Book excerpt: Despite inheriting a moribund college football program, and half-empty stadium, Barry Alvarez never compromised his values, never flinched ? even after a 1-10 first season ? and never stopped believing in his blue print for success at the University of Wisconsin. By establishing a solid foundation, adhering to fundamentals and demanding an uncommon toughness from his players, Alvarez became the architect of three Rose Bowl triumphs in the ?90s and became the school's all-time winningest football coach. While changing the culture of the sport on the Madison campus, raising expectations to heretofore unthinkable levels, Alvarez left an indelible mark on the Badgers during his 16 seasons on the sidelines. Not only did Alvarez take over a Big Ten footwipe and build the program into national prominence, but he sustained the success by sticking to a plan rooted to his upbringing in Western Pennyslvania and his exposure to three legendary coaches, Nebraska's Bob Devaney, Iowa's Hayden Fry and Notre Dame's Lou Holtz. In his autobiography ? Don't Flinch ? Alvarez talks about the lessons that he learned from his mentors, the hurdles that he had to overcome as a young assistant and high school coach, and the challenge of taking over his own college program while living in a fishbowl, especially from his family's perspective. Alvarez maps out a strategy and game plan for young coaches who are seeking to achieve similar goals, and he also talks about his future as Wisconsin athletics director, and the future of college football. Alvarez's story, told in Alvarez's candid, pull-no-punches style, is written by Madison Capital Times columnist Mike Lucas, who also doubles as the color analyst for Badgerfootball and basketball on the UW radio network. Lucas, a Beloit native, enrolled at Wisconsin in 1968, and wrote for the Badger Herald and Daily Cardinal before joining the Capital Times as a full-time writer in 1971. Along with national, regional and local writing awards, Lucas has twice been named Sportswriter of the Year in Wisconsin. Lucas is entering his 12th season on the radio network. In addition, he hosts a weekly radio talk show on WIBA and a weekly television show on UPN-14 and WISC-3 which is also seen in other markets around the state.

Book excerpt: All David Flinch ever wanted was a normal life. But when you're a member of the Flinch family, normal has never been easy. For hundreds of years, the eldest male Flinch has been servant and guardian to the vampire, Lord Underwood. While the Flinches have changed through the generations, Underwood has remained eternal. David had hoped to be spared the horror of serving his family's lord and master, but when he is summoned to the Flinch home in Spain by his dying older brother, he knows his luck has run out. After fifty years of slumber, Underwood is to be resurrected from the grave in a ritual of human sacrifice, and David, by right of succession, is to be his resurrector. But there is another Flinch, one who craves the role of guardian to the vampire: David's sister, Lydia. It's a job she means to have, even if it means making David's the first blood shed in this new age of Underwood and Flinch.

Book Rejection Proof

Download or read book Rejection Proof written by Jia Jiang and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and inspiring account of conquering the fear of rejection, offering a completely new perspective on how to turn a no into a yes. Jia Jiang came to the United States with the dream of being the next Bill Gates. But despite early success in the corporate world, his first attempt to pursue his entrepreneurial dream ended in rejection. Jia was crushed, and spiraled into a period of deep self doubt. But he realized that his fear of rejection was a bigger obstacle than any single rejection would ever be, and he needed to find a way to cope with being told no without letting it destroy him. Thus was born his "100 days of rejection" experiment, during which he willfully sought rejection on a daily basis--from requesting a lesson in sales from a car salesman (no) to asking a flight attendant if he could make an announcement on the loud speaker (yes) to his famous request to get Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the shape of Olympic rings (yes, with a viral video to prove it). Jia learned that even the most preposterous wish may be granted if you ask in the right way, and shares the secret of successful asking, how to pick targets, and how to tell when an initial no can be converted into something positive. But more important, he learned techniques for steeling himself against rejection and ways to develop his own confidence--a plan that can't be derailed by a single setback. Filled with great stories and valuable insight, Rejection Proof is a fun and thoughtful examination of how to overcome fear and dare to live more boldly.

