Book excerpt: Single, female lycanthrope: check. Bills to pay: check. A bounty for the hottest single lycanthrope on the block: check. As the sole holdout of the corporate buyout of her apartment building, Joyce Gray is determined to transform her stubborn pride into a masterpiece in order to stay off the streets. Dipping her hands into the dark world of bounty hunting would give her the funds needed to find a new home, somewhere safe from the wolf who’d infected her with the lycanthropy virus. On the surface, the job is simple. For a period of three days, she must keep Wayne Barnes from returning to the New York City area. The owner of the corporation determined to reduce her apartment complex to rubble has a reputation of being straitlaced and playing for keeps. Worse, her virus is ready to roll over to have her belly rubbed and enjoy some positive and intimate attention. But with twenty thousand on the table and a chance to get ahead for once in her life, she’s prepared to get her hands dirty no matter the cost. What she doesn’t know will change her life and plunge her into the murky depths of the black market, where secrets are worth more than money, life is cheap, and anything can be purchased for a price.

Book excerpt: Daisy the Dumpster Dog [FREE eBook, #satire #audiobooks #courtreform #originalism] - a Sordid Tale of Dystopian Hubris and Convenient Canine Rationalizations (But Not a Supreme Court Satire or Parody) by Blade Cort; Book 7 of 7 in the Predictable Paths series. "A Parody of Supreme Proportions! If this is the current state of legal satire, then woe be the system that engenders such drool." Daisy is enjoying a great day, anxiously awaiting the afternoon's dumpster Delights. What? Wait a second. This is where 'Rat Dog' gimps-in from nowhere and sarcastically knocks her oversized ears and stub tail, then treats her friends with equal impertinence. And that's not all. The scrawny, half-breed chihuahua demands his fair share of Delights, angering the lofty purebreds who claim first dibs over lowly mongrels like himself. Perhaps Daisy and friends should collar this impudent, irascible ingrate before he draws them into big trouble with the pedigreed perennial powers that be. Yet the sniveling rat fears nothing and is determined to tussle with the snootiest snouts in the land. Will he succeed - or get popped like the troublesome tick that he is? https://bladecort.com #satire #audiobooks #supremecourtsatire PREDICTABLE PATHS episodes, in sequential order: 1. Book Damaged but Still Good

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damaged, but Still Good is a book that is revelatory in exemplifying that many of us as individuals whether good, bad, ugly, or indifferent are shaped by our experiences as early as childhood. Dexter Howard (2014) states, "That's what's missing as I look at the landscape of our society: identity and much needed affirmation." Mothers are designed to nurture, but fathers provide identity and affirmation. "Without those things, it leaves a hole in the heart of a child." Parents don't realize that broken relationships not only affect the couple involved, but it affects and shapes their children. "We are the sum total of our experiences. And, like a flowing river, those same experiences, and those yet to come, continue to influence and reshape the person we are, and the person we become. None of us are the same as we were yesterday, nor will be tomorrow" (B. J. Neblett). Oftentimes, we ask the question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" However, we learn the best lessons and gain wisdom in the worst circumstances. It is amid life challenges, catastrophes, and calamities that we understand that even when you have experienced great loss, God can still use what you have left! Life has taught me it's not what we go through that damages us, but an unwillingness to forgive the process designed to work for our greater good. The Bible says in Psalms 37:23 that the steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Most of us believe that God is a God that only orders blessings. However, life has shown me that God does not just order blessings, but God orders trials. He orders setbacks, and he orders challenges, but in God's ordering, he will never put on us more than what we can bear.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep under the bustling city, a dirty system of tunnels carries on the commerce of a booming economy. Living in this dark Hades by choice, a prideful young son of immigrants finds that his world is not what it seems to be. Inspired by some of the true facts and urban legends about those tunnels, this story is a tragedy about how we view ourselves and our place in society. The time is the very beginning of the Great Depression, and the place is in and around Chicago of that era. Electric streetcars still dodge horses, wagons and motorcars. The great railroads still operate steam-hauled trains into the city and serve its diverse population via fabled passenger stations. Prohibition is the law of the land, and crooks, criminals, and mobsters of all shapes and sizes are the law of the streets. Frank Cermak is a product of the ethnic neighborhoods, narrowly defined enclaves where narrow minds are common. He sits on the broad shoulders of the city, secure and smug, ready to grab his world by the tail and battle it to submission. The battlegrounds are the tunnels, streets, neighborhoods and canals of the great city, and the warriors are men and women like Frank, themselves caught in the battle without knowing which side they are on. Getting himself too deep into what he considers to be innocent mob activities, Frank is bent to the breaking point. With his stubborn pride ruined, his version of morality shaken, and his prejudices exposed, he must admit his defeat and suffer a horrible disgrace at the hands of cruel and ruthless men. Desperate, Frank struggles to right the world that he had figured all wrong.

She’s not sure if they want her or her brother, but she doesn’t want to find out. Nadine knows one thing for certain: her backwater town is too small for everybody coming to pay her family of two a visit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Arrowsmith, the titular protagonist, grows up in a small Midwestern town where he wants to become a doctor. At medical school he meets an abrasive but brilliant professor, Gottlieb, who becomes his mentor. As Arrowsmith completes his training he begins a career practicing medicine. But, echoing Lewis’s Main Street, small-town life becomes too insular and restricting; his interest in research and not people makes him unpopular, and he decides to work in a research laboratory instead. From there Arrowsmith begins a career that hits all of the ethical quandaries that scientists and those in the medical profession encounter: everything from the ethical problem of research protocol strictness versus saving lives, to doing research for the betterment of mankind versus for turning a profit, to the politics of institutions, to the social problems of wealth and poverty. Arrowsmith struggles with these dilemmas because, like all of us, he isn’t perfect. Despite his interest in helping humanity, he has little interest in people—aside from his serial womanizing—and this makes the path of his career an even harder one to walk. He’s surrounded on all sides by icons of nobility, icons of pride, and icons of rapaciousness, each one distracting him from his calling. Though the book isn’t strictly a satire, few escape Lewis’s biting pen. He skewers everyone indiscriminately: small-town rubes, big-city blowhards, aspiring politicians, doctors of both the noble and greedy variety, hapless ivory-towered researchers, holier-than-thou neighbors, tedious gilded-age socialites, and even lazy and backwards islanders. In some ways, Arrowsmith rivals Main Street in its often-bleak view of human nature—though unlike Main Street, the good to humanity that science offers is an ultimate light at the end of the tunnel. The novel’s publication in 1925 made it one of the first serious “science” novels, exploring all aspects of the life and career of a modern scientist. Lewis was aided in the novel’s preparation by Paul de Kruif, a microbiologist and writer, whose medically-accurate contributions greatly enhance the text’s realist flavor. In 1926 Arrowsmith was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, but Lewis famously declined it. In his refusal letter, he claimed a disinterest in prizes of any kind; but the New York Times reported that those close to him say he was still angered over the Pulitzer’s last-minute snatching of the 1921 prize from Main Street in favor of giving it to The Age of Innocence. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
