Book Fiction and Faction in the Malay World

Download or read book Fiction and Faction in the Malay World written by Mohamad Rashidi Pakri and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a variety of essays and perspectives on some of the foreigners and traders who came to the Malay World and wrote fiction and “faction” (writing that portrays real people or events in a dramatised manner) during their sojourn – regardless of whether they continued to stay in the region, returned to their home country, or migrated to another country. The essays tend to cross generic and disciplinary boundaries as the contributors of this book are drawn from various fields within the arts and humanities, including history, geography, language and literature and translation. All of them, however, deal with colonial texts, the Malay World, or primarily cover the period from the 18th to the 20th century. Including readings of fiction, diaries, vignettes, letters written by traders or colonial officers, the uniqueness of this book lies in the personal, private and/or informal nature of the various documents studied. The encounters of these ‘outsiders’ with the ‘natives’ not only offer fascinating historical insights into the Malay World, but, to a significant degree, vividly express the views and personalities of the writers themselves, as mediated through their assigned commercial and colonial roles.

Book excerpt: A piercing tale of a Malaysian woman’s quest for independence that combines “the nuance of a poet with the ear of a born storyteller” (Julia Watson, coeditor of Women, Autobiography, Theory: A Reader). Li An, a young Malaysian woman of Chinese descent, seeks to understand herself as the country around her struggles to determine its own identity. And much like the politically charged atmosphere of 1969 Kuala Lumpur, Li An must confront the contradictions within. While she supports her nation’s fight to break free from the influence of British colonial rule, she cannot deny her love for the English poetry that she teaches. While she aspires to be an independent woman, she still finds herself married to the dependable Henry—until she meets an American Peace Corps volunteer named Chester Brookfield. Their encounter propels Li An on a quest of self-discovery, one that spans the divide between East and West, women and men, freedom and responsibility. Told with insight and wit, Lim’s sweeping debut novel demonstrates that while the journey is never easy, all roads lead, ultimately, to our true selves. “This elegantly crafted tale places Lim among the most imaginative and dexterous storytellers writing in the English language today.” —Rey Chow, author of Primitive Passions “A gripping novel centered around a strong, language-struck, culture-crossing Asian woman’s quest for independence.” —Rob Wilson, author of Reimagining the American Pacific “This felicitous novel is several books in one—Madame Butterfly transplanted to Malaysia, a feminist manifesto, and a commentary on the new Southeast Asia that has been emerging in recent years. Lim has woven these strands together in a colorful batik that is dazzling.” —Hisaye Yamamoto, author of Seventeen Syllables and Other Stories

Book excerpt: The Malay Peninsula and the island of Singapore were brought under British hegemony or control between the 18th and the 20th centuries. .Malaya, the world's largest producer of tin and rubber, was redefined by British colonisation. In the 1990's, the country was a scrappy multi-ethnic society created largely through forced immigration from India and China. (To ensure dominance, the British had enforced the immigration of groups with different languages and religions).Of those, about 40 % were Chinese, who largely controlled the economy. And about 11% were South Indians, most of whom were Tamils, living in rubber estates. 49% were ethnic Malays, who were also Muslims by law. After gaining independence in 1957, the country was wealthy but struggled to find its identity. With no central language or continuous historical identity, racialised behaviour--emphasised as a tool of control by the colonisers-- dominated daily life. The novel follows a young woman, whose father migrated from India to the then Malaya. How she confronts the harsh realities of this socio-political climate is reflected in her microcosmic world of teaching during the late last century. Her professional life was turbulent. The protagonist discovers the rampant racism and sexism that teachers and administration rely on, to maintain their egos. This is the story of her war. This novel is semi-autobiographical.