Book Days of Our Work Lives The Incredible Journey of an Employee and Manager

Download or read book Days of Our Work Lives The Incredible Journey of an Employee and Manager written by Mark Luis Foster and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many employees of companies across the country can relate to the idea that their office sometimes resembles the hot mess of a soap opera. Such a premise generated an interesting question: What happens if an employee and his manager showed up to work one day, only to find themselves inside the chaotic environment of a TV soap opera? The co-authored manuscript, "Days of Our Work Lives: The Incredible Journey of a Manager and Employee" explores that very idea. "Days of Our Work Lives" is a single story written from two different perspectives. Designed as a flip book, it provides the reader with one angle written from the manager's view, while the other angle is written through the eyes of his employee. Our main characters, Jack (employee) and Mark (manager), arrive at work expecting a typical day, only to discover that their office has inexplicably transformed into a set of a typical soap opera. Jack is now the star of the soap, navigating his new world while trying to find his true role. Mark is thrust into the role of the soap's director, delicately balancing the needs of his team with the pressures coming down from the network bosses. Readers of self-help, motivational and business management books will appreciate the unique way each writer navigates through the sudden chaos of a TV soap opera production, complete with humorous and sometimes eerie similarities to the typical work environment at any company. The story showcases the tensions that exist between managers and employees when the heat is on, and how such situations can be resolved. About the authors: Jack is a former actor and current corporate speaker who humorously addresses workplace challenges for audiences nationwide. Mark owns his own marketing advisory firm in Minneapolis and spent several decades as a senior marketing executive who managed people and projects for Fortune 500 companies. As an added bonus, the book features two forewords from industry notables: one from the former longtime producer and director of "Guiding Light" and "Days of Our Lives," Roy Steinberg, and the other from Alice Hirson, actress from "Edge of Night," "Another World" and "One Life to Live," with primetime credits including "Dallas" and "Ellen."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don’t Flinch: The Believers Journey Unveiled is a guide intended to be used as a locator device to help identify the traps the enemy has been employing which has caused many of us to miss our opportunities of blessings. There are countless methods he has chosen but the one’s he uses the most are ”doubt” and “unbelief.” As we journey through life we have been instructed to be wise as serpents, therefore Don’t Flinch has insight on how to avoid the flinch we have been subject to. “Doubt has partnered with our imagination and created billion dollar empire. Yes, billions. Doubt has stolen billions of our opportunities and relationships for us. It has smuggled from each us countless blessings of healing, deliverances and more power than we can measure. Doubt is a thief.” Unbelief’s mask is deception. When we are attacked with unbelief it tends to dress in the image of facts and truth and its form is grounded in history. When we are faced with this type of attack, our ability to discern the truth becomes critical and our walk of faith is tested like never before.

Book The Predictable Heartbreaks of Imogen Finch

Download or read book The Predictable Heartbreaks of Imogen Finch written by Jacqueline Firkins and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2023-10-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacqueline Firkins's The Predictable Heartbreaks of Imogen Finch is a beautiful story of friendship, and second chances at love. Imogen Finch has just been through her seventeenth breakup. She saw it coming, so she's not as crushed as she might be, but with all seventeen of her exes leaving her for other partners, she's come to believe a prediction her well-intentioned and possibly clairvoyant mother made over twenty years ago: that Imogen would never come first at anything or to anyone. Is her love life failing due to a magical curse? Insufficient effort? Poor timing or personality mismatches? Everyone has opinions on the matter. Imogen's ready to give up altogether. But when Eliot Swift, her secret high school crush, returns to their small coastal town after a decade of nomadic travels, Imogen has new motivation to try again. Eliot's full of encouragement. He suggests that her curse is not only imagined, it's easily breakable. All they need is one win--any win--and she can believe in love, and in herself again. From trivia games to swimming races to corn-shucking contests, the pair sets out to snag Imogen her first first. But when victory proves more elusive than Eliot anticipated, and when his deep-seeded wanderlust compels him to depart for far away places, Imogen fears she's destined to remain in second place forever. Fortunately for them both, sometimes magic lingers in the most unexpected places. And love is far from predictable.
