Download or read book Survey of British Commonwealth Affairs written by Nicholas Mansergh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1968. This book falls into three parts. The first gives some account of the impact of war upon the Commonwealth and upon its individual member nations; the second records the post-war changes in its composition, while the third examines some of the domestic and external problems that confronted the Commonwealth in the bleak mid-years of the century. Each of these topics, if treated exhaustively, would require a volume and what is attempted in this book is no more than the analysis of certain themes which seem to bear most closely on the idea of the Commonwealth and its place in the history of our times.

Book Embers of Empire in Brexit Britain

Download or read book Embers of Empire in Brexit Britain written by Stuart Ward and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the British Empire is long gone, it survives as a recurring flashpoint in heated debates about the present and future of Britain and the nations over which Britain once ruled. Embers of Empire in Brexit Britain turns a critical eye to the widely-held notion that the long shadow of the imperial past has much to answer for, and asks to what extent should the residual after-effects of Britain's colonial empire be taken at face value? From the 'Rhodes must fall' controversy and contested anniversaries to immigration scares and the question of what Britishness is in a post-imperial world, an eclectic mix of expert researchers, writers and commentators consider the legacy of the British empire in the battle over Brexit. As the United Kingdom haggles its way out of the European Union and casts about for an alternative future, this volume shows how the memory of the empire is still as potent a political force as ever.

Book Constitutional Change in the Commonwealth

Download or read book Constitutional Change in the Commonwealth written by Leslie Zines and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-06-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to comparative constitutional law and deals with important changes in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the original members of the present Commonwealth of Nations. It is based on lectures delivered at the University of Cambridge. The first lecture discusses the development in recent years of the constitutional autonomy of Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and its effect on the constitutions of those countries and on the concept of the 'crown'. The second lecture is concerned with methods to entrench, constitutionally, individual and democratic rights. The final lecture contrasts judicial attitudes to the interpretation of the constitutions of Canada and Australia. The conclusion is reached that although the EEC is not a federation, there is a structural similarity between the distribution of governmental power within the Community and its members, and the federal issues that arise in Canada, Australia and other federations.

Book The Oxford History of the British Empire Volume V Historiography

Download or read book The Oxford History of the British Empire Volume V Historiography written by Robin Winks and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-07-26 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of the British Empire is a major new assessment of the Empire in the light of recent scholarship and the progressive opening of historical records. From the founding of colonies in North America and the West Indies in the seventeenth century to the reversion of Hong Kong to China at the end of the twentieth, British imperialism was a catalyst for far-reaching change. The Oxford History of the British Empire as a comprehensive study helps us to understand the end of Empire in relation to its beginning, the meaning of British imperialism for the ruled as well as for the rulers, and the significance of the British Empire as a theme in world history. This fifth and final volume shows how opinions have changed dramatically over the generations about the nature, role, and value of imperialism generally, and the British Empire more specifically. The distinguished team of contributors discuss the many and diverse elements which have influenced writings on the Empire: the pressure of current events, access to primary sources, the creation of relevant university chairs, the rise of nationalism in former colonies, decolonization, and the Cold War. They demonstrate how the study of empire has evolved from a narrow focus on constitutional issues to a wide-ranging enquiry about international relations, the uses of power, and impacts and counterimpacts between settler groups and native peoples. The result is a thought-provoking cultural and intellectual inquiry into how we understand the past, and whether this understanding might affect the way we behave in the future.

Book The Empire of the Bretaignes 1175 1688 The Foundations of a Colonial System of Government

Download or read book The Empire of the Bretaignes 1175 1688 The Foundations of a Colonial System of Government written by David Fieldhouse and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1985-05-24 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume of a projected four-volume set details the impressive record of eight hundred years of English (later British) imperial rule. The editors have assembled the earliest documentary evidence necessary for a fundamental understanding of the priorities, devices, and frustrations in the British imperial experience. The documents balance the ideas, policies, and actions emanating from England with those evolving in the various colonies. This juxtaposition emphasizes the similarity of the problems experienced by the individual colonies. The documents also illustrate the relationship between constitutional developments and ideas in Britain, in individual colonies, and in the empire as a whole.

Book The treaty making power in the Commonwealth of Australia

Download or read book The treaty making power in the Commonwealth of Australia written by Günther Doeker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the relation of states, treaties are a matter of great importance. The law of treaties and the study of treaty-making procedures in municipal law systems have become both from a theoretical and practical point of view, subjects of increasing interest. The United Nations Legal Committee as well as the International Law Commission have published studies concerned with the relationship of international law and municipal law, emphasizing national practices concerning the conclusion of treaties. In the case of some countries, such as Great Britain and the United States, numerous studies of treaty making problems have been made, but much less has been published in the case of many other countries such as Australia, Canada or India. In the case of Australia, research on treaty-making has resulted in comparatively few published articles in scholarly and legal journals and only a few comments in general legal treatises. But no comprehen sive legal analysis of the subject has as yet appeared. This study aims to present a comprehensive survey and analysis of actual treaty making procedures and practices in Australia against the setting of the relevant constitutional and other legal norms of the Australian political system. The analysis of treaty-making will consider both normative and empirical legal aspects. Basic constitutional norms, legal principles derived from common and constitutional law and statutes will be discussed, as well as the actual practices and procedures used in the exercise of the treaty-making power.
