Download or read book The Effects of Therapeutic Horseback Riding on Communication in Children and Adolescents with Developmental Disorders written by Shelby Anne Holm and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mixed-methods study examined the effects of participation in a 10-week therapeutic horseback riding program on communicative behaviors in participants diagnosed with Autism spectrum disorder or Down syndrome. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructors utilized the Naples Equestrian Challenge Participant Initial Evaluation to complete a pre-evaluation prior to the first riding session and a post-evaluation during the last session. Following the post-evaluation, the researcher collected qualitative data through conducting parent interviews. The study included 16 participants (M = 12.62; age range 5-23 years old, 8 females and 8 males). Change scores for each participant were calculated and an aggregated mean for pre- and post-evaluations were determined and results indicated increases in all seven communication indicators. Analysis of parent interviews also revealed improvements in communicative skills and behaviors. Overall, results indicate improvements in communication for children and adolescents with developmental disability and the need to further investigate therapeutic horseback riding as an efficacious therapy.

Book Therapeutic Horseback Riding in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book Therapeutic Horseback Riding in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Erica Weidler Baimbridge and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animals have long served humans in a working capacity but they have also served as companions and thus, many humans have a bond with animals. Several studies have demonstrated the health benefits of animals on certain ailments and health conditions. While there have been some studies showing the effectiveness of therapeutic riding and hippotherapy on children with disabilities, there has only been one study to date that has evaluated the effects of therapeutic horseback riding (TR) on children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), yielding tentative positive results in social motivation, sensory seeking/sensitivity, and less distractibility and inattention. The current study sought to expand and partially replicate the previous study to determine possible further effects of therapeutic horseback riding in children with ASD related to social reciprocity, anxiety, repetitive behaviors, and quality of life. Significant main effects were found for TR on social responsiveness and repetitive behaviors, but not for anxiety or quality of life. Implications and limitations of the current study are discussed..

Book An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study of Mobile Application Development for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Participating in an Adapted Horseback Riding Program

Download or read book An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study of Mobile Application Development for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Participating in an Adapted Horseback Riding Program written by Benazir Meera and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction: The literature on equine assisted services has identified a significant gap in the generalizability of benefits beyond the horseback riding settings for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A potential strategy for enhancing the generalizability of skills of children with ASD beyond the horseback riding sessions is by integrating parents as co-interventionists. One of the notable ways to include parents as part of intervention delivery is with the use of mobile technology or mobile applications. Technological interventions that are mediated by parents, such as mobile applications, can serve as cost-effective modalities of intervention delivery. Moreover, these interventions have the potential to aid the carry-over of benefits obtained from an adapted horseback riding program for children with ASD. Hence, the purpose of this dissertation study was to develop, refine and test the usability and social validity of a parent-mediated mobile application to be used in conjunction with an adapted horseback riding program for children with ASD.Methods: A three-phase exploratory sequential mixed methods design guided by the Technology Acceptance Model was employed in this study. Using a convenience sampling technique, a total of six participants were recruited from an ongoing adapted horseback riding program at Three Gaits Therapeutic Horsemanship Center (n=3 parents of children with ASD; n=3 certified therapeutic riding instructors). Semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with parents and certified therapeutic riding instructors respectively in the qualitative phase. In the interim development phase, a mobile application was developed. In the quantitative phase, a survey questionnaire adopted from the system usability scale and social validity literature was implemented. Results: Three themes were constructed throughout the qualitative phase that captured the needs, perceptions, and experiences of the participants: (a) Everybody's functionality is different, (b) To steer this huge animal is so powerful, and (c) Make a connection to horseback riding. Based on these qualitative findings, a parent-mediated mobile application was developed in the interim development phase. Upon implementing this newly developed parent-mediated mobile application, the participants reported a mean score of 80.5 on the System Usability Scale. Per this score, the usability of the newly developed application was reported as acceptable in the acceptability range and good-excellent adjective rating by the participants. In terms of social validity, all participants reported a favorable response of 'agree' or' strongly agree' to all of the questions about the mobile application's social validity. Question.15 had the highest mean of 3.6, indicating that the majority of participants strongly agreed that they would recommend this mobile application to other families. Discussion: This study's findings report that a parent-mediated mobile application may complement an adapted horseback riding program for children with ASD. This study showed the relevance of including parents and certified therapeutic riding instructors in mobile app co-development. Engaging these key users of the mobile application in the evaluation of its usability and social validity revealed how useful and easy to use it would be for them, thus demonstrating their positive intentions in using this newly developed mobile application with their children. Conclusion: Future studies should focus on examining the efficacy and effectiveness of the mobile application in improving the horsemanship skills and motor outcomes of children gained during adapted horseback riding sessions. Future mobile applications should also contain more individualized learning content and be expanded to include other types of equine assisted services as well as other adapted physical activity programs.

