Book Creole Gumbo and All That Jazz

Download or read book Creole Gumbo and All That Jazz written by Howard Mitcham and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 1992-03-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafood, folklore, and New Orleans jazz history combine in “a delightful book with excellent recipes” (Mimi Sheraton, The New York Times). A dazzling array of photos, recipes, and far-out folklore, spiced up with tidbits of jazz history and lyrics, comprises a seafood cookbook that celebrates the world-famous cookery of New Orleans. Howard Mitcham offers more than 300 enticing dishes, from crab gumbo and shrimp-oyster jambalaya to barbecued red snapper and trout amandine. As an appetizer, Mitcham traces the development of the cuisine that made New Orleans famous and the history of the people who brought their native cookery to the melting pot that makes New Orleans a living gumbo. For the main course, he puts together a cornucopia of local delights that are ready to prepare in any kitchen. Mitcham traces the development of sophisticated Creole cooking and its rambunctious country cousin, Cajun cooking, with innumerable anecdotes, pictures, and recipes as well as a list of substitutes for hard-to-find seafoods. “Creole Gumbo is more than a cookbook. It is a history book, a music lesson and a personality profile of great jazzmen.” —Today

Download or read book The Other Great Migration written by Bernadette Pruitt and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twentieth century has seen two great waves of African American migration from rural areas into the city, changing not only the country’s demographics but also black culture. In her thorough study of migration to Houston, Bernadette Pruitt portrays the move from rural to urban homes in Jim Crow Houston as a form of black activism and resistance to racism. Between 1900 and 1950 nearly fifty thousand blacks left their rural communities and small towns in Texas and Louisiana for Houston. Jim Crow proscription, disfranchisement, acts of violence and brutality, and rural poverty pushed them from their homes; the lure of social advancement and prosperity based on urban-industrial development drew them. Houston’s close proximity to basic minerals, innovations in transportation, increased trade, augmented economic revenue, and industrial development prompted white families, commercial businesses, and industries near the Houston Ship Channel to recruit blacks and other immigrants to the city as domestic laborers and wage earners. Using census data, manuscript collections, government records, and oral history interviews, Pruitt details who the migrants were, why they embarked on their journeys to Houston, the migration networks on which they relied, the jobs they held, the neighborhoods into which they settled, the culture and institutions they transplanted into the city, and the communities and people they transformed in Houston.

Book Dissonant Voices

Download or read book Dissonant Voices written by Joseph Pizza and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2023-09-28 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dissonant Voices uncovers the interracial collaboration at the heart of the postwar avant-garde. While previous studies have explored the writings of individual authors and groups, this work is among the first to trace the cross-cultural debate that inspired and energized mid-century literature in America and beyond. By reading a range of poets in the full context of the friendships and romantic relationships that animated their writing, this study offers new perspectives on key textual moments in the foundation and development of postmodern literature in the U.S. Ultimately, these readings aim to integrate our understanding of New American Poetry, the Black Arts Movement, and the various contemporary approaches to poetry and poetics that have been inspired by their examples.

Book The Spyglass Tree

    Book Details:
  • Author : Albert Murray
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 1992-10-27
  • ISBN : 0679730850
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book The Spyglass Tree written by Albert Murray and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1992-10-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By “our premier writer about jazz and the blues . . . and a fictional tale spinner in the grand Southern tradition” (Washington Post Book World), The Spyglass Tree is a deeply affecting novel of elegant, lyrical reminiscence and profound sophistication about a young black man’s advent into the world of academia—an imaginary Alabama college—in the 1930s. Admist the excitement of the world of ideas and adventures with new friends, Scooter sallies into “the territory of the blues,” where recollection becomes legend. Here he learns to deal with the vicissitudes of life—the complexities of family ties and camaraderie, his sexuality, pride of excellence in school, the darker realities of history and human passion—through confrontation and improvisation, and with style and courage. “[The Spyglass Tree] strikes a perfect balance between the black folk tradition and Faulknerian rumination. . . . One reads this very fine novel for the glissando effect of its language, the vibrancy of its characters and the unabashed pleasure Mr. Murray takes in nostalgia for its own sake . . . with level-headed clarity and honesty.”—The New York Times Book Review

