Download or read book The Baby Dolls written by Kim Marie Vaz and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2013-01-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the first women's organizations to mask and perform during Mardi Gras, the Million Dollar Baby Dolls redefined the New Orleans carnival tradition. Tracing their origins from Storyville-era brothels and dance halls to their re-emergence in post-Katrina New Orleans, author Kim Marie Vaz uncovers the fascinating history of the "raddy-walking, shake-dancing, cigar-smoking, money-flinging" ladies who strutted their way into a predominantly male establishment. The Baby Dolls formed around 1912 as an organization of African American women who used their profits from working in New Orleans's red-light district to compete with other Black prostitutes on Mardi Gras. Part of this event involved the tradition of masking, in which carnival groups create a collective identity through costuming. Their baby doll costumes -- short satin dresses, stockings with garters, and bonnets -- set against a bold and provocative public behavior not only exploited stereotypes but also empowered and made visible an otherwise marginalized female demographic. Over time, different neighborhoods adopted the Baby Doll tradition, stirring the creative imagination of Black women and men across New Orleans, from the downtown Trem area to the uptown community of Mahalia Jackson. Vaz follows the Baby Doll phenomenon through one hundred years with photos, articles, and interviews and concludes with the birth of contemporary groups, emphasizing these organizations' crucial contribution to Louisiana's cultural history.

Download or read book A Teacher s Guide to Reading Piaget written by M. Brearley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Piaget helps us to see the developmental significance of a child's failures and successes in thought and action during everyday experience by breaking down each activity into its separate mental elements. We have to tried to draw the educational implications from the developmental facts thus revealed. In recent years teachers have had to learn a great deal about mental measurement as this has become an important feature in our educational structure. This has led to much emphasis on the quantitative assessment of intellectual ability, since in most intelligence tests the main concern is with the number of right responses. In his 'open-ended tests' Piaget seeks to find in a large number of situations what it is that we take for granted which the children have not grasped. To do this he examines the processes of thought and the degree of success and failure, which should be of much greater diagnostic value to the practising teacher. It also gives further support to those who believe in the need for an individual approach to each child's learning. For many years, people who have worked in child centred education have had philosophical theory and intuitive judgment to guide them, but have lacked scientific justification for what they were doing. Piaget's work is now providing scientific evidence from experiments, with concrete examples and demonstration from children's behaviour for what was previously a matter of opinion. We have chosen the examples to cover a wide age range partly to emphasise the genetic approach and partly to appeal to as wide an audience of teachers as possible. In addition we tried to choose pieces that held special promise of applicability in schools.

Download or read book A Bad and Stupid Girl written by Jean McGarry and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-08-03 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siri is a legacy admission, rich and spoiled and destined to flunk out of her freshman year at college. Esther, her roommate, is a scholarship student from humble means, brilliant and driven to succeed. Brought together by chance, the girls soon become partners in a struggle to find their way in a world where neither Esther’s brains nor Siri’s beauty is enough. Never having been forced to work hard at anything, Siri must rely on Esther to teach her to learn and attend class. But as Siri wakes from her dream world to discover the life of the mind, Esther begins shedding her rational bonds to explore the mysteries of the soul. For both, some of the most devastating lessons in the attainment of worldly knowledge come from love. Deadpan funny and bittersweet, A Bad and Stupid Girl is above all else a moving portrait of two friends helping each other to uncover the potential splendor of their lives. Jean McGarry is the author of six previous books of fiction: Airs of Providence, The Very Rich Hours, The Courage of Girls, Home at Last, Gallagher's Travels, and Dream Date. She is a professor of fiction at The Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University. A Bad and Stupid Girl is her third novel. “Jean McGarry's novel is a lovely locket of a book, with the picture inside not at all faded. Focused in close-up, succinct and convincing, it's a story about friendship and maturation, and about how our studies, alone, do not define us.” —Ann Beattie “Jean McGarry’s A Bad and Stupid Girl is an uncommonly Good and Bright-Indeed Novel, sharply written from start to finish and entertaining as Hell.” —John Barth “Everything in life is arbitrary yet must be over-determined in literature. Jean McGarry knows how to tell a persuasive tale illuminating these truths.” —Harold Bloom

Download or read book My Crochet Doll written by Isabelle Kessedjian and published by David and Charles. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make adorable crochet dolls with over fifty unique patterns for clothes and accessories. With a range of clothing and accessory patterns, dress up your doll for home and abroad, from basic underwear and shoes to dresses, dungarees, sweaters, coats, and hats. As well as wardrobe essentials, you can create accessories to match each outfit, including a teddy for bedtime, a bucket for the beach, cakes for the kitchen, and even a penguin for the North Pole! There’s a range of dressing-up costumes, with an adorable bear suit and a fun superhero mask and cape. The cute mini suitcase pattern is the perfect for storing all of your dolls belongings and it doubles up as a bed too! Be aware that crochet terms in the United States are different from those in the U.K. This can be confusing as the same terms are used to refer to different stitches under each system. All crochet patterns in this book are written in U.K. and European terms. U.S. crocheters must take care that they work the correct stitches. One way to tell which system is being used in other patterns is that the American system starts with a single crochet, which the U.K. system doesn't have; so patterns with “sc” in them can be identified as American patterns.
