Book Turkish Business Culture

Download or read book Turkish Business Culture written by Zafer Parlar and published by Optimist Yayın Grubu. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is human nature to judge people by their looks and behavior without considering their backgrounds. However, each of us goes through several different experiences that form our personal history. These experiences shape the way we think and behave throughout the years. When we are young, we like to try new things. Our behavior often lacks consistency. We try to find our way with a bit of a rebellious attitude. Then we start to mature, develop our own principles and ways of doing things while harmonizing with the people we interact with. Countries follow the same pattern with their economies and cultures. However, the general rules of doing business are more or less the same, as are the cultural behavior of countries. Foreign businesspeople from established countries—like adults looking at youngsters—often tend to ignore the age and the cultural background of Turkey when they make harsh judgments about the different ways of doing business in this country. The Turkish economy was semi-liberalized in 1984 and has been liberalizing since then. One should therefore always keep in mind that one is dealing with a “young” liberal business culture trying to figure out her own way between the traditions of her parents (developed during the closed-economy years) and her new liberal friends (whom she likes to hang out with) with- out getting hurt.

Book Business Ethics and Institutions

Download or read book Business Ethics and Institutions written by Asli M. Colpan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic scholarly study on the business history of Turkey from the nineteenth century until the present. It aims to place the distinctive characteristics of capitalism in Turkey within a global and comparative perspective, dealing with three related issues. First, it examines the institutional context that shaped the capitalist development in Turkey. Second, it focuses on the corporate actors, entrepreneurs and business enterprises that have led the national economic growth. Third, it explores the ethical foundations and social responsibility of business enterprises in the country. The comparative and historical approach sets the volume apart from previous books on the subject. Business, Ethics and Institutions aims to strengthen scholarly and policy understanding of Turkish capitalism and the diversified business groups which dominate the economy by providing a deep analysis of the evolution of political and social institutions which shaped corporate activity. It demonstrates the key role played by large family-owned business groups in Turkey’s development. It also seeks to identify both the similarities and the differences in the Turkish pattern of economic development, making comparisons with Japan, an early example of catch-up, and a more successful model than Turkey. The comparative perspective makes the book highly relevant to a wide range of scholars interested in the institutional foundations of modern capitalism and will be of value to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of business and economic history, ethics, organizational studies, and entrepreneurship.

Book State and Business in Modern Turkey

Download or read book State and Business in Modern Turkey written by Ayse Bugra and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1994-02-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the factors that shape business activity in Republican Turkey and examines the presence of some of these factors in other societies with highly different cultures and histories. Bugra's premise is that neither the institutional framework nor the behavioral regularities of a market economy emerge spontaneously following principles of a universally rational behavior. Rather, these reflect societal characteristics to be shaped by policy measures that ensure the smooth functioning of the market mechanism. The author investigates the sociopolitical context of Turkish entrepreneurship by looking at the development of the private sector in the Republican period; policy process under successive Republican governments; socially defined features of the holding company, the typical big-business unit; and the nature of business associations in Turkey. Her analysis is relevant both to the study of business organization and to the study of structural change in late-industrializing countries and former socialist societies where the shortcomings of standard economic approaches are clear.
