They teamed up together to create what was known as the "Effective Behavior Supports (EBS)” program. This program is currently known as the Positive Behavioral Interventions Support (PBIS). PBIS uses evidence and statistics-based systems, procedures, and approaches to structure behavioral development in terms of pupil progress in educational accomplishment. PBIS focuses on the needs of pupils who are at risk. As well as the educational desires of all learners concerning behavior. The PBIS program seeks to construct an atmosphere to incorporate instruction and learning to take place in an educational institution. Some researchers believe that the PBIS program can assist in increasing the efficacy of instructional delivery. PBIS is a way for institutions to promote decent conduct and academic performance. When PBIS programs are implemented and infused as part of an institution, school members get to educate students about behavior. The PBIS program functions in the same way educators and staff members of a school would teach math, reading, social studies, and science, just as they would facilitate instruction in any other subject. PBIS promotes positive behavior and helps students with academic growth.

In this study, various discipline models are discussed and analyzed. One particular model that claims to significantly reduce discipline referrals is Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). The primary purpose of this study was to determine if PBIS is effective in reducing discipline referrals in a particular Midwest suburban 6-8 middle school. In addition, the referrals were analyzed to determine if there was a significant change in the academic achievement in the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) math and communication arts test scores after implementation of PBIS in 2008-2009. The population in this study was approximately 600 students attending a suburban Midwestern grade 6-8 middle school with fifty-nine (59) teachers and two (2) administrators. Behavior referral data for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 academic years were compared to the 2008-2009 academic year to determine if there was a significant difference in the number of referrals since the program was initiated. In addition, the referrals were analyzed by using a frequency count to determine if conclusions can be drawn from the types of referrals. A comparison of academic achievement, using the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) was also used to compare the pre and post initiation of PBIS. A t test and an analysis of variance revealed significant effects were only shown for the behavior referral data. The null hypothesis was rejected resulting in acceptance of the alternative hypothesis stating that a significant decrease in behavior referrals occurred. This information provides evidence that PBIS should continue to be implemented to minimize the number of behavior referrals. On the contrary, there was no significant effect on academic achievement according to the MAP results collected. Further studies are necessary to show whether there are any long term effects on academic achievement.

In various research studies, positive student and school behavior outcomes have been associated with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) since its implementation in schools in the late 1990s. However, additional research in understanding the impact of PBIS practices on reported school suspension, school climate perceptions, and student academic achievement (i.e., standardized test scores) would be useful. This study could potentially contribute to the literature and fill a gap not yet explored on the relationship between PBIS implementation and discipline practices impacting African American students, school climate perceptions, and student achievement. School officials can utilize this study's findings to determine their dedication and commitment to PBIS as a behavior intervention within school systems. Utilizing data collected from a large urban school district in Ohio, this study will examine the association between PBIS implementation, the suspension rate of all students, individual student achievement, and school climate perceptions while emphasizing PBIS' impact on African American students. The research data in this study will focus on grade levels elementary through high school. The data will be analyzed using linear regressions. Limitations of this study will be discussed.

The researcher used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) to conduct the review. Studies were reviewed and analyzed for common themes related to the effects of PBIS on student discipline, student engagement, and teacher perceptions. The systematic review of PBIS implementation in K-12 school settings revealed PBIS decreased student behavior incidences, increased student engagement, and teachers had positive perceptions of PBIS. The review also revealed PBIS contributed to positive classroom cultures, increased student confidence, and increased academic progress for students. Implications can be used by schools to select positive behavior management programs for students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this single longitudinal case study was to evaluate the impact of PBIS as a viable alternative for an elementary school to improve behavior and academic outcomes for all students at the Tier 1 level. The foundation of Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) and its practices is that social behaviors and academic achievement are connected. When students spend more time in behavior-related activities, it becomes more challenging to participate in activities related to learning academic content. PBIS is designed to reduce inappropriate behaviors and provide more time to improve student academic performance by establishing a positive behavioral environment. In this case study, data were collected through the examination of office discipline referrals (ODRs), suspensions, and state reading scores both before and after implementation of PBIS Tier 1. The data were analyzed descriptively and comparatively over a four year span (0, 1, 2, and 3 years). The results suggested the number of documented ODRs and suspensions decreased during Year 1 and Year 2 when compared to baseline Year 0. ODRs and out-of-school suspensions greatly increased during the fourth year, while in-school suspensions greatly decreased during the fourth year when compared to baseline Year 0. Extraneous variables were discussed as possible causes for the results reported in Year 3. When the case study analyzed the standardized reading test scores grades third through fifth results were mixed when compared to baseline and behavior data. The data collected suggested a measureable difference in students' academic reading achievement based on state reading score performance during the three years following the implementation of PBIS Tier 1. When compared to the increase in ODRs, the academic scores do not support the research finding. Qualitative data were also analyzed after using open-ended interview questions for a deeper understanding of staff members' perceptions of behavior management and discipline procedures used with the implementation of PBIS Tier1. Results indicated that implementing PBIS Tier 1 helped to produce positive changes in behavior and improved the decision-making abilities of students. Although the results affirmed that PBIS Tier 1 was effective in reducing behaviors and increasing reading scores, further study is recommended on how to improve sustainability in an elementary school setting. Results of this case study could also benefit administrators in this school district as they evaluate the effectiveness of PBIS Tier 1 and plan to implement further interventions or programs.

