Download or read book Hang Ups written by Benjamin Linley Wild and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Covid-19 pandemic heightened people's awareness of long-standing inequalities within the fashion industry. Amid calls for greater accountability and ethical awareness, efforts are being made within and beyond the industry, chiefly in the cultural and education sectors, to decentralize fashion: to make the conception, creation and consumption of fashionable dress and appearance less 'western'-centric. Supporting this premise, Hang-Ups argues that purposeful and permanent change within the fashion industry and fashion education is more likely if it is understood how the contemporary industry became 'western'-centric. To institute effective change, it is necessary to revert to first principles and understand how the fashion industry developed into what it is today. During a period when the concepts of fashion, history and culture are being intensely scrutinized, and with suggestions they are reaching their nadir, the imperative to understand the extent to which they relate, and facilitate the presentation of people's fashionable bodies, is urgent. Hang-Ups explores the origins and consequences of the fashion industry's 'western'-centrism by focusing on nine binaries, defined in the crucible of empire, that continue to be sites of negotiation as the 'west's' traditions and ideals are contested by different cultural perspectives and changing global realities.

Photos from behind the scenes, details of the clothes themselves and shots of the cat-walk: an anthology of the style that has transformed this brand into an icon of fashion Made in Italy. Dolce and Gabbana have played on their Sicilian origins and inherent sensuality that have become their trademark to imagine a range of men: from the traditional Sicilian in his beret and vest, with his gold crucifix hanging from a chain around his neck, to the macho with rippling abs under his shirt and double-breasted jacket, and their more glamorous, chic playboy of latter years embodied by the statuesque David Gandy."

This conceptual and stylistic variety is reflected in the spaces they occupy, whether they are staged in an industrial warehouse, on a city street, or out in the open landscape. Staging Fashion is the first collection of essays about the presentation and staging of fashion in runway shows in the period from the 1960s to the 2010s. It offers a fresh perspective on the many collaborations between artists, architects and interior designers to reinforce their interdisciplinary links. Fashion, architecture and interiors share many elements, including design, history, material culture, aesthetics and trends. The research and ideas underpinning Staging Fashion address how fashion and the spatial fields have collaborated in the creation of the space of the fashion show. The 15 essays are written by fashion, interior, architecture and design scholars focusing on the presentation of fashion within the runway space, from avant-garde practices and collaboration with artists, to the most spectacular and commercial shows of recent years, from Prada to Chanel.

Download or read book Fashion Installation written by Adam Geczy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gone are the days when fashion relied on a runway launch with coinciding press promotions to show a couturier's new range. Today, design houses are thinking beyond traditional methods of display to stimulate interest in their collections, such as to the internet, fashion film and, more recently, fashion installations. This book offers a critical evaluation of the changing ways in which fashion has been exhibited, focusing specifically on the recent turn toward installation, whether in the form of static presentations, interactive performances or the more conventional curated designer exhibition. Connecting viewers – and consumers – on an immersive level, the fashion world has begun to appropriate installation methods traditionally associated with displays of experimental art, transcending the runway system and its constraints. This book turns to the designers who have pioneered fashion installations, such as Aitor Throup, Muccia Prada, Walter Van Beirendonck and Hussein Chalayan among others, and also looks back to the early influential fashion displays by designers such as Worth and Poiret to provide historical context. Divided into three parts, and covering a variety of installations from Vivienne Westwood's fashioned 'concept' stores to Gareth Pugh's immersive films, this ground-breaking book positions the designer as the curator and exhibition-maker and offers the first focused study of the pertinent concept of fashion installation.
