How can churches and Christians develop a healthy, successful path to disciple-making? In this second edition of Gospel-Centered Discipleship, Jonathan Dodson presents an effective, Spirit-led model for sanctification. Reminding readers that real discipleship is imperfect yet transformational, Dodson encourages Christians to engage more authentically with others as they grow in faith. What keeps us going when times get tough? How have the leaders and unsung heroes of world-changing political movements persevered in the face of cynicism, fear, and seemingly overwhelming odds? Book Fear Not Tomorrow God Is Already There Devotional

Download or read book Fear Not Tomorrow God Is Already There Devotional written by Ruth Graham and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ruth Graham, daughter of Billy and Ruth Bell Graham, tackles the fear and uncertainty readers confront when facing daunting challenges and times of uncertainty. Graham empathizes with readers who feel inadequate, outnumbered, overpowered, ill-equipped, or even beyond hope. She then leads a discovery of the all-sufficiency of God and his power, demonstrating how to replace fears with hope and anticipation. Graham writes, “If you are hoping to find within these pages ten steps to greater confidence or positive self-talk for conquering anxiety or how to rise above your challenges to reach your destiny, you won’t find what you are looking for here at all. This book is not about overcoming your shortcomings to build a better you. Growing an unshakable trust in God as you face your tomorrows is not about self-improvement or mastering your circumstances, but about God—who he is, what he does, and why we can trust him.” Graham writes not from an ivory tower of theological discourse, but from the battlefields of brokenness and recovery. From that vantage point she offers evidence that, whether readers’ frightening tomorrows are self-inflicted, other-inflicted, or simply life-inflicted, they may hold fast to the simple yet powerful truth, Fear not tomorrow, God is already there. Each chapter explores a distinct attribute of God and an illustration from God’s Word demonstrating each attribute at work in the face of daunting challenges. Then Graham unpacks enlightening encounters of God’s presence and power, impacting the lives of everyday people today. Graham weaves a tapestry of the all-sufficiency of God and his power to enfold our todays and tomorrows in his mighty grip. Readers will catch sight of his power, learn to rest in his peace, and be filled with anticipation for the future. Fear not tomorrow, God is already there!

In this practical book, author and pastor Ronald Higdon suggests we find the really stable things and learn to handle and grow from the things that must change. He brings to this process a lifetime of experience and deep theological reflection. The result is a practical survival guide to living a faithful life in a changing world. Some of the topics he addresses include continuing to learn throughout our lives, relationships, the manipulation of our lives by anger and fear, the reality of evil, and yes, the fact that change is inevitable no matter how hard we fight it. Each chapter includes questions for further study and thought, making the book suitable for use in group study as well as for individual reading. Finding Stability in Uncertain Times will be useful to all those who are struggling in their Christian walk. Who can say that they are living without any struggle?

Book Uncertain Times

Download or read book Uncertain Times written by Peter J. Hammer and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-08 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume revisits the Nobel Prize-winning economist Kenneth Arrow’s classic 1963 essay “Uncertainty and the Welfare Economics of Medical Care” in light of the many changes in American health care since its publication. Arrow’s groundbreaking piece, reprinted in full here, argued that while medicine was subject to the same models of competition and profit maximization as other industries, concepts of trust and morals also played key roles in understanding medicine as an economic institution and in balancing the asymmetrical relationship between medical providers and their patients. His conclusions about the medical profession’s failures to “insure against uncertainties” helped initiate the reevaluation of insurance as a public and private good. Coming from diverse backgrounds—economics, law, political science, and the health care industry itself—the contributors use Arrow’s article to address a range of present-day health-policy questions. They examine everything from health insurance and technological innovation to the roles of charity, nonprofit institutions, and self-regulation in addressing medical needs. The collection concludes with a new essay by Arrow, in which he reflects on the health care markets of the new millennium. At a time when medical costs continue to rise, the ranks of the uninsured grow, and uncertainty reigns even among those with health insurance, this volume looks back at a seminal work of scholarship to provide critical guidance for the years ahead. Book An Epidemic of Uncertainty

Download or read book An Epidemic of Uncertainty written by Jenny Trinitapoli and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In An Epidemic of Uncertainty, Jenny Trinitapoli advances a new model for studying social life by emphasizing something that social scientists routinely omit from their theories, models, and measures--what people know they don't know. The book takes Malawi's ongoing AIDS epidemic as its entry point for understanding the stakes of uncertainty. After a four-decades-long battle, new infections are down and AIDS-related mortality has declined. But in the wake of pandemic AIDS, an epidemic of uncertainty persists; at any given point in time, half the population doesn't know their HIV status. The author argues that AIDS-related uncertainty is measurable, pervasive, and impervious to biomedical solutions. The consequences of uncertainty are pertinent to multiple domains of life including relationship stability, fertility, health, and well-being. Even as HIV is transformed from a progressive, fatal infection to a chronic and manageable condition, the accompanying epidemic of uncertainty remains central to understanding social life in this part of the world. This book is based on a ground-breaking longitudinal study that documents how the lives of young adults in Balaka, Malawi, unfold over a ten-year period. Trinitapoli also makes three general contributions: first, a demography of uncertainty and a set of theoretical and empirical tools for integrating what people know they don't know into social-scientific models of human behavior; second, a decade-long longitudinal study articulating what demographic approaches have to offer the social sciences; and third, an expansive attitude toward the empirical, which brings longitudinal survey data to life by incorporating accounts of uncertainty and its resolution through ethnography designed to capture population chatter and gossip in Balaka"--

Book Inside the Critics Circle

Download or read book Inside the Critics Circle written by Phillipa K. Chong and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inside look at the politics of book reviewing, from the assignment and writing of reviews to why critics think we should listen to what they have to say Taking readers behind the scenes in the world of fiction reviewing, Inside the Critics’ Circle explores the ways critics evaluate books despite the inherent subjectivity involved and the uncertainties of reviewing when seemingly anyone can be a reviewer. Drawing on interviews with critics from such venues as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Washington Post, Phillipa Chong delves into the complexities of the review-writing process, including the considerations, values, and cultural and personal anxieties that shape what critics do. Chong explores how critics are paired with review assignments, why they accept these time-consuming projects, how they view their own qualifications for reviewing certain books, and the criteria they employ when making literary judgments. She discovers that while their readers are of concern to reviewers, they are especially worried about authors on the receiving end of reviews. As these are most likely peers who will be returning similar favors in the future, critics’ fears and frustrations factor into their willingness or reluctance to write negative reviews. At a time when traditional review opportunities are dwindling while other forms of reviewing thrive, book reviewing as a professional practice is being brought into question. Inside the Critics’ Circle offers readers a revealing look into critics’ responses to these massive transitions and how, through their efforts, literary values get made.