Book excerpt: Disciplinary practices and protocols in schools have been a notable concern over the past 30 years. The traditional punitive punishment-based tactics have not proven to be effective in changing student behavior. Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) is a proactive alternative that puts whole school systems in a place wherein students and teachers share in the responsibility of building a culture and climate of behaviors that produce positive outcomes. Research based on the implementation of PBIS in schools has concluded that problem behaviors decrease, students and staff feel safe, and attendance improves. There is a body of research that concludes that implementing such changes is effective in reducing office discipline referrals in major disciplinary actions and in creating a positive school climate. The current study examined the effectiveness of changing from reactive, punitive, zero-tolerance practices to proactive positive behavioral interventions. The research focused on the effects of PBIS on the percentage and number of office discipline referrals (ODRs) for African-American and special education students after the first year’s implementation of PBIS in a school district of approximately 6,000 students. The results indicate that ODRs decreased during the implementation of PBIS.

Book excerpt: Positive program interventions are an essential need for students who display problem behaviors in school and in efforts to support student success, Positive Behavior Intervention Supports ("PBIS") have been used to support students who display these types of behaviors since its introduction in 1997 (Sugai & Simonsen, 2012). Creating effective classroom environments is an example of a PBIS strategy while benefits associated with PBIS include improved school climate, improved academic achievement and reductions in referrals to the office for discipline (ODR's) (Flannery et al., 2014). While numerous studies have been conducted since 1997 to describe, inform and assess outcomes associated with PBIS, the research to date has not adequately identified the specific ingredients needed to support the implementation of PBIS in schools; as such, there is an urgent need to identify these key components (Sugai & Simonsen, 2012). This graduate project conducted a systematic literature review of fifteen journal articles that met the inclusion criteria to explore what barriers are keeping schools from accessing and activate the key environmental, organizational and/or program ingredients that contribute to the success of PBIS in schools. The findings from this review indicate that the key ingredients for success are professional development, staff buy in and leadership support whereas time and money are the key barriers that get in the way of schools accomplishing their goals (or implementing PBIS to the fullest? The implications for stakeholders include ensuring time and money is available when implementing PBIS.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to determine the effect of School-Wide Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) on students’ academic success, specifically in reading and math. There is a growing problem with accountability on teachers to ensure their students’ success. However, one of the many barriers of ensuring this success is the behavioral aspects of the student. This study took a look at one particular framework, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), designed to help students overall academic success to determine if there is a relationship between the framework and student achievement data (Mississippi Academic Assessment Program) by conducting a Multivariance analysis of variance, or MANOVA. PBIS is a framework designed to meet the needs of students behaviorally, to enhance the overall academic success of students. This study took a look at five schools (both with and without full, school-wide PBIS implementation), 398 third grade students’ academic success of reading and math Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) scale scores in the southern region of the state. Also, there were previous studies conducted to demonstrate the success rate of students in terms of discipline, not specifically targeting students’ academic success. This study found that there is a difference in academic scores of students who participated in PBIS than those that did not. However, recommendations for conducting this study in the future will include the researcher to include more regions of the entire state, conduct study post Covid-19, add additional grade levels, and separate the two content areas.
