Book The Dominican Republic and the United States

Download or read book The Dominican Republic and the United States written by G. Pope Atkins and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of the political, economic, and sociocultural relationship between the Dominican Republic and the United States follows its evolution from the middle of the nineteenth century to the mid-1990s. It deals with the interplay of these dimensions from each country's perspective and in both private and public interactions. From the U.S. viewpoint, important issues include interpretation of the rise and fall of the Dominican Republic's strategic importance, the legacy of military intervention and occupation, the problem of Dominican dictatorship and instability, and vacillating U.S. efforts to "democratize" the country. From the Dominican perspective, the essential themes involve foreign policies adopted from a position of relative weakness, ambivalent love-hate views toward the United States, emphasis on economic interests and the movement of Dominicans between the two countries, international political isolation, the adversarial relationship with neighboring Haiti, and the legacy of dictatorship and the uneven evolution of a Dominican-style democratic system. The Dominican Republic and the United States is the eleventh book in The United States and the Americas series, volumes suitable for classroom use.

Download or read book Tigers of a Different Stripe written by Sydney Hutchinson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Tigers of a Different Stripe, ethnomusicologist Sydney Hutchinson examines a variety of music genres in the Dominician Republic, and its diasporic communities, to shed light on how gender is performed through music, especially merengue tipico, a traditional, accordion-based genre that has undergone great change since the 1960s. Hutchinson goes beyond looking at just the music itself, to how dancing and listening, as well as viewing and discussing music, all play a part in gender performance and construction. Dominican gender roles are usually defined by a binary understanding of gender that is at its worst sexist and patriarchal, with macho men and subservient women. Hutchinson shows how wrong this is in musical performance, where musicians like Rita Indiana bend both gender and genre. The discussion naturally expands to movement, migration, race, class, and notions of tradition and modernity. In the end, Tigers shows how music can either reinforce entrenched gender roles or help to open up possibilities by imagining new roles and identities for all."

Download or read book Black in Latin America written by Henry Louis Gates, Jr. and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-08-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 12.5 million Africans were shipped to the New World during the Middle Passage. While just over 11.0 million survived the arduous journey, only about 450,000 of them arrived in the United States. The rest-over ten and a half million-were taken to the Caribbean and Latin America. This astonishing fact changes our entire picture of the history of slavery in the Western hemisphere, and of its lasting cultural impact. These millions of Africans created new and vibrant cultures, magnificently compelling syntheses of various African, English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish influences. Despite their great numbers, the cultural and social worlds that they created remain largely unknown to most Americans, except for certain popular, cross-over musical forms. So Henry Louis Gates, Jr. set out on a quest to discover how Latin Americans of African descent live now, and how the countries of their acknowledge-or deny-their African past; how the fact of race and African ancestry play themselves out in the multicultural worlds of the Caribbean and Latin America. Starting with the slave experience and extending to the present, Gates unveils the history of the African presence in six Latin American countries-Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Mexico, and Peru-through art, music, cuisine, dance, politics, and religion, but also the very palpable presence of anti-black racism that has sometimes sought to keep the black cultural presence from view.

Book The Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers Volume XII

Download or read book The Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers Volume XII written by Marcus Garvey and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume XII of the Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers covers a period of twelve months, from the opening of the UNIA's historic first international convention in New York, in August 1920, to Marcus Garvey's return to the United States in July 1921 after an extended tour of Cuba, Jamaica, Panama, Costa Rica, and Belize. In many ways the 1920 convention marked the high-point of the Garvey movement in the United States, while Garvey's tour of the Caribbean, in the winter and spring of 1921, registered the greatest outpouring of popular support for the UNIA in its history. The period covered in the present volume was the moment of the movement's political apotheosis, as well as the moment when the finances of Garvey's Black Star Line went into free fall. Volume XII highlights the centrality of the Caribbean people not only to the convention, but also to the movement. The reports to the convention discussed the range of social and economic conditions obtaining in the Caribbean, particularly their impact on racial conditions. The quality of the discussions and debates were impressive. Contained in these reports are some of the earliest and most clearly enunciated statements in defense of social and political freedom in the Caribbean. These documents form an underappreciated and still underutilized record of the political awakening of Caribbean people of African descent.

Book What about Your Saucepans

Download or read book What about Your Saucepans written by Lindsay De Feliz and published by . This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lindsay de Feliz walked away from an enviable lifestyle - marriage, successful career, expensive holidays, designer clothes, fast cars - to pursue her dream of being a SCUBA diving instructor. She could not have predicted the journey ahead when she arrived in the heat, sunshine and vibrant culture of the Dominican Republic. She found love, a ready-made family and - despite being shot in a bungled robbery - a desire to help the Dominican people, many living in abject poverty. She supported her husband as he ran for political office and with Lindsay by his side they were a formidable team. As the campaign gathered momentum, they learnt the hard way what happens when you oppose those in power. Fighting corruption, double-dealing and with their lives at risk, they were forced into hiding. Their incredible story is stranger than fiction and twice as menacing. The dark underbelly of the Dominican Republic is exposed, from the tourist beaches to the soaring mountains of the interior. Lindsay tells it how it is, but in the telling her deep love for the Dominican Republic, its culture and its people shines through. "What About Your Saucepans? is not only essential reading for anyone moving to the Dominican Republic, it's also a damn good read. Lindsay de Feliz's fight against political corruption, being shot and almost losing everything is one of the most inspiring expat stories I have ever read." Jamie Morris, Founder, ExpatFocus.com "Despite the incredible setbacks she has faced, Lindsay's love and loyalty for her adopted country radiate through this entertaining chronicle of her eventful life in the DR." Ilana Benady, co-author, Expat FAQs: Moving to and Living in the Dominican Republic (Summertime Publishing 2011) "Lindsay's adventures in the DR will shock and amuse in equal measure, and her vast knowledge of the country makes this a hugely entertaining memoir."
