Book Don Paito

Download or read book Don Paito written by Manolo Sabino and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After traveling through the restless paths of history, I verified how harmful it has been for humanity, the slogans launched by the Populists. The first that came to my mind was the one launched by the French revolutionaries against the Queen of France: Marie Antoinette. The one that hurt me most was when a member of Versailles told Maria Antonietta: that the people were complaining, because they did not have bread to eat. And Maria Antonietta replied: “If they do not have bread they eat sponge cake.” But, like all the slogans of the populists; it was proved that it was a vile fallacy: Well, while they spread it throughout France, in its Capital, Paris; They cut off his head in the guillotine to the charismatic Queen Marie Antoinette of Vienna. That even at the time of his death, he will show his dignity; that she was the daughter of Maria Teresa of Austria: “When the executioner tried to take the collar off her dress, with his hands, where he would cut it off; while he was taking them off, Marie Antoinette said to him: Take your dirty hands from my neck, you’re going to make me dirty! I will do it!” When I learned of the wild attitude of the French revolutionaries led by the bloodthirsty Maximilian of Robespierre; I understood that Jose Martí was an advance: In the 19th century, our Apostle told us: “Men go in two camps: Those who love and build and those who hate and destroy.” And that, because of his bloodthirsty actions: Robespierre belonged to the side of those who hate and destroy. As well; that in Fidel Castro and his brother Raul: Robespierre had his counterparts.

Book excerpt: This is a story about a 29-year-old law grad who is faced with one more hurdle before he can become an attorney: passing the California State Bar Exam, a three-day, toughest-in-the-nation exam, and while he has a foolproof plan to pass it, he either can't find suitable conditions where he can study or is derailed by his fondness for girls, parties, booze and weed. Eventually, after hocking his personal possessions for beer money, he's broke and is getting pressured at home to get a job or move out when he meets a girl and posing as husband and wife, they get a job managing an apartment building named The Pool and Patio. Believing he would have ample time to study at his new job, he soon learns that the tenants and his counterfeit wife are wild and constantly distract him until a tragedy occurs that compels the law grad to realize how far he has strayed from his goal of passing the bar. Based on actual events that occurred in the early '70's, most of the characters are in their twenties and in the spirit of the times, are engaged in swearing, drinking, rock & roll, pot and sex in this often humorous account of a dude's struggle to become a lawyer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I never realized that when I started writing my first Patio Time that it would be what brings me healing from God. All of us have a past. Not all of us have trust issues, but I did. I always said that if I couldn't trust my own father, how could I trust my Father in heaven. But not all of us grow from our childhood surroundings without some type of damage. I can honestly say that I used my upbringing as a crutch and an excuse for not growing. Everything I thought I was failing at, I blamed on my life as a child in West Virginia. That's how I began most of my Patio Time. Growing up, as a child, in West Virginia, I blamed failed relationships, lack of financial gain, and listening to the wrong people. I also spent years of trying to fix everyone who had alcoholism because my father was an alcoholic and wanting to heal everyone who had cancer because I watched my mother die of that horrible disease. When you're a child, you can't process death or addiction. I realized I was holding myself back because I could never get close to anyone. Whenever I tried, I would always push them away. Maybe because I was thinking everyone leaves. One day, I went on my patio, sat in my rocking chair, and started writing about things that went on in my home and my small community. Patio Time is a collection of my life and circumstances in that little rural area with a lot of dysfunctions. I guess it's true: what goes on behind closed doors stays behind closed doors. But with this writing, I realized that I had all I needed, just by my surroundings and the love of the community. I often found that my solace came from playing in the mountains and creeks. Patio Time is my perception of the lessons that I learned from every situation. I am hoping that this little collection will move the heart of others who need to realize they are exactly where they needed to be at that time. All the situations that happened to me, can clearly, and has, taught me a lesson of life. I never realized it at that time, but as an adult, I see it clearly now. My goal is for someone to read any page of my book and see their own life and be able to look back and see the beauty and how they were molded as an adult. What my readers don't know is that I was an Italian child who was given away to a white couple in West Virginia in the fifties. Skin color was never an issue in my family but so prevalent in that era. My parents showed nothing but love to me. But a lot of burden comes with that scenario. I grew up with molestation, alcoholism, physical and emotional abuse along with bullying. But with all of that exposure, I still could find something to be thankful for in every one of those situations. I lost both of my parents--my mother when I graduated from high school and my father shortly after. Patio Time has been a way to express the memories that I was trying to forget. Now I'm grateful for my writings. I am hoping that my journey is a light for others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's journey through the criminal justice system highlights the traumatic experiences of offenders as they navigate the confusing and frightening world of punishment. Few people have any real concept of what it means to "do time." Harsh treatment is the intended result of get-tough, no-frills penal values. The offensive level of cruelty and human rights abuses in prisons remain largely below the public radar. This country's prison experiment has had ravaging effects—not just on offenders and their families but also on entire groups of people and whole communities. This book explores the criminalization of poverty and mental illness through firsthand accounts of women in various stages of the criminal justice system. Critical social problems such as sexual abuse, substance abuse, mental illness, family fragmentation, economic instability, and social isolation have particularly impacted women. Unfortunately, society seems to pay little attention to the plight of marginalized women until they break the law. Legislators, the public, and justice officials are then shocked when recidivism rates are high, and the women don't seem to have "learned their lessons." This book chronicles the author's emotional and often painful transformation from a once punitive-minded proponent of the system to a prison reform advocate who implores society to demonstrate compassion for offenders and to consider their potential for redemption. Current practices in most states fail to reflect the evidence about what works. Rather, false representations of crime and criminals, fear mongering, and political posturing continue to be hallmarks of punitive practices. If our ultimate goal is a reduction in crime, the author argues that we must assess realistically what is needed for our offenders to succeed—this will translate into reduced crime, reduced victimization, and less human suffering.

Book excerpt: The tinkling of guitars in the moonlight; the softly hummed words of a Spanish love song; the sweet, liquid music of the bells in the mission San Carlos De Carmelo; fleeting pictures of old Father Junipero Serro—these and a hundred other rich memories flood the mind as one unfolds the story of little Suzanna, a peon girl, poor, futureless at a time when the Dons and the grandsons of the conquistadores were supreme in California. You think of Ramona; the dust covered stretches of El Camino Real—the King’s Highway—appear before your eyes; you hear the roaring of quaint, old-fashioned, muzzleloading guns, the clash of cold steel; subconsciously you thrill to the deeds of valor, of sacrifice and danger. You are in step with romance and adventure when it was in its heyday in Old California. Red-lipped, smoky-eyed senoritas smile on you; your nostrils dilate with ungent aromas of hot, golden brown tortillas, or fragrant, steaming tamales; for you the clock has been turned back a hundred years—you walk in a land that is gone, but in which fate played as recklessly with the lives of men and women as it does in our own world today.
