Book Doing Cultural Geography

Download or read book Doing Cultural Geography written by Pamela Shurmer-Smith and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2002-03-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Cultural Geography is an introduction to cultural geography that integrates theoretical discussion with applied examples. The emphasis throughout is on doing. Recognizing that many undergraduates have difficulty with both theory and methods courses, the text demystifies the ‘theory’ informing cultural geography and encourages students to engage directly with theory in practice. It emphasizes what can be done with humanist, Marxist, poststructuralist, feminist, and postcolonial theory, demonstrating that this is the best way to prompt students to engage with the otherwise daunting theoretical literature.

Book Family and Community Life of Older People

Download or read book Family and Community Life of Older People written by Miriam Bernard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Family life has changed rapidly over te past fifty years and the number of people living longer increases year on year Family and Community Life of Older People revisits three areas (Bethnal Green in London, Wolverhampton in the Midlands and Woodford in Essex) which were the subject of classic studies in the late 1940s and 1950s and explores changes to the family and community lives of older people. The book examines issues such as: *changes in household composition *changes in the geographical proximity of kin and relatives *the extent and type of help provided by the family *contact and relationships with neighbours *relationships with friends *involvement in social and leisure activities *experiences of minority ethnic groups. These questions are explored through a unique set of data including census material, and survey data from interviews with over 600 older people. A key finding is that over the past 50 years we have moved from an old age experienced within the context of the family group to one shaped by personal communities in which friends may feature as significantly as immediate kin and relatives. Family and Community Life of Older People is a major contribution to the sociology of the family, of ageing, and of urban life and points up the social policy issues for an ageing society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is an urban history of London during the pivotal years of the 1960s and 1970s, when the metropolis was transformed from an industrial city that the Victorians might have recognised to an embryonic modern 'world city.' Previous work on London in these years has tended to focus upon the 1960s -in particular the 'Swinging London' phenomenon. Mary Quant, Carnaby Street and the King's Road, Chelsea, all appear in these pages, but it is argued that the 'swinging moment' of the mid-sixties was a passing symptom of a much broader transformation from an industrial to a service-based city, and it is that transformation which this book examines. London is too complex and diverse a city to be comprehended in a simple linear narrative; this book adopts instead an innovative approach to urban history, by which London life and London's transformation are examined through a number of case studies looking at specific themes and areas of the city. Consumerism and the 'experience economy', home ownership and gentrification, deindustrialisation and deprivation, racial tension and unemployment, the attrition of public services and the steady loss of confidence in public agencies - national and local - emerge as overarching themes from the individual case studies in this book. Their combined effect, it is argued, was to prepare the ground for the Britain that Margaret Thatcher is usually held to have created after 1979 - without Thatcher herself having anything to do it"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Travis investigates a central problem in philosophy, one of the most puzzling. Thought must be about a world independent of us. But our capacities for thought shape thought's objects. So it can seem that what is true, and what is not, cannot be independent of us. Objectivity and the Parochial suggests how we might resolve this paradox.
