Book Understanding the Strength of Focus

Download or read book Understanding the Strength of Focus written by Chris Christian and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-11-04 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a practical book that teaches about discovering reasons for living and focusing on them. When men discover reasons for living and focus on them, they share in the omnipotence of God. Steps that lead to a place of honor must be followed in focus. A snail that is moving unwaveringly in a given direction will arrive faster than a deer running helter-skelter. Understanding the Strength of Focus is a book that concentrates its attention on the following: Energies and virtues are saved when they are channeled toward a given purpose. The ability to be focused is the first principle of dominion. Whatsoever men look at steadily, they will see clearer. Focus is an antidote against frustration and confusion. Focused men can't be separated from the ruling power of God. It is only vision that can guarantee focus. Those who put their hands on kingdom plough are not expected to turn.

Book Language from the Body

  • Author : Sarah F. Taub
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2001-02-26
  • ISBN : 1139428225
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Language from the Body written by Sarah F. Taub and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of meaning in linguistic theory? Generative linguists have severely limited the influence of meaning, claiming that language is not affected by other cognitive processes and that semantics does not influence linguistic form. Conversely, cognitivist and functionalist linguists believe that meaning pervades and motivates all levels of linguistic structure. This dispute can be resolved conclusively by evidence from signed languages. Signed languages are full of iconic linguistic items: words, inflections, and even syntactic constructions with structural similarities between their physical form and their referents' form. Iconic items can have concrete meanings and also abstract meanings through conceptual metaphors. Language from the Body rebuts the generativist linguistic theories which separate form and meaning and asserts that iconicity can only be described in a cognitivist framework where meaning can influence form.

Book Freedom and Despair

Download or read book Freedom and Despair written by David Shulman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lately, it seems as if we wake up to a new atrocity each day. Every morning is now a ritual of scrolling through our Twitter feeds or scanning our newspapers for the latest updates on fresh horrors around the globe. Despite the countless protests we attend, the phone calls we make, or the streets we march, it sometimes feels like no matter how hard we fight, the relentless crush of injustice will never abate. David Shulman knows intimately what it takes to live your beliefs, to return, day after day, to the struggle, despite knowing you are often more likely to lose than win. Interweaving powerful stories and deep meditations, Freedom and Despair offers vivid firsthand reports from the occupied West Bank in Palestine as seen through the eyes of an experienced Israeli peace activist who has seen the Israeli occupation close up as it impacts on the lives of all Palestinian civilians. Alongside a handful of beautifully written and often shocking tales from the field, Shulman meditates deeply on how to understand the evils around him, what it means to persevere as an activist decade after decade, and what it truly means to be free. The violent realities of the occupation are on full display. We get to know and understand the Palestinian shepherds and farmers and Israeli volunteers who face this situation head-on with nonviolent resistance. Shulman does not hold back on acknowledging the daily struggles that often leave him and his fellow activists full of despair. Inspired by these committed individuals who are not prepared to be silent or passive, Shulman suggests a model for ordinary people everywhere. Anyone prepared to take a risk and fight their oppressive political systems, he argues, can make a difference—if they strive to act with compassion and to keep hope alive. This is the moving story of a man who continues to fight for good in the midst of despair. An indispensable book in our era of reactionary politics and refugee crises, political violence and ecological devastation, Freedom and Despair is a gripping memoir of struggle, activism, and hope for peace.
