Book Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth

Download or read book Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical fitness affects our ability to function and be active. At poor levels, it is associated with such health outcomes as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Physical fitness testing in American youth was established on a large scale in the 1950s with an early focus on performance-related fitness that gradually gave way to an emphasis on health-related fitness. Using appropriately selected measures to collected fitness data in youth will advance our understanding of how fitness among youth translates into better health. In Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth, the IOM assesses the relationship between youth fitness test items and health outcomes, recommends the best fitness test items, provides guidance for interpreting fitness scores, and provides an agenda for needed research. The report concludes that selected cardiorespiratory endurance, musculoskeletal fitness, and body composition measures should be in fitness surveys and in schools. Collecting fitness data nationally and in schools helps with setting and achieving fitness goals and priorities for public health at an individual and national level.

Book excerpt: How do firms cope with changing environments? Is flexibility really the solution? Based on an Igor Ansoff Award winning study, Building the Flexible Firm shows how flexibility has become the new strategic challenge for contemporary firms. Offering a wealth of insights and based on extensive interviews with practitioners, Henk Volberda provides a strategic framework which explains what types of flexibility are effective under different organizational conditions and environmental characteristics. He also demonstrates an integrated method for diagnosing a firm's flexibility and for guiding the transition to greater flexibility and responsiveness.

Book Amino Acids Peptides and Proteins in Organic Chemistry Analysis and Function of Amino Acids and Peptides

Download or read book Amino Acids Peptides and Proteins in Organic Chemistry Analysis and Function of Amino Acids and Peptides written by and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-02-13 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the last of five books in the Amino Acids, Peptidesand Proteins in Organic Synthesis series. Closing a gap in the literature, this is the only series tocover this important topic in organic and biochemistry. Drawingupon the combined expertise of the international "who's who" inamino acid research, these volumes represent a real benchmark foramino acid chemistry, providing a comprehensive discussion of theoccurrence, uses and applications of amino acids and, by extension, their polymeric forms, peptides and proteins. The practical value of each volume is heightened by theinclusion of experimental procedures. The 5 volumes cover the following topics: Volume 1: Origins and Synthesis of Amino Acids Volume 2: Modified Amino Acids, Organocatalysis and Enzymes Volume 3: Building Blocks, Catalysis and Coupling Chemistry Volume 4: Protection Reactions, Medicinal Chemistry,Combinatorial Synthesis Volume 5: Analysis and Function of Amino Acids and Peptides Volume 5 of this series presents a wealth of methods to analyzeamino acids and peptides. Classical approaches are described, suchas X-ray analysis, chromatographic methods, NMR, AFM, massspectrometry and 2D-gel electrophoresis, as well as newerapproaches, including Surface Plasmon Resonance and arraytechnologies. Originally planned as a six volume series, Amino Acids,Peptides and Proteins in Organic Chemistry now completes withfive volumes but remains comprehensive in both scope andcoverage. ahref="http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-3527335463.html"Furtherinformation about the 5 Volume Set and purchasing details can beviewed here./a

Book Facilitating the Resettlement and Rights of Climate Refugees

Download or read book Facilitating the Resettlement and Rights of Climate Refugees written by Avidan Kent and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most significant impacts of climate change is migration. Yet, to date, climate-induced migrants are falling within what has been defined by some as a ‘protection gap’. This book addresses this issue, first by identifying precisely where the gap exists, by reviewing the relevant legal tools that are available for those who are currently, and who will in the future be displaced because of climate change. The authors then address the relevant actors; the identity of those deserving protection (displaced individuals), as well as other bearers of rights (migration-hosting states) and obligations (polluting states). The authors also address head-on the contentious topic of definitions, concluding with the provocative assertion that the term ‘climate refugees’ is indeed correct and should be relied upon. The second part of the book looks to the future by advocating specific legal and institutional pathways. Notably, the authors support the use of international environmental law as the most adequate and suitable regime for the regulation of climate refugees. With respect to the role of institutions, the authors propose a model of ‘cross-governance’, through which a more inclusive and multi-faceted protection regime could be achieved. Addressing the regulation of climate refugees through a unique collaboration between a refugee lawyer and an environmental lawyer, this book will be of great interest to scholars and professionals in fields including international law, environmental studies, refugee studies and international relations.

Book Empirical Studies of Environmental Policies in Europe

Download or read book Empirical Studies of Environmental Policies in Europe written by John W. Maxwell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visible encroachment of industrial development on the environment, and its unintended consequences, has increased public demand for better environmental management and policy. As policy makers struggle to meet these demands, empirical analysis of the effects of environmental policies is crucial for guiding the development, the implementation, and the evaluation of alternative government interventions and regulatory approaches. Such analysis is scarce, however. The need for empirical studies is particularly large in Europe, where environmental policy debates are still mainly theoretical and tend to reflect different ideological positions more than informed assessments of alternative policies. Empirical Studies of Environmental Policies in Europe presents contributions on empirical environmental policy evaluation. The individual chapters, written by authors from Europe and the US, contain quantitative studies of proposed and implemented environmental policies, at both the micro and macroeconomic levels. The policy issues studied in this volume include the 'double dividend-hypothesis' of carbon taxation, the political economy of en
