Book DON QUIXOTE de la MANCHA in Contemporary English volume 1

Download or read book DON QUIXOTE de la MANCHA in Contemporary English volume 1 written by Miguel de Cervantes and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature of all time. Millions of people have tried to read and understand it, but very few have succeeded. Actually, Cervantes' Spanish is... weird, and not that Spanish! He uses a lot of pronouns; the syntax is absurd; there are far to many conjunctions (y/and, que/that); the sentences are too long; he keeps repeating the adjectives; he is extraordinarily verbose, which prevents the readers to understand the book. Hence, this have deceived all the translators. Besides, one needs to understand the author's purpose to produce a meaningful translation. Here, the main character is an immature middle-aged man who has decided to live in a twilight zone where his self-respect entices him to ignore reality. Sancho, who resembles Piggy in Lord of the flies, is a kind of impotent reason, an illiterate and penniless man who would like to bring his master to sanity. Unfortunately, society, which is quite immoral and insane, his lack of knowledge and his expectations do not enable him to achieve this goal. Hence, reason ends up raving. I have chosen to explain this novel, not to reproduce its style, which is awful. As for the puns, there are also closely related to the meaning of the original, although they are more idiomatic and sophisticated. Oyez, Oyez, Oyez! For the first time in four centuries, this opus is comprehensible and funny!

Millions of people have tried to read and understand it, but very few have succeeded. Actually, Cervantes' Spanish is a bit Andalusian: the way he uses the pronouns and the tenses, his poor syntax, the countless conjunctions (y/and, que/that), endless sentences and a peculiar patois have deceived all the translators. Besides, one needs to understand the author's purpose to produce a meaningful translation. Here, the main character is an immature middle-aged man who has decided to live in a twilight zone where his self-respect entices him to ignore reality. Book excerpt: "The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. Published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. A founding work of Western literature, it is often labeled ""the first modern novel and is sometimes considered the best literary work ever written. The plot revolves around the adventures of a noble from La Mancha named Alonso Quixano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight errant (caballero andante) to revive chivalry and serve his nation, under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical monologues on knighthood, already considered old-fashioned at the time. Don Quixote, in the first part of the book, does not see the world for what it is and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story."

Book excerpt: James Montgomery's new translation of Don Quixote is the fourth already in the twenty-first century, and it stands with the best of them. It pays particular attention to what may be the hardest aspect of Cervantes's novel to render into English: the humorous passages, particularly those that feature a comic and original use of language. Cervantes would be proud. --Howard Mancing, Professor of Spanish, Purdue University and Vice President, Cervantes Society of America

Their picaresque adventures in the world of seventeenth-century Spain form the basis of one of the great treasures of Western literature. In a new translation that “comes closest, among the modern translations, to the simple, intimate, direct style that characterizes Cervantes’ narrative,”* Don Quixote is a novel that is both immortal satire of an outdated chivalric code and a biting portrayal of an age in which nobility was a form of madness. *John J. Allen, Professor Emeritus of Spanish, University of Kentucky and Past President of the Cervantes Society of America

W. Clark, illustrated by Gustave Dore. Clark in his edition states that, “The English text of ‘Don Quixote’ adopted in this edition is that of Jarvis, with occasional corrections from Motteaux.” See in the introduction below John Ormsby’s critique of both the Jarvis and Motteaux translations. It has been elected in the present Project Gutenberg edition to attach the famous engravings of Gustave Dore to the Ormsby translation instead of the Jarvis/Motteaux. The detail of many of the Dore engravings can be fully appreciated only by utilizing the “Full Size” button to expand them to their original dimensions. Ormsby in his Preface has criticized the fanciful nature of Dore’s illustrations; others feel these woodcuts and steel engravings well match Quixote’s dreams.
