Download or read book Dogface Soldier written by Wilson A. Heefner and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2010-05-05 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 11, 1943, General Lucian Truscott received the Army's second-highest decoration, the Distinguished Service Cross, for valor in action in Sicily. During his career he also received the Army Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Purple Heart. Truscott was one of the most significant of all U.S. Army generals in World War II, pioneering new combat training methods—including the famous “Truscott Trot”— and excelling as a combat commander, turning the Third Infantry Division into one of the finest divisions in the U.S. Army. He was instrumental in winning many of the most important battles of the war, participating in the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, and southern France. Truscott was not only respected by his peers and “dogfaces”—common soldiers—alike but also ranked by President Eisenhower as second only to Patton, whose command he took over on October 8, 1945, and led until April 1946. Yet no definitive history of his life has been compiled. Wilson Heefner corrects that with the first authoritative biography of this distinguished American military leader. Heefner has undertaken impressive research in primary sources—as well as interviews with family members and former associates—to shed new light on this overlooked hero. He presents Truscott as a soldier who was shaped by his upbringing, civilian and military education, family life, friendships, and evolving experiences as a commander both in and out of combat. Heefner’s brisk narrative explores Truscott’s career through his three decades in the Army and defines his roles in key operations. It also examines Truscott’s postwar role as military governor of Bavaria, particularly in improving living conditions for Jewish displaced persons, removing Nazis from civil government, and assisting in the trials of German war criminals. And it offers the first comprehensive examination of his subsequent career in the Central Intelligence Agency, where he served as senior CIA representative in West Germany during the early days of the Cold War, and later as CIA Director Allen Dulles’s deputy director for coordination in Washington. Dogface Soldier is a portrait of a man who earned a reputation for being honest, forthright, fearless, and aggressive, both as a military officer and in his personal life—a man who, at the dedication ceremony for the Anzio-Nettuno American cemetery in 1945, turned away from the crowd and to the thousands of crosses stretching before him to address those buried there. Heefner has written a definitive biography of a great soldier and patriot.

Book excerpt: A sharp, dark, humorous debut about a teenage commando wannabe who runs amok in a boot camp for juvenile delinquents. Fourteen-year-old Loren is obsessed with all things military: Special Forces, secret missions, rules, and regulations — it’s all so finite and orderly. Especially compared to other parts of Loren’s life. His mom, for example, keeps introducing him to a string of loser boyfriends, and the latest one, the golf pro, is so irritating that Loren decides to stage a night raid and vandalize his beloved golf course. When the mission goes embarrassingly awry, Loren’s mom sends him to 'Camp Ascend!', where a dedicated staff of specialists are trained to whip 'mixed-up' teens back into shape. Or so it seems. What Loren’s mom doesn’t know — and what Loren soon discovers — is that 'Camp Ascend!' is actually a scam run by an ex-con nicknamed 'the Colonel', his ditzy, overly tanned wife, and her manic, kid-hating brother. And so Loren finally has a real-life mission: to free himself and his new posse of delinquent friends from 'Camp Ascend!' and to take the place down.

Book Lying Dog Faced Pony Socialists

Download or read book Lying Dog Faced Pony Socialists written by Madison Moore and published by Post Hill Press. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “No, you haven’t. You’re a lying dog-faced pony soldier,” the Vice President snapped at then-twenty-one-year-old Madison Moore. In a blend of personal narrative and political analysis, Moore shares her personal experience with politics, and highlights the humanitarian disasters socialism produced around the world—and could produce here. Throughout this book, Moore argues for the abandonment of socialism in favor of free market capitalism. Drawing on historical and moral origins, Moore demonstrates how socialism has led only to disastrous outcomes in practice, and how capitalism has fostered human prosperity. In this book, Moore hopes to persuade young Americans that only capitalism—not socialism—can equip them with the necessary tools to face the challenges of the 21st century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1936 Berlin, an unlikely friendship develops between Sidney Klein, the son of an American Army officer, and Klaus Bergman, the son of a Nazi SS officer. Although they are of complete polar opposites when it comes to the political spectrum, they develop a trust and friendship that will remain throughout the coming world war. When they part ways after the end of school, they promise each other, “Till we meet again.” Neither of the friends could possibly guess that their paths would cross again in the least likely of places and under the most unusual of circumstances. Their career choices will lead them along very similar, yet diverse paths. Their combat experiences are quite different, but both are equally affected by the death and destruction of war. Sidney’s girlfriend, Rachel, travels with her Aunt Sylvia to Germany to help Sylvia’s Uncle Abraham close his shop and move out of Germany. It is also to be an opportunity for Rachel to experience the city nightlife of Berlin. A series of events that result in Rachel and Aunt Sylvia losing their passports and coming to the attention of German authorities sees them being arrested and sent first to jail and then the concentration camps. Sidney makes a difficult decision to join the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) in order to get to Germany and rescue his beloved Rachel. He uses all available means to locate where Rachel is being held and does his utmost to be placed in a position to liberate her. Life in the concentration camp is brutal, dangerous, and subject to mistreatment. Both women are fortunate in possessing skills that make them “essential” personnel, extending their lives and probably improving their chances for survival. As the war draws to a close, Sidney is leading a rescue party headed for the camp at Dachau, and Rachel. Little does he suspect that the promise he and Klaus Bergman made so many years ago will be fulfilled. They will meet again in the living hell called Dachau.
