that moment that it blinded him, and his bravery took over. He immediately grabbed the only thing close, a butcher knife, and pointed it at the man who stood so tall and controlling over his mother—his father. He swung and attacked until his dad gave up and ran out the back open wall of the house. Miguel chased after him and screamed, “Don’t you ever come back here! We don’t need you! I am the man of this house now, and you are not welcome here!” From that moment on, he vowed to take care of his family, even if that meant leaving his home country and going to the United States of America. He had a dream, and he had a promise to keep to his family, himself, and his mom. Grace was facing something big. It wasn’t her first encounter with such a risk. She was surrounded by all her loved ones. She knew this day was coming, and she had dreaded it ever since her last doctor’s appointment. She also knew that she had to be strong for her sisters and brother. Unexpectantly, the nurse called her name. With great dread, she slowly stood, turned off her portable CD player, and lowered her headphones. She started to shake from anxiety as she went around the circle of her loved ones to hug them and tell them that she loved them. She would never forget the pain that she felt as she embraced her siblings; she couldn’t speak, couldn’t get the words out. When she finished with the goodbyes, her parents walked her into the pre-operating room to get her ready for the operation. Even when she was sedated, she still turned around on the stretcher as they wheeled her through the doors to stay looking at her mom and dad for as long as she could. Though her vision was blurry, her heart was lucid, and her emotions were high. She yearned to be anywhere but the hospital and wanted nothing more than to come back from this. They told her to count back from ten as they placed a mask that smelled like bubble gum over her face. She tried so hard to fight it but felt her eyes closing and her mind slipping away. Slowly, she counted, her eyes drooped, and she gave in. Two totally different worlds come together to form one in this novel that is based on true events. This is the love story of Miguel and Grace, one that shows a huge appreciation for life and the hardships that come with it. Love brought them together, and love will tear them apart.

Book Healing for the Heart

Download or read book Healing for the Heart written by Peggy Holt and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer, fibromyalgia, and rheumatoid arthritis are just a few of the chronic illnesses that plague many Americans, and Christians are not exempt. Living with a serious illness is not easy. The challenges extend far beyond the physical realm, and maintaining a strong Christian testimony is difficult. Growing in godliness and pleasing God do not come naturally. In the midst of such complex challenges, even the most mature Christians need help. They need more than just shared life stories or practical tips for facing their disease. They need more than poignant illustrations to inspire them or amusing anecdotes to make them laugh. While each of these aspects is helpful, what sufferers need most is the encouraging truth of the Bible. Only the supernatural, unchanging Word of God can give genuine comfort and effective help. Healing for the Heart is a devotional designed for Christians who are serious about seeking God's help in their time of illness. The entries are focused on Bible truths and are designed to provide encouragement, instruction, and gentle challenge. Strengthen your heart on a daily basis with this biblically-based and compassionately-shared truth.

Aldo Amedei is a successful journalist who has lost everything, even his dreams. The past is regret, the present is populated by monsters and ghosts, but he tries to follow that thread of light, that crazy desire that kept him alive, by running the New York marathon. He doesn’t even know why he thought of it; after all, he is a man who takes his car to drive a hundred metres. He starts running, like an escaped prisoner hunted by his nightmares. He falls, he gets up, he falls again and gets back on his feet. And each time it hurts more and more. But he doesn’t let go. For love, and with the love of Teresa, his young partner. Spitting out his soul along streets full of toil, angels and vultures, he comes back to life, to passion and to dreams. He’s helped by a doctor, a unexpected coach and a grandson even crazier than himself. He becomes another person, embedding people into his heart, along with laughter, surprises and new emotions. But his enemies don’t give up, they chase him, determined to bring him back into the black well of depression. There’s everything still to play for, as in the last challenge, between life and death: the 42 kilometres and 195 metres of the New York marathon. Against the wind and against everything. From Hell to Central Park.

Book excerpt: Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments.
