Download or read book Tuscan Spaces written by Silvia M. Ross and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important locus for English-speaking writers, the region of Tuscany is also well represented in the Italian literary canon. In Tuscan Spaces, Silvia Ross focuses on constructions of Tuscany in twentieth-century Italian literature and juxtaposes them with English prose works by such authors as E.M. Forster and Frances Mayes to expose the complexity of literary representation centred on a single milieu. Ross uses the works of writers such as Federigo Tozzi, Aldo Palazzeschi, Vasco Pratolini, and Elena Gianini Belotti, to seek out alternative visions of Tuscan space and emphasizes that each author fashions the region in a manner which reflects their personal poetics, background, and experiences. Theories of cultural geography, space, travel, and narrative contribute to Ross's consideration of the dualisms commonly employed in writings about Tuscany, such as country/city, nature/culture, female/male, and self/other, all of which are in turn affected by her interrogation of the local/foreign opposition that underlies the study as a whole.

Download or read book Friends for Life written by Louis Goldman and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The year is 1943, and the Goldmans - Louis, his brother, and their parents - have crisscrossed Europe, always just barely ahead of Nazi forces in Germany, Poland, and France. Now penniless, exhausted, their only ID stamped with "JUIF," they face a journey over treacherous Italian Alps to their last hope: the safety of the Allied lines." "What emerges from the horrors of flight is irrefutable proof of human decency. The Goldmans, along with hundreds of other Jews, become part of an underground network that has sprung up across Italy to help fugitives. Italian priests, nuns, partisans, peasants, and nobility defy Nazi authority at the risk of their own safety, their only motive to help another human being." "Friends for Life is a tribute to this group of Italians who, for two years, from 1943 to 1945, risked their lives to save Jews from the Nazis. The friendship born in those dark days, especially between priests and those whom they kept safe, has continued and deepened over the years." "Louis Goldman survives the terrors of the Holocaust and emigrates as a young man to Palestine, where he lives until moving to New York City to work as one of the world's foremost feature film still-photographers." "While the pain of Holocaust memories makes us want to forget its evil, Friends for Life offers us something to remember: the innate dignity and goodness of human beings."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Preventing Violent Radicalisation in Europe written by Patrizia Meringolo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-03 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the latest literature and European experiences on preventing youth violent radicalisation and violent actions in intergroup relations. Youth violent radicalisation is a significant problem within the European context, and requires an exploration of how various social actors can play an active role in preventing radicalisation in minors and young adults. This complex issue needs to be explored through a multidisciplinary approach, and effective operational models are needed in order to tackle it. This book describes the theoretical framework for such an approach in all its facets. The book’s originality lies in its psychosocial and participatory approach, aimed at improving results through professional training and community empowerment for building trusting relationships and educational activities. It also proposes “alternative narratives”, which are a way of representing people and groups within a social context, thereby overcoming stereotyped visions and stigma. This book focuses on participation and communication among stakeholders, social inclusion, strengthening democratic values, and pursuing a proactive instead of a reactive approach to preventing radicalisation. Highly topical, the book will appeal to researchers and students of the social and behavioural sciences interested in youth radicalisation, including social work and social policy, as well as practitioners working within the juvenile justice system.

Download or read book The Global Pontificate of Pius XII written by Simon Unger-Alvi and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2020, the Vatican opened its archives for the pontificate of Pius XII (1939-1958), the pope that led the Catholic Church during WWII, the Holocaust, and the beginning of the Cold War. The Global Pontificate of Pius XII brings together historians who were among the first to consult the previously unseen Vatican materials. These long-awaited records allow for an expansion of the current historiography beyond the pope’s biography. Methodologically, the volume works to transcend the rigidity of religious history and engage with new approaches in global, transnational, and postcolonial history to re-introduce questions surrounding religion into modern post-war historiography.