Book The Shocking Truths About Heaven Hell and Your Birthright Blessing

Download or read book The Shocking Truths About Heaven Hell and Your Birthright Blessing written by Franklin T. Gibbs and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals what you always wanted to know about the issues of life, death and the afterlife. Supported by Scriptures, it reveals shocking truths about heaven, hell and your birthright blessing. There're four components to Gods birthright (covenant) blessing which are His (1) word blessing, (2) peach blessing, (3) wealth blessing, and (4) eternal life blessing. God set this inheritance aside for you before you were born. There's enough abundance in your birthright blessing to fulfill every need you have. It entitles you to dwell in a land of utopia whereby your peace, health, friendships, quality of life, holiness and well being are absolutely perfect. Speaking of the good life, it doesn't get any better than this. This book shows that (1) you have a personal calling on your life (youre created for a purpose), and (2) your racial group has a calling to fulfill. You need to know your personal and racial callings, for they are eternal. Before you can appreciate what God has in store for you, you need to know who you are (the real you that God created you to be). This book reveals the real you. This book also confirms the reality and location of heaven and the materials saints new bodies will be made of. It shows what saints do in Paradise now and forevermore. You'll be delighted and pleasantly surprised to know your heavenly activities. This book reveals (1) where Hades is located (the temporary abode of sinners called the region of disembodied spirits), (2) where the permanent place of torment is located called the eternal lake of fire, and (3) the cursed materials sinners bodies will consist of. In hell, sinners' bodies will burn to ashes and be recycled to burn all over again. God's Scriptures confirm these truths.

Book The Reader s Holy Bible Volume 4 The New Covenant

Download or read book The Reader s Holy Bible Volume 4 The New Covenant written by Devoted Friends of God and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-07-16 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Read the Holy Bible like a novel, not like a textbook! This version of the Holy Bible capitalizes on a new presentation style that has become more popular over the last few years, and one that is closer to the original version than most current ones. We've dispensed with chapter and verse numbers (they weren't added until the 1200s and 1500s, respectively), and we've put books that were split apart because they wouldn't fit on a single scroll (e.g., Ezra and Nehemiah) back into single books. We've also rearranged some of the books so they follow a more logical timeline and progression. We keep books with the same audience or author, or same theme or timeline, together. This makes it more cohesive for you to read. We've used the World English Bible, a readable translation that allows you to traverse the whole of God's word in thoroughly modern language. We hope you enjoy reading this new version of the Holy Bible, and may Yahweh bless you!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Slide-Rule had been their strategist. She had taken the beaten armies of Falonbeck to victory over the Sullenfeld Hordes and now even the Dragon Prince of Halafalon wouldn't stand in her way. And if she could keep Sir John L'Crue on side, what she wanted she would get. Bus-Pass was one of their best fighters. She was a thief who made an art out of her trade. But her frequent confrontations with the Sheriff of Jasanta had instilled an admiration that went way beyond mere professional competition. Chalk-Dust was their scout. Thoughtful and methodical, she could find anything anywhere. But what she had stolen from the hidden tomb of Edred the Mighty would have to be returned before the Sullenfeld Hordes caught and skinned her to get it back. Blue-Tack was their leader. Strong, intelligent, and a fierce fighter, she had only one true enemy, an enemy who had taken away the only thing she cherished. And she lived only for the day when she would finally get even. Gym-Slip was the thorn in their side. Always full of the joys of life, she was a trickster, a comedienne who found fun in everything they did. And what she told Bus-Pass about the Sheriff was just low-down dirty rotten. Buy-Row was their biographer. Quiet and shy, she was a romantic book worm. She read everything she could find about lost cities and hidden tombs. And what she learned she told Chalk-Dust to find. They had spent a lifetime together on Ellerkan. It had been a lifetime of adventure, robbery, mayhem and sex whenever they could get it. Now, after twenty-eight years came their reunion. The flesh may have been weak, but the spirit was still willing, and what happened was what always happened when the Sixpack were around -all Hell let loose. And into all this came Johnson Fold. He was only interested in a little horse trading. Ellerkan was just the sort of backwards planet where his skills and artistry could be most fruitful. And as he often said to his partner, Sinita Khan, "What could possibly go wrong?"
