Download or read book Identity Matters written by Donna LeCourt and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity Matters explores the question that consistently plagues composition teachers: why do their pedagogies so often fail? Donna LeCourt suggests that the answer may lie with the very identities, values, and modes of expression higher education cultivates. In a book that does precisely what it theorizes, LeCourt analyzes student-written literacy autobiographies to examine how students interact with and challenge cultural theories of identity. This analysis demonstrates that writing instruction does, indeed, matter and has a significant influence on how students imagine their potential in both academic and cultural realms. LeCourt paints not only a compelling and vexing picture of how students interact with academic discourse as both mind and body, but also offers hope for a reconceived pedagogy of social-material writing practice.
Download or read book Inclusive Ethics written by Ingmar Persson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inclusive Ethics begins from two ideas which are part of our everyday morality, namely that we have a moral reason to benefit or do good to other beings, and that justice requires these benefits to be distributed equally. A morality comprising these two general principles will be exceedingly hard to apply as these principles will have to be balanced against each in an intuitive fashion, but also because the notion of what benefits beings is quite complex, comprising both experiential components of pleasure and successful exercises of autonomy. Ingmar Persson argues that, on philosophical reflection, these ideas turn out to be more far-reaching than we imagine. In particular, the reason to benefit commits us to benefit beings by bringing them into existence. Further, since grounds that are commonly used to justify that some are better off than others - such as their being more deserving or having rights to more - are untenable, justice requires a more extensive equality. The book concludes by reflecting on the problems of getting people to accept a morality which differs markedly from the morality with which they have grown up.

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Leibniz s Philosophy written by N. J. Fox and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) was one of the first Modern philosophers, and as such, one of the most significant. His contributions were often pathbreaking and his imprint still remains on fields such as logic, mathematics, science, international law, and ethics. While publishing relatively little during his life, he was in regular correspondence with important philosophers and even political leaders. The Historical Dictionary of Leibniz's Philosophy sheds light not only on his philosophical thought but also the impact it had on the thinking of his contemporaries. They, and he, are described in numerous cross-referenced dictionary entries. Also included are other entries that present his writings, explain his concepts, and trace his action in specific fields. The introduction sums much of this up and_along with the bibliography_provides a strong foundation for further study.

Download or read book How Life Emerges from Inanimate Matter written by Bernard Korzeniewski and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how the phenomenon of life emerges gradually from the elements of inanimate matter. It shows that, first, this transition occurs in space, when we move from elementary particles and atoms, through molecules and their complexes, cells, tissues and organs to entire individuals. Second, this transition also happened (and is still happening) in time, during biological evolution, when the first living systems originated spontaneously from organic compounds and then evolved step by step through bacteria to plants, animals and us. Third, the embryonic development from a fertilized egg to an adult individual occurs both in space and time. This book is unique as it analyzes all three processes in terms of their physical, chemical, biochemical, thermodynamic, energetic, genetic, cellular, physiological, embryological, evolutionary and cybernetic aspects.
