Book Outsourcing America

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most controversial topics in the news is the outsourcing of American jobs to other countries. Outsourced jobs have extended well beyond the manufacturing sector to include white-collar professionals, particularly in information technology, financial services, and customer service. Outsourcing America reveals just how much outsourcing is taking place, what its impact has been and will continue to be, and what can be done about the loss of jobs. More than an exposé, Outsourcing America shows how offshoring is part of the historical economic shift toward globalism and free trade, and demonstrates its impact on individual lives and communities. In addition, the book now features a new chapter on immigration policies and outsourcing, and advice on how individuals can avoid becoming victims of outsourcing. The authors discuss policies that countries like India and China use to attract U.S. industries, and they offer frank recommendations that business and political leaders must consider in order to confront this crisis—and bring more high-paying jobs back to the U.S.A.

Book Outsourcing the American Dream

Download or read book Outsourcing the American Dream written by Christopher M. England and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outsourcing the American Dream addresses an interesting paradox: in a time of unprecedented prosperity, why have millions of Americans lost faith in their ability to prosper? Why do millions of Americans fail to achieve financial abundance in a nation where unlimited economic opportunity abounds? Today’s business environment is chaotic, to say the least – continually shifting political and social conditions, market dislocations, rapid technological obsolescence, and turbulent international competition. The most common response to such fragmentary business patterns has been corporate downsizing. Numerous corporations have indiscriminately cut layers of management and technical expertise to reduce corporate costs, strengthen share price, or take advantage of technological advances. In Outsourcing the American Dream, the author argues the number one reason for all business failures in America is the lack of bold, decisive, and visionary leadership in business and government. Based on his first-hand experience and research, Outsourcing the American Dream explores the often devastating consequences of corporate mismanagement and downsizing; offers innovative solutions for leaders in business and government; and candidly discusses the individual’s own responsibility for job security and career satisfaction. Outsourcing the American Dream offers something for anyone seeking to take control of his or her own life and destiny.

Book The Fissured Workplace

Download or read book The Fissured Workplace written by David Weil and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-17 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twentieth century, large companies employing many workers formed the bedrock of the U.S. economy. Today, on the list of big business's priorities, sustaining the employer-worker relationship ranks far below building a devoted customer base and delivering value to investors. As David Weil's groundbreaking analysis shows, large corporations have shed their role as direct employers of the people responsible for their products, in favor of outsourcing work to small companies that compete fiercely with one another. The result has been declining wages, eroding benefits, inadequate health and safety protections, and ever-widening income inequality. From the perspectives of CEOs and investors, fissuring--splitting off functions that were once managed internally--has been phenomenally successful. Despite giving up direct control to subcontractors and franchises, these large companies have figured out how to maintain the quality of brand-name products and services, without the cost of maintaining an expensive workforce. But from the perspective of workers, this strategy has meant stagnation in wages and benefits and a lower standard of living. Weil proposes ways to modernize regulatory policies so that employers can meet their obligations to workers while allowing companies to keep the beneficial aspects of this business strategy.

Book Outsourcing in America

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, language: English, abstract: Americans are crying foul on the way their economic future has been put at risk. American corporations have literary opened a Pandora’s Box, in their quest to reduce the expenses on getting some specific tasks accomplished. This is at the expense of the Americans who, day by day are losing lucrative jobs to foreigners who are experts in the various fields. In the early 2000, the media was flooded with reports on how the US was slowly doing itself an injustice by unleashing some of the best jobs offshore to China, India and China, where the cost of getting the job done was much cheaper. The government’s acknowledgement through Dr. Gregory Mankiw, who used to be President Bush’s Chief Economic Advisor in 2003, raged the storm even further. His assertions that exporting of very high value jobs was productive for the country were unsettling. This essay seeks to explore how Americans are highly disadvantaged by the outsourcing evil that has struck the US like a plague. Moreover, the various options available for the country to redeem itself are further discussed and examined deeply. As peter DeFazio puts it “We are entirely outsourcing United States’ industrial base to China. Economic implications along with national security issues are a concern”. Outsourcing has become a reality that has posed a dilemma in the USA. Experts indicate that the phenomenon is unstoppable and can never be ignored. More than 14 million white collar jobs are vulnerable of being outsourced. It should be noted that these are high paying jobs with as average salary of $31, 720. By the end of 2005, more than 800,000 jobs had been moved overseas from the US. Various fields have been adversely affected. Notably, any work that can be sent over the wire is likely to be outsourced. Some of the fields include information technology, newspaper reporting, call-center operators, legal services, engineering tasks and accounting. Moreover reports have indicated that more than 2 million jobs in the banking and securities sector are likely to move overseas in thus. There are also more than 700,000 customer

