Book excerpt: Slonnie, already an experienced pilot in 1921, is happy to accept a flying job in Mexico after his own airplane blows away, apparently crushing a man suspected of fraud. Is there a connection to his new job? Slonnie likes the idea of being paid to leave town, until he discovers that Tampico can be far more dangerous than a simple airmail contract promised. The Lincoln boy might shrug off murderous Indians and ignore pot shots from the ground but he finds it a lot harder to survive a rigged bullfight. Beach landings at low tide are no problem and he can "bomb" the outlying oil fields with gold payrolls, hitting the target every time. Dubious local lawmen and shady connections back home, keen to sabotage his airplanes, prove trickier. Ultimately, he only manages to escape a firing squad by fleeing in drag. Mexico ought to be perfect flying country for a man who navigates by watching the shadow of a strut on his lower wing, since there are no railroad tracks to follow anyway. Within weeks, however, Slonnie would be happy to catch a train back to Nebraska.

She’s found a solution to thwart his greedy plans and the three of them flee Savannah in the middle of the night, but will they be able to live with the consequences? Living and trapping on the mountain above Mistletoe Falls is Gabe Miller’s dream life. Enough so, he spent nearly his entire inheritance, and the last eight years, building his own little slice of heaven among the Ponderosa pines. Now, he’s ready for someone to share that life with, so when other men in town send for a mail-order bride, he decides to join in. But when Holly arrives, he quickly learns she has a secret and now he must decide…is his new wife a blessing or a mistake? “Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has many—not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.” Charles Dickens. An immigration solicitor tasked with running the precious family law firm, Jamila is prone to being woken in the middle of the night by frantic phone calls from clients on the cusp of deportation. Working under the shadow of the government's 'hostile environment', she constantly prays and hopes that their 'determinations' will result in her clients being allowed to stay. With no time for friends, family or even herself (never mind a needy partner), Jamila's life feels hectic and out of control. Then a breakdown of sorts forces her to seek change - to pursue her own happiness while navigating the endless expectations that the world seems to have of her, and still committing herself to a career devoted to helping others. In this polyphonic, assured and character-driven debut, we meet the staff of Shah & Co Solicitors, who themselves arrived in the UK not too long ago, and their clients, more recent arrivals who are made to jump through hoops to create a life for themselves whilst trying to achieve some semblance of normality.

Download or read book Complex written by Santiago Vizcaíno Armijos and published by Grado Cero Editores. This book was released on 2022-11-09 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex follows the life of Willy, an Ecuadorian writer and student on scholarship in Malaga, Spain. In a wry and self-deprecating tone, the novel provides a first-person account of life as an Ecuadorian migrant in Spain. This fragmentary and often poetic meditation on the Ecuadorian identity crisis, and on the ways in which it intersects with masculinity and machismo, does not shy away from making the reader feel by turns amused and repulsed: Willy is a character who is difficult to love yet impossible to hate, a dizzying contradiction of removed analysis and unbridled emotion, of self-awareness and instinct. Willy's misadventures take him to strange and at times disturbing places, and this is not the stereotypical tale of life as a migrant. Rather—as the title hints at—it is something more obscure, more convoluted, more complex.

Carter. Fueled by American historical events from 1854-1884, The Dark Side of the Mountain follows the adventures of John Saxton and Marcus Brown, who fight as Union guerillas against the Confederacy and all it stands for. Major Horatio Garrow and his son, Lucas, are mad men full of hate and greed, dedicated to one cause - their own. Along with a supporting cast of unforgettable characters both real and imaginary, these men are caught up in a vicious web of murder, dark secrets, betrayal and intrigue where only survival matters. In Volume One: The Dark Side of the Mountain; a young John Saxton watches helplessly as brutal slavers throw human cargo overboard to avoid capture by the "Africa Patrol." From then on, the Boston shipping heir becomes an implacable abolitionist bent on destroying slavery in America. Confederate spies, traitors and the dreaded Deacon Gang are arrayed against him. Can Saxton and his beautiful black bride, Virginia, survive a dangerous game of espionage, treachery and betrayal that culminates in the "honeymoon from hell?" As the Civil War divides and devours a nation, a black American guerilla force is carried behind Confederate lines by a unique sinking ship. Led by a giant Maasai warrior, they fight a determined and deadly foe from the eastern seaboard of America to its vast western plains. Even as the horror of war explodes around them, the Maasai Rangers embrace a common dream deep within the heart of Dixie. In Volume Two: The Dark Side of the Mountain; John Saxton is captured and thrown into the horror of Salisbury prison. Pursued by Major Horatio Garrow and his hapless brute of a companion Harley Blackstone, can Saxton survive? From his father's grave, a vengeful Lucas Garrow is led on a torturous search for stolen treasure. But a love fueled by the "Cause" and poisoned by greed, leads to a deadly confrontation. With America facing total ruination by blackmail; a battle erupts between a drug-addicted Lucas Garrow allied with the Klan, a militant underground colony of religious zealots, and the forces of justice bent on self-destruction. It all comes to an explosive conclusion not only deep within the heart of the Ozarks, but on Elder Mountain, Tennessee, where a utopia called Harmony Farm faces a forest fire out of control. Could Saxton and Marcus survive in an alien world and still find another dream called 'home'?

Book excerpt: Outside Tokyo, a tuberculosis sanatorium in the village of K has a six-bed ward that the narrator, an aspiring poet, shares with a student of linguistics and budding writer named Shiomi. After the stubborn Shiomi insists on undergoing a dangerous surgical procedure and dies in the process, two notebooks turn up in his bed-sheets. Flowers of Grass unfolds as the narrator reads them, asking himself if Shiomi's death was a sort of suicide, and learning the details of his late friend's two great loves: for a brother and sister, both of whom reject him. Fukunaga himself spent seven years recuperating from tuberculosis following World War II, and drew on his own experiences to create a fully realized portrait of a young man of fastidious intelligence and great sorrow, and how it is possible, seeing reality from the side of death and despair, to still choose life.

Book TransformAble

Book excerpt: Avoid the deadly pitfalls that doom 70 percent of complex business transformations, with this easy-to-read and actionable roadmap to success. Never dull and extremely useful, TransformAble is for business transformation leaders who have no time to waste. Transformation is not easy. It’s complex, scary, and fraught with political and economic peril. Businesses stand to lose a lot, and many of them do. According to McKinsey, 70 percent of business transformations fail. Yet, business transformation is not optional, if an organization wants to survive. The world is constantly changing, and sooner or later something—disruptive technology, innovation, social change, major acquisitions, changing consumer behavior—will force an organization’s hand. Business transformation expert Angie Tuglus mines her decades of experience leading cross-function change and innovation initiatives at start-ups, Fortune 10 companies, and government agencies to write TransformAble. The result is a carefully honed five-phase framework for transforming high-level, visionary concepts into sustainable operating realities. Along the way, Tuglus illuminates the highest impact, and often least understood, aspects of successful transformation. This includes helping readers identify and avoid common pitfalls, as well as build thoughtful, engaging narratives that both keep the transformation on course and convince key players to believe and trust in the plan. Sharp, xkcd-style comics combine with the author’s wit, candor and deep expertise to make this book an entertaining page-turner as well as an indispensable guide, refreshing shift in tone from traditional, dry books on business transformation theory. Tuglus’s wealth of knowledge, straightforward approach, and sense of humor will help readers take ownership of their organization’s future—regardless of its size, industry, or product offering—and help them define, design, and execute lasting change. This may be the only book on business transformation that is fun to read and will leave readers better equipped to navigate the perils ahead.
