Rock hatte eine vielseitige Karriere: Vom Autodidakten entwickelte er sich zur Autorit�t fuer die Botanik Hawaiis; Forschungsreisen in Suedchina brachten reiche Ausbeute an Specimina botanischer (ca. 80000) und ornithologischer Art (ueber 1000) sowie illustrierte Artikel im National Geographic Magazine. In der Folge wurde Rock zum Experten fuer das kleine Volk der Nakhi, deren piktographische Manuskripte (ca. 5000) er sammelte und deren Rituale, Sprache und Geschichte er in umfangreichen Beitr�gen behandelte. Der vorliegende Band gibt ein Schriftenverzeichnis, T�tigkeitsberichte aus Hawaii, Zeitungsberichte ueber Rocks Forschungen, Briefwechsel mit Botanikern und Institutionen (so dem Gray Herbarium) und die umfangreiche Korrespondenz mit dem Harvard-Yenching-Institut, dessen Forschungsmitarbeiter Rock zeitweise war. Die Briefe und Dokumente geben einen lebendigen Eindruck von Rocks vielseitiger wissenschaftlicher T�tigkeit und seiner unternehmenden, eigenwilligen Pers�nlichkeit. Book excerpt: Schutz und Andacht im Islam befasst sich mit handschriftlichen Dokumenten in Rollenform, die zwischen dem 14. und 19. Jh. entstanden sind. Die vorgestellten Belegstücke stammen aus unterschiedlichen geographischen Kontexten: a. Städtedreieck Tabriz-Konya-Bagdad; b. persischer Kulturraum; c. Osmanisches Reich. Diese Rollen waren bei Angehörigen von Männerbünden (Sufi-Orden, Futuwwa- und Aḫī-Gruppierungen, Gilden) beliebt. Die Studie untersucht das auf diesen Dokumenten verwendete textliche und ge¬stalterische Vokabular. Neben Passagen aus dem Koran (auch vollständige Abschriften) lassen sich oft Gebete und weitere Texte frommen Inhalts feststellen. Gelegentlich finden sich Hinweise, dass die Dokumente aus heterodoxen Umfeldern stammen. Die Studie unterstreicht ausserdem den hohen kunsthistorischen Wert der vorgestellten Belegstücke, die oft für Angehörige von gesellschaftlichen Eliten angefertigt worden sind. Devotion and Protection in Islam deals with hand-written documents in the scroll format dating from the 14th–19th centuries. These documents can be attributed to various geographic contexts: a. the triangle between the cities of Tabriz, Konya and Baghdad; b. the Persianate world; c. the Ottoman Empire. These scrolls were appreciated by members of different associations (Männerbünde; e.g. Sufi orders, Futuwwa and Aḫī groups). This study analyses the textual and ornamental vocabulary applied on the scrolls. The copied texts mostly comprise passages from the Quran and prayers. Certain features suggest that such scrolls were often produced in heterodox environments. Additionally, this study underscores the high art-historical value of these documents, particularly appreciated by members of the ruling elite.

Book excerpt: Ellen Ndeshi Namhila is intrigued by the question: Why can the National Archives of Namibia respond to genealogical enquiries of Whites in a matter of minutes with finding estate records of deceased persons, while similar requests from Blacks cannot be served? Not satisfied with the sweeping statement that this is the result of colonialism and apartheid, she follows the track of so-called Native estates through legislation, record creation and disposal, records management and administrative neglect, authorised and unauthorised destruction, transfer and appraisal, selective processing, and (almost) final amnesia. Eventually she discovers over 11,000 forgotten surviving African estate records but also evidence for the destruction of many others. And she demonstrates the potential of these records to interpret the lives of those who otherwise appear in history only as statistics records which were condemned to destruction by colonial archivists stating they had little research value and no functional value. This study of memory against forgetting is a call to post-colonial archives to re-visit their holdings and the systemic colonial bias that continues to haunt them. This is the revised version of Ellen Namhilas 2015 doctoral thesis published at the University of Tampere, Finland.
