Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This trilingual volume examines the extent to which myths are affected by the crises of the 20th and 21st centuries. It brings together four theoretical studies which analyse both the crisis of structure – implying the distortion or disappearance of myth – and the crisis of concepts and terminology that currently threaten the study of mythology. The largest section of the volume focuses on the crises that have affected ancient, medieval and modern literary myths from a global perspective, taking into account psychology, ethics, politics and contemporary meta-literature. The final section examines the crisis experienced by those myths which permeate the material world, investigating historical and fictitious characters, mythologized places, and languages. The volume is a remarkable collection of 30 texts that were selected from 300 proposals by prestigious researchers from over 30 countries during the 3rd International Conference of Myth Criticism held in Madrid in October 2014.

Book Forms of Modernity

Download or read book Forms of Modernity written by Rachel Schmidt and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-04-09 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's a critical cliché that Cervantes' Don Quixote is the first modern novel, but this distinction raises two fundamental questions. First, how does one define a novel? And second, what is the relationship between this genre and understandings of modernity? In Forms of Modernity, Rachel Schmidt examines how seminal theorists and philosophers have wrestled with the status of Cervantes' masterpiece as an 'exemplary novel', in turn contributing to the emergence of key concepts within genre theory. Schmidt's discussion covers the views of well-known thinkers such as Friedrich Schlegel, José Ortega y Gasset, and Mikhail Bakhtin, but also the pivotal contributions of philosophers such as Hermann Cohen and Miguel de Unamuno. These theorists' examinations of Cervantes's fictional knight errant character point to an ever-shifting boundary between the real and the virtual. Drawing from both intellectual and literary history, Forms of Modernity richly explores the development of the categories and theories that we use today to analyze and understand novels.

Book excerpt: Commemorations that shaped major elements of Spanish identity at the beginning of the 20th century are full of centennials and anniversaries that elaborate and renew the Spanish national mythology. In Centennial Fever Javier Moreno-Luzón, one of the most prominent Spanish historians of his generation, studies the milestones that defined transnational dimensions of celebration at the beginning of the 20th century including the Peninsular War, the first Spanish Constitution, the independence of Latin American States, the “discovery” of the Pacific Ocean and the death of Miguel de Cervantes and the publication of Don Quixote of La Mancha. Through these truly global events, a cultural community is created, called “Hispanoamerica” or “La Raza”, on which Spanish nationalism has become dependent.

Download or read book The Psychology of Don Quixote written by Santiago Ramon y Cajal and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the pen of Spanish Nobel Laureate, Santiago Ramon y Cajal (1852-1934), the visionary of science nicknamed "Don Quixote of the Microscope," comes this essay, based on a 1905 lecture during the celebrations that marked the tricentennial of the "Ingenioso hidalgo de La Mancha." It is a mighty knock and a romantic fustigator against the awkward materialism that has been reigning in modern times. The text bespeaks the Cajalian spirit in the best possible manner, the deep love for science, and a unique vision of Spanish culture. Further, it offers a new outlook on Cervantes and his hero, highly praised later by educators. In Cajal's view, Don Quixote is not a madman, but a gentleman with solid ideas who consciously chose to be madly loyal to his convictions and duties; the hidalgo is an ideal of humanity, magnificence and justice; those values, instead of being signs of illness, must always be involved in any true science."
