Book excerpt: A "marvelous" (Economist) account of how the Christian Revolution forged the Western imagination. Crucifixion, the Romans believed, was the worst fate imaginable, a punishment reserved for slaves. How astonishing it was, then, that people should have come to believe that one particular victim of crucifixion-an obscure provincial by the name of Jesus-was to be worshipped as a god. Dominion explores the implications of this shocking conviction as they have reverberated throughout history. Today, the West remains utterly saturated by Christian assumptions. As Tom Holland demonstrates, our morals and ethics are not universal but are instead the fruits of a very distinctive civilization. Concepts such as secularism, liberalism, science, and homosexuality are deeply rooted in a Christian seedbed. From Babylon to the Beatles, Saint Michael to #MeToo, Dominion tells the story of how Christianity transformed the modern world.

Book excerpt: What is God Saying for the Year 2021? If there is anything the year 2020 taught us, it is that "It is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of the Lord that showeth mercy." Many 2020 (new year) resolutions and goals were abandoned. We were forced to create new goals centered only around the most important things of life, which are: life, health, and survival. While I believe in planning and drawing yearly goals, I believe more in surrendering the entire year to God and planning it with Him. This is what this manual is all about. This is not a book of predictions for 2021. It is rather a book of prayers to take charge of the year. It is our usual guide to 21 Days Fasting and Prayers to Command the Year, Receive Direction and Provoke Favor, Restoration, and Breakthrough. With this manual, you will arise and prophesy to the year, surrender your plans to God, hear the voice of God, be empowered to follow God's purpose for your life, and achieve what truly matters. It is our year of dominion! But what is dominion? How do we activate the power to walk in dominion throughout the year? What specific scriptures and prayers can we use to discern God's direction for the year and command His protection, favor, and financial prosperity This book gives you these powerful answers. Over the years, I learned firsthand the power of waiting on the Lord to take instructions to run with, instead of just drawing all kinds of goals for my life. This knowledge changed my entire life and made my life more impactful, more challenging, and more fulfilling. The Bible says: Psalm 37:5 - Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you (NLT) Proverbs 16: 3 - Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans (NIV). David and Solomon made these statements not out of trying to sound religious. But based on their own various experiences. One thing to always remember is that "Man, no matter how intelligent, is incapable of designing a path of peace and fulfillment for himself without God." Don't just draw new year plans, come before God for direction. God wants something better and bigger for you. He does not make our lives boring. He makes it more exciting than we'll ever imagine. In this 21 days fasting and prayer guide, you will discover: => Why it is better to plan your life in God's presence. => Prayers to hear the voice of God and access divine direction. => Prayers for uncommon favor in life => Prayers to deal with negative spiritual strongholds. => Prayers to stop witchcraft activities against your life and destiny. => Prayers for financial breakthroughs and business ideas. => Prayers against delays and stagnation. => Prayers for protection and healing. => Prayers for your marriage and family. => Prayers for the nation and community, and lots more... The prayers in this book cover most aspects of life and will help you encounter God in a unique way. It will help to completely surrender all to the LORD, and be empowered to walk in God's plan for your life.

Book Media and Society After Technological Disruption

Download or read book Media and Society After Technological Disruption written by Kyle Langvardt and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2024-05-31 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internet has reshaped the media landscape and the social institutions built upon it. Competition from online media sources has decimated local journalism and diminished the twentieth century's established journalistic gatekeepers. Social media puts individual users front and center in the creation of the content that they consume. Harmful speech can spread further and faster, and the institutions responsible for policing that speech-Facebook, TikTok, YouTube and the like-lack any clear twentieth-century analog. The law is still working to catch up to the world these changes have wrought. This volume gathers sixteen scholars in law, media, technology, and history to consider these changes. Chapters explore the breakdown of trust in the media, changes in the law of defamation and privacy, challenges of online content moderation, and financial viability for journalistic enterprises in the internet age. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.

Book Dominion from Sea to Sea

Download or read book Dominion from Sea to Sea written by Bruce Cumings and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-17 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America is the first world power to inhabit an immense land mass open at both ends to the world’s two largest oceans—the Atlantic and the Pacific. This gives America a great competitive advantage often overlooked by Atlanticists, whose focus remains overwhelmingly fixed on America’s relationship with Europe. Bruce Cumings challenges the Atlanticist perspective in this innovative new history, arguing that relations with Asia influenced our history greatly. Cumings chronicles how the movement westward, from the Middle West to the Pacific, has shaped America’s industrial, technological, military, and global rise to power. He unites domestic and international history, international relations, and political economy to demonstrate how technological change and sharp economic growth have created a truly bicoastal national economy that has led the world for more than a century. Cumings emphasizes the importance of American encounters with Mexico, the Philippines, and the nations of East Asia. The result is a wonderfully integrative history that advances a strong argument for a dual approach to American history incorporating both Atlanticist and Pacificist perspectives.

Book Difficult Empathy and Rhetorical Encounters

Download or read book Difficult Empathy and Rhetorical Encounters written by Eric Leake and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Difficult Empathy takes up the question of empathy as fundamentally a rhetorical concern, focusing on the ways we encounter and understand one another in what we read and write, hear and say. The book centres around the argument that empathy as a rhetorical event occurs not simply in the minds of individuals but as a product of the rhetorical situations, practices, cultures, and values in which we engage. Rather than identifying empathy as a cure-all, or jettisoning the concept altogether, the author acknowledges empathy’s potential as well as its limitations by focusing on what makes empathy a hard and ultimately worthwhile practice. This nuanced and original study will interest scholars working at the intersection of rhetoric and composition with empathy, as well as those studying empathy in fields such as critical and cultural theory, politics, media analysis, social psychology, and the cognitive humanities.

Download or read book Dominion written by Matthew Scully and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2003-10-08 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." --Genesis 1:24-26 In this crucial passage from the Old Testament, God grants mankind power over animals. But with this privilege comes the grave responsibility to respect life, to treat animals with simple dignity and compassion. Somewhere along the way, something has gone wrong. In Dominion, we witness the annual convention of Safari Club International, an organization whose wealthier members will pay up to $20,000 to hunt an elephant, a lion or another animal, either abroad or in American "safari ranches," where the animals are fenced in pens. We attend the annual International Whaling Commission conference, where the skewed politics of the whaling industry come to light, and the focus is on developing more lethal, but not more merciful, methods of harvesting "living marine resources." And we visit a gargantuan American "factory farm," where animals are treated as mere product and raised in conditions of mass confinement, bred for passivity and bulk, inseminated and fed with machines, kept in tightly confined stalls for the entirety of their lives, and slaughtered in a way that maximizes profits and minimizes decency. Throughout Dominion, Scully counters the hypocritical arguments that attempt to excuse animal abuse: from those who argue that the Bible's message permits mankind to use animals as it pleases, to the hunter's argument that through hunting animal populations are controlled, to the popular and "scientifically proven" notions that animals cannot feel pain, experience no emotions, and are not conscious of their own lives. The result is eye opening, painful and infuriating, insightful and rewarding. Dominion is a plea for human benevolence and mercy, a scathing attack on those who would dismiss animal activists as mere sentimentalists, and a demand for reform from the government down to the individual. Matthew Scully has created a groundbreaking work, a book of lasting power and importance for all of us.
