Book Challenges to Globalization

Download or read book Challenges to Globalization written by Robert E. Baldwin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People passionately disagree about the nature of the globalization process. The failure of both the 1999 and 2003 World Trade Organization's (WTO) ministerial conferences in Seattle and Cancun, respectively, have highlighted the tensions among official, international organizations like the WTO, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, nongovernmental and private sector organizations, and some developing country governments. These tensions are commonly attributed to longstanding disagreements over such issues as labor rights, environmental standards, and tariff-cutting rules. In addition, developing countries are increasingly resentful of the burdens of adjustment placed on them that they argue are not matched by commensurate commitments from developed countries. Challenges to Globalization evaluates the arguments of pro-globalists and anti-globalists regarding issues such as globalization's relationship to democracy, its impact on the environment and on labor markets including the brain drain, sweat shop labor, wage levels, and changes in production processes, and the associated expansion of trade and its effects on prices. Baldwin, Winters, and the contributors to this volume look at multinational firms, foreign investment, and mergers and acquisitions and present surprising findings that often run counter to the claim that multinational firms primarily seek countries with low wage labor. The book closes with papers on financial opening and on the relationship between international economic policies and national economic growth rates.

Book International Trade in East Asia

Download or read book International Trade in East Asia written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The practice of trading across international borders has undergone a series of changes with great consequences for the world trading community, the result of new trade agreements, a number of financial crises, the emergence of the World Trade Organization, and countless other less obvious developments. In International Trade in East Asia, a group of esteemed contributors provides a summary of empirical factors of international trade specifically as they pertain to East Asian countries such as China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Comprised of twelve fascinating studies, International Trade in East Asia highlights many of the trading practices between countries within the region as well as outside of it. The contributors bring into focus some of the region's endemic and external barriers to international trade and discuss strategies for improving productivity and fostering trade relationships. Studies on some of the factors that drive exports, the influence of research and development, the effects of foreign investment, and the ramifications of different types of protectionism will particularly resonate with the financial and economic communities who are trying to keep pace with this dramatically altered landscape.

Book How Does Foreign Direct Investment Affect Economic Growth

Download or read book How Does Foreign Direct Investment Affect Economic Growth written by Mr.Eduardo Borensztein and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1994-09-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We test the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth in a cross-country regression framework, utilizing data on FDI flows from industrial countries to 69 developing countries over the last two decades. Our results suggest that FDI is an important vehicle for the transfer of technology, contributing relatively more to growth than domestic investment. However, the higher productivity of FDI holds only when the host country has a minimum threshold stock of human capital. In addition, FDI has the effect of increasing total investment in the economy more than one for one, which suggests the predominance of complementarity effects with domestic firms.

Book Foreign Direct Investment and Employment

Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment and Employment written by Magnus Blomström and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We compare the relation between foreign affiliate production and parent employment in U.S. manufacturing multinationals with that in Swedish firms. U.S. multinationals appear to have allocated some of their more labor intensive operations selling in world markets to affiliates in developing countries, reducing the labor intensity in their home production. Swedish multinationals produce relatively little in developing countries and most of that has been for sale within host countries with import-substituting trade regimes. The great majority of Swedish affiliate production is in high-income countries, the U.S. and Europe, and is associated with more employment, particularly blue-collar employment, in the parent companies. The small Swedish-owned production that does take place in developing countries is also associated with more white-collar employment at home. The effects on white-collar employment within the Swedish firms have grown smaller and weaker over time.

Book Investigating the Impact of Predicted Fall of Foreign Direct Investment on Gross Domestic Product in Low Income Countries

Download or read book Investigating the Impact of Predicted Fall of Foreign Direct Investment on Gross Domestic Product in Low Income Countries written by Niyungeko Antoine and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fall of foreign direct investment inflows (FDI) are predicted to in 2020. The consequences of that prediction on economies of low, low middle, and upp-middle income countries are still unknown. The general objective of this paper is investigating the consequences of the predicted fall of FDI on economies as measured by Gross domestic product (GDP) of LMUMI countries. Specifically, the study analyses to what extent FDI was related to GDP, household consumption (HHC), export (EXP), import (IMP) and gross capital formation (GCF). It also analyses the impact of FDI on GDP, HHC, EXP, IMP and GCF. The paper finally examines direct and indirect effect of FDI on GDP via GDP, HHC, EXP, IMP and GCF. Spearman correlation, robust regression, bootstrap procedure, and robust mediation were used. The findings show a strong and positive correlation, a positive and statistically significant impact of FDI on other variables, statistically significant indirect effect of FDI on GDP via mediator variables (HHC, EXP, IMP, and GCF). The predicted fall of FDI will have a negative impact on all variables analyzed. Governments in low, low middle, and upper middle-income countries should prepare a clear plan to reduce the impact of the reduction of household income, export, import and gross capital formation. The ultimate consequence will be increasing in the unemployment rate, decreasing in gross domestic per capita, increasing in poverty, and decline in country competitiveness, etc. These states must prepare an economic recovery plan to soften the negative effects caused by this vicious circle of harmful consequences.

Book Impact of Foreign Direct Investments on Unemployment in Emerging Market Economies

Download or read book Impact of Foreign Direct Investments on Unemployment in Emerging Market Economies written by Yilmaz Bayar and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: The goal of the paper is to investigate the long run effect of both foreign direct investments and domestic investments on the unemployment in 21 emerging economies over the period 1994-2014. Design/methodology/approach: The effect of domestic and foreign direct investments on unemployment was investigated via panel data analysis. First tests of cross-section dependence and homogeneity were conducted, and then the stationarity of the series was analyzed with Pesaran's (2007) CIPS unit root test. The long run relationship among the series was examined with Westerlund-Durbin-Hausman's (2008) co-integration test. Finally, we estimated the long run coefficients with the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) estimator. Findings: The empirical findings revealed a co-integrating relationship among domestic investments, foreign direct investments, and unemployment. Furthermore, foreign direct investment inflows affected the unemployment positively in the long term, but domestic investments affected the unemployment negatively. Originality/value: This study can be considered as one of the early studies researching the long run interaction between domestic investments, foreign direct investments and unemployment for the sample of emerging market economies. Furthermore, the findings are very meaningful for policymakers in the design the economic policies for decreasing unemployment.