Book excerpt: Virtually every American has an immediate, visceral reaction to the word outsourcing. The vast majority feel threatened by it. Most see it as one of the biggest causes of job loss in the economy. Pundits regularly attack the industry and politicians have spoken of Benedict Arnold CEOs and Patriot employers. Outsourcing has become synonymous with some of our biggest fears for the American economy and the future of the American Dream. It has been blamed for the breakdown of the social contract between companies and workers as well as the veritable downfall of the once great American middle class.& ;& ;But is this modern-day revolution in business practice the dire threat that people believe it to be? Do the costs truly outweigh the benefits?& ;& ;The Moral Case on Outsourcing provides a comprehensive look at the social, political, and moral implications of this controversial practice. Download or read book Out of Sight written by Erik Loomis and published by New Press, The. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative analysis of labor, globalization, and environmental harm by the award-winning historian and author of A History of America in Ten Strikes. In the current state of our globalized economy, corporations have no incentive to protect their workers or the environment. Jobs moves seamlessly across national borders while the laws that protect us from rapacious behavior remain bound by them. As a result, labor exploitation and toxic pollution remain standard practice. In Out of Sight, Erik Loomis—a historian of both the labor and environmental movements—follows a narrative that runs from the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City to the collapse of the Rana Plaza factory outside of Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2013. He demonstrates that our modern systems of industrial production are just as dirty and abusive as they were during the Industrial Revolution and the Gilded Age. The only difference is that the ugly side of manufacturing is now hidden in faraway places where workers are most vulnerable. In this Choice Outstanding Academic Title, Loomis shows that the great environmental victories of twentieth-century America—the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the EPA—were actually union victories. Using this history as a call to action, Out of Sight proposes a path toward regulations that follow corporations wherever they do business, putting the power back in workers’ hands. “The story told here is tragic and important.” —Bill McKibben “Erik Loomis prescribes how activists can take back our country—for workers and those who care about the health of our planet.” —Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH)

Book The Effect of Outsourcing on the U S Productivity and Employment

Download or read book The Effect of Outsourcing on the U S Productivity and Employment written by Asama Kulvanitchaiyanunt and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two sides of debate on trends of outsourcing. On the one hand, companies in favor of offshore outsourcing claim that according to globalization, outsourcing is the one of the strategies moving companies toward world-class. Outsourcing is not only reducing labor cost, but also helping companies extend their service globally. On the other hand, many experts are opposed to the practice believe that it takes jobs away from the country and compromises the security and stability of American industries. Trends in outsourcing do not seem to exist. The study presented in this thesis explores the linkages between outsourcing and productivity, focusing on measurement issues in United States manufacturing. More specifically the research investigates the impact of outsourcing on manufacturing employment. The data analysis shows that the productivity, especially in high-tech industries, as it related to outsourcing measurement is not accurate. This poor measurement of outsourcing, both domestic and international, may result in understand of the amount of outsourcing that occurs in aggregate or in the manufacturing sector. The research also indicates that offshore outsourcing is not a direct cause of high rates of unemployment. The amount of outsourcing has been low proportion of total unemployment rate of the country. In manufacturing sector, domestic outsourcing is important issue of mass layoffs. Offshoring, however, is not the key subject of mass layoffs due to the low proportion.