Book Comparing the Effectiveness of Social Skill Development Interventions with Therapeutic Horseback Riding in Children with Autism An Alternating Treatment Design

Download or read book Comparing the Effectiveness of Social Skill Development Interventions with Therapeutic Horseback Riding in Children with Autism An Alternating Treatment Design written by Lauren W Harrell and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to examine and compare the effects of applied behavior analysis treatments in conjunction with therapeutic horseback riding (THR) and the improvement of social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The research study compared the effectiveness of social behavior approaches during three conditions (THR, THR with token reinforcement, and THR with visual cues) using a single-subject research design to determine the "best treatment" for improving social skills among children with ASD (N=4). During the comparison phase, the researcher determined the frequency rate of receptive social skills and frequency of expressive social skills among each condition to determine the most effective approach in facilitating observed social skills. Results of this study indicated that while all three conditions increased social skills (receptive and expressive), the use of token reinforcement was the most effective in increasing the number of receptive and expressive communications. Practical implications and future research needs are provided for addressing social skill development with children with ASD.

Book New Research on Short term Memory

Download or read book New Research on Short term Memory written by Noah B. Johansen and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2008 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short-term memory, sometimes referred to as "primary", "working" or "active" memory, is said to hold a small amount of information for about 20 seconds. Estimates of short-term memory capacity vary -- from about 3 or 4 elements (i.e., words, digits, or letters) to about 9 elements: a commonly cited capacity is 7±2 elements. In contrast, long-term memory indefinitely stores a seemingly unlimited amount of information. Short-term memory can be described as the capacity (or capacities) for holding in mind, in an active, highly available state, a small amount of information. The information held in short-term memory may be: recently processed sensory input; items recently retrieved from long-term memory; or the result of recent mental processing, although that is more generally related to the concept of working memory. This book presents the latest research in the field from around the world.

Book Influence of Therapeutic Horseback Riding on Gross Motor Function in Children with Autism

Download or read book Influence of Therapeutic Horseback Riding on Gross Motor Function in Children with Autism written by Jennifer Marie Lockhart and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is a disorder that has increased in numbers and prevalence within today’s society. Though no cure has been found, recent studies have focused on different therapeutic intervention techniques offered to autistic individuals, including the use of Therapeutic Horseback Riding. This study analyzes the relationship of therapeutic horseback riding on gross motor function in children with Autism. Four children participated in a ten week previously established therapeutic horseback riding program at French Camp, Mississippi. Gross motor function was assessed before and after five riding sessions by recording performances of eleven skills from Motor Skills Inventory (MSI). Only two participants completed all riding sessions and MSI assessments to be eligible for this study. Statistical analysis was conducted using Friedman’s Two Way Analysis of Variance by Ranks. There were no significant differences in the assessments before/after the riding sessions as well as the entire period of the ten week program.

Book Effects of Hippotherapy on the Motivation and Social Interaction social Communication for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book Effects of Hippotherapy on the Motivation and Social Interaction social Communication for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Cecilia Llambias and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engagement in purposeful activities is essential for development and is difficult for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who also have impairments of social interaction and communication. In hippotherapy, riding and other horse related activities can be used to promote children's engagement and communication skills. A multiple baseline design across eight children ages 4 to 7 years was used to assess the effects of hippotherapy. Intervention effects were strong for 7 children's engagement and 4 children's responses to requests (responsivity). Limited effects were found for expressive communication. Parent and teacher reports pre- and post- intervention indicated positive changes. Hippotherapy may be a valuable addition to conventional treatments to increase engagement for children with ASD. Factors related to the environment, therapeutic strategies, and participants must be considered. The study's results will assist clinicians and parents of children with ASD in making decisions about the use of hippotherapy, an alternative therapy approach.

Book The Effects of Hippotherapy in Children and Adolescents with Autism

Download or read book The Effects of Hippotherapy in Children and Adolescents with Autism written by Emily Layne Ybarbo and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this systematic review was to investigate the effectiveness of hippotherapy, also known as horse- or equine-assisted therapy, for improving the socialization and communication behaviors of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The PubMed research database was used to search for relevant studies. Six studies were evaluated and demonstrated overall mixed findings for the use of hippotherapy as an effective treatment technique for communication and socialization skills. To further analyze the strength of these findings, the selected studies were evaluated for limitations related to outcome measure selected and treatment design. The present analysis revealed four main limitations: 1) lack of established treatment protocol led to differences with how hippotherapy was delivered; 2) most assessment measures were based on parent report; 3) small sample sizes; and 4) multiple treatment interference. While these limitations do not detract from the information gleaned from the treatment and research, implementing a standard protocol would make the replicability easier for future clinicians.
