Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Treatise on the Diseases of Horses and Dogs: So Conducted as to Enable Persons to Practise With Ease and Success on Their Own Animals, Without the Assistance of a Farrier; Including Likewise the Natural Management, as Stabling, Feeding, Exercise, &C.; Together With the Outlines of a Plan for the Est Mr. Blaine's long acquaintance with Horses, and the natural attachment he has to them, have led him into an intimate acquaintance with their qualities and defects, which enables him to afford very important assistance to persons wanting to purchase. His engagements of this kind are so numerous, that he is acquainted with every source from whence they can be procured, and he engages to find any description of Horse that may be wanted. The advantages he is enabled to hold to purchasers are very numerous; the most important is, that his professional knowledge ensures to his employers sound, safe, and useful animals, instead of the danger, vexation, and trouble, arising from the tricks usually practised. His acquaintance with the value will also prevent imposition. In most instances this will make a saving of 10, 15, or 20 per cent, to gentlemen employing him. His extensive connection and acquaintance with every market where Horses are to be procured, entirely frees gentlemen from all trouble in looking out for them. Any gentleman, therefore, wanting Horses, by favouring Mr. Blaine with a description of the kind that is required, he will engage to procure them for their inspection and approval: and he presumes that his known integrity will be a sufficient guarantee that he will faithfully discharge the trust reposed in him. Download or read book The Domestic Dog written by Brian Vesey-FitzGerald and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-10-09 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1957, The Domestic Dog is the introduction to the history of man’s best friend, with special reference to Great Britain. After discussing the natural history of the Canidae and the possible sources of domestication, Mr. Vesey-FitzGerald surveys the career of the domestic dog from its beginnings in pre-historic times through to its present position as household companion and pet. He pays particular attention to the early literature of the dog and, even more particularly, to representations of the dog by the great artists of the world, since he believes that much of the history of the individual breeds can be traced in this way. He discusses the part played by the dog in war, in sport, and in the day-to-day occupations of man. He traces the development of breeding for Show and the growth of the Dog Show from the local rivalry of a few enthusiasts to a vast and complicated business, and considers the effect of breeding for Show on the dog as an animal. Finally, he discusses the most controversial subject, the classification of the domestic dog, and gives brief histories and descriptions of the various breeds. This book will be of interest to students of history, veterinary science as well as to anyone with a love for dogs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We know that there were dogs in Victorian Britain, but who were the ‘Doggy People’ who kept them, bred them, showed them, worked with them and cared for them? Chapter by chapter, this book reveals the varied and often eccentric lives of the Victorians who helped define dogs as we know them today. The cast runs from the very pinnacle of society, Queen Victoria, to near the bottom with Jemmy Shaw, a publican, boxer, promoter of dog-fights and rat-killing. The others include an artist, aristocrats, authors, a clergyman, doctors, a dog-dealer, a feminist, journalists, landowners, millionaires, philanthropists, politicians, scientists, a stockbroker, veterinarians, and a showman – none other their Charles Cruft. Looking at the invention and meaning of new breeds such as poodles, collies, Jack Russells, and borzois amongst others, we see how the Victorians thought about pets, sports, dog shows and animal rights.
