Book How Many Light Bulbs Does It Take to Change the World

Download or read book How Many Light Bulbs Does It Take to Change the World written by Matt Ridley and published by London Publishing Partnership. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost every schoolchild learns that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. But did he? And if he hadn’t invented it, would we be still living in the dark? Acclaimed author Matt Ridley (The Rational Optimist, The Evolution of Everything) explains that at least 20 other people can lay claim to this breakthrough moment. Ridley argues that the light bulb emerged from the combined technologies and accumulated knowledge of the day – it was bound to emerge sooner or later. Based on his 2018 Hayek Memorial Lecture, Ridley contends that innovation – from invention through to development and commercialisation – is the most important unsolved problem in all of human society. We rely on it – but we do not fully understand it, we cannot predict it and we cannot direct it. In How Many Light Bulbs Does It Take to Change the World? Ridley examines the nature of innovation – and how people often fear its consequences. He dispels the myth that automation destroys jobs – and demonstrates how innovation leads to economic growth. And he argues that intellectual property rights, originally intended to encourage innovation, are now being used by big business to defend their monopolies. Ridley concludes that innovation is a mysterious and under-appreciated process that we discuss too rarely, hamper too much and value too little.

The book uses a meta-analysis and meta-synthesis to identify nine areas where humor significantly improves various aspects of the learning environment. Book The PD Chronicles

Download or read book The PD Chronicles written by Jack James and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-05-24 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lies, intrigue, illicit affairs, kidnapping, snitches, drug use. Sound like the stuff of a daytime TV soap opera? The soap dishers should be so creative. Those happen to be some of the elements in The PD Chronicles, a behind-the-scenes account of what goes on at a radio station in Anytown, U.S.A., as told by Jack James, a living, breathing, working program director. For obvious reasons, this current major market PD uses a pseudonym, though one would have to think that sooner or later, a savvy boss would realize the characters populating these chronicles were his very own employees. The matter-of-fact, often cynical and mostly hilarious deadpan diary entries give readers a glimpse of what really goes on behind the curtain of an everyday radio station. This PD takes you into the hallways, the general manager’s office, the sales department, the control room and on-air studio, the lobby and the bathroom (how Ally McBeal!) of the radio stations where he’s worked. It’s WKRP, only the real deal. Among other entries, we learn that the promotions director tried conducting a hate campaign against the new morning man, including posting nasty comments to the station’s Web site bulletin board. And talked the night deejay into disparaging his embattled A.M. counterpart. Her cover was cracked, though, and needless to say, she’s out. Then there’s the case of the kidnapped T-shirts. They were lifted by a competitor while one young promotions helper was in the process of giving them away before a stadium concert. Turns out the thief hadn’t realized he was stealing from a beefy former University of Minnesota football player. (A possible clue to the PD’s whereabouts? But we digress). In front of a stadium full of concertgoers, the jock tackles the hapless absconder, giving himself legend status in the process. Also in The PD Chronicles, we get the “I can’t make it for my shift” job excuse du jour. Among them: a late night jock who claimed he knocked out his front teeth in a bathroom fall. Those sibilant sounds just don’t cut it on the air. Excuse accepted. Until we learn he real reason for the dental disturbance was a drug deal gone bad, and that our troubled deejay has had a problem with amphetamine-type substances since his teens. Turned over to the police by his own grandmother, the young addict was headed for a rehab center—and a job somewhere else. (This poor PD seems to have more employee turnover than the Yankees under George Steinbrenner). When this PD is discovered and loses his own job, he’ll have a bright future as a writer. Maybe then his relatives, who keep asking “When are you gonna get a real job?” will be proud of him.

Book excerpt: The aim of this volume originally was to occupy my time during the start of and worst of the Pandemic of 2020. As I started, I realized that I could write. The subject of the volume was to allow others to perhaps learn from my self-induced pain and pain brought by others, Although the sentiments are true to my heart, the examples used and people referred to are not meant to be actual history but lessons and teachings. The aim was not to generate money from my endeavors. It was to give those now and forever life lessons. All net proceeds will be directed to charitable endeavors. Is the cause of the universe itself causeless? Yes, and we will learn why, just be-cause. Did the laws of the universe come from Nothing? Just about, but there is some further ado about near 'nothing'. Does everything amount to a total Nothing except for the quantum fluctuations of uncertainty? Certainly. Will we disprove the Supernatural? Naturally. What does the sum total of the information content of Everything add up to? Nothing. Nil. Null. Not a thing. Do we really learn Everything here, such as what is the origin of the universe and also the explanation of that which produced it. Yes. Really? Yes, for sure; you can count on it. Are any other of your books kind of like this one? Yes, see 'Butterflies At the Edge of Forever'.

It doesn't matter if you've stumbled time and again, or even fallen flat on your face. What matters most in this all-important race of life is how you finish. According to Farrar, the man who hangs in there for the long haul with his wife, his kids, and his Lord is an exception these days. Finishing Strong, now in trade paperback, offers lively use of Scripture, contemporary illustrations, and study questions to equip every reader to be that exception. For the man who wants to climb the character ladder more than the corporate one, this is an essential tool.
