Book excerpt: "A terrific book that deals with present day concerns."--Thomas King, Governor General's Award-wining author of The Back of the Turtle and The Inconvenient Indian "To understand this story, it is important to know the People and where they came from and what they went through." So begins a haunting story that explores with frank and honest words the dark legacy of the residential school system and its impact on individuals, families and communities. James Nathan and Jake Noland have been best friends for life. After finishing mission school they return to their Gwich'in community in the Northwest Territories. Their lives revolve around bootleggers, the bar, drug abuse and meaningless sex. James and Jake try to dull their painful memories of the school. Each hides a dark secret that fuels his nightmares. Enough alcohol silences the demons for a night; a gun and a single bullet silences demons forever. When a friend commits suicide and a former priest appears on television, the community is shattered. James and Jake confront their childhood abuse and break the silence to begin a journey of healing and rediscovery.

Book Depicting Canada s Children

Download or read book Depicting Canada s Children written by Loren Lerner and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2009-05-20 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depicting Canada’s Children is a critical analysis of the visual representation of Canadian children from the seventeenth century to the present. Recognizing the importance of methodological diversity, these essays discuss understandings of children and childhood derived from depictions across a wide range of media and contexts. But rather than simply examine images in formal settings, the authors take into account the components of the images and the role of image-making in everyday life. The contributors provide a close study of the evolution of the figure of the child and shed light on the defining role children have played in the history of Canada and our assumptions about them. Rather than offer comprehensive historical coverage, this collection is a catalyst for further study through case studies that endorse innovative scholarship. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, Canadian history, visual culture, Canadian studies, and the history of children.

Book Playing Dolls Canadian Experience Required

Download or read book Playing Dolls Canadian Experience Required written by Najat Sinclair-Benrbia and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playing Dolls, Canadian Experience Required is a real life story that depicts the events of my journey coming to this majestic country, Canada. It is also a story of all the other immigrants who have come searching for new beginnings. Like many before me, I came with hopes and dreams in order to change a corner of my world, but I was faced with discrimination, many hurdles to jump and tough decisions to make in the name of that Canadian Experience. But despite the rigidity and the layering of the bureaucratic chaos in a system that does not seem to work with anything foreign, I came to understand that I had to continue, whether I walked on thorns or not. Persevering and changing my destiny was key to see beyond the layering in order to emerge better, stronger and wiser. Changing my destiny, relying on my experience, savoir-faire and education were the right tangible push towards the better, successful person I am today. My journey has not only permitted me to change my thinking, but has helped to change the core of my being by accepting the new person I have become; the better companion, the wonderful wife, the understanding mother and the valuable educator. Playing Dolls, Canadian Experience Required is the play key to new and better highs.

Book Kachina Dolls

    Book Details:
  • Author : Helga Teiwes
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2022-09-27
  • ISBN : 0816549486
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Kachina Dolls written by Helga Teiwes and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2022-09-27 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much has been written about the popular kachina dolls carved by the Hopi Indians of northern Arizona, but little has been revealed about the artistry behind them. Now Helga Teiwes describes the development of this art form from early traditional styles to the action-style kachina dolls made popular in galleries throughout the world, and on to the kachina sculptures that have evolved in the last half of the 1980s. Teiwes explains the role of the Katsina spirit in Hopi religion and that of the kachina doll—the carved representation of a Katsina—in the ritual and economic life of the Hopis. In tracing the history of the kachina doll in Hopi culture, she shows how these wooden figures have changed since carvers came to be influenced by their marketability among Anglos and how their carving has been characterized by increasingly refined techniques. Unique to this book are Teiwes's description of the most recent trends in kachina doll carving and her profiles of twenty-seven modern carvers, including such nationally known artists as Alvin James Makya and Cecil Calnimptewa. Enhancing the text are more than one hundred photographs, including twenty-five breathtaking color plates that bring to life the latest examples of this popular art form.
