This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documents Relating to the Program of the First Hague Peace Conference An English translation of the volume is contained in the present pamphlet issued by the Division of International Law of the Carnegie Endowment for Inter national Peace, in pursuance of the policy of the Trustees to disseminate informa tion of this nature and of the specific direction of the Executive Committee in regard to the above-mentioned documents. The first part of the volume relates to the subject of the limitation of armaments, and has heretofore been issued by the Division in English translation as No. 22 of this Pamphlet Series, the supply of which has been exhausted. The footnotes of the original have been enlarged by adding biographical and bibliographical data. It will be observed that the rush-bagot Agreement between Great Britain and the United States for the limitation of armament upon the Great Lakes of North America was not included among the documents submitted by the Nether land Government to the Hague Peace Conference. As the present publication consists solely of the documents laid before the Conference, it was not deemed advisable to insert it in the text. Inasmuch, however, as one of the documents included in the collection refers to the Agreement, it is, for the sake of complete ness, added in the form of an appendix. The reader interested in the Agreement will find it most conveniently perhaps in the second of the present series of pamphlets, entitled Limitation of Armament on the Great Lakes, being 'the report made under date of December 7, 1892, by the Honorable John W. Foster, Secretary of State, to the President of the United States. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Hague Conferences and International Politics 1898 1915

Download or read book The Hague Conferences and International Politics 1898 1915 written by Maartje Abbenhuis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the extraordinary rescript by Tsar Nicholas II in August 1898 calling the world's governments to a disarmament conference, this book charts the history of the two Hague peace conferences of 1899 and 1907 – and the third conference of 1915 that was never held – using diplomatic correspondence, newspaper reports, contemporary publications and the papers of internationalist organizations and peace activists. Focusing on the international media frenzy that developed around them, Maartje Abbenhuis provides a new angle on the conferences. Highlighting the conventions that they brought about, she demonstrates how The Hague set the tone for international politics in the years leading up to the First World War, permeating media reports and shaping the views and activities of key organizations such as the inter-parliamentary union, the international council of women and the Institut de droit international (Institute of International Law). Based on extensive archival research in the Netherlands, Great Britain, Switzerland and the United States alongside contemporary publications in a range of languages, this book considers the history of the Hague conferences in a new way, and presents a powerful case for the importance of The Hague conferences in shaping twentieth century international politics.

Book The Law of Nations and Britain s Quest for Naval Security

Download or read book The Law of Nations and Britain s Quest for Naval Security written by Scott Andrew Keefer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-13 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the centenary of the Treaty of Versailles approaches, this book presents the pre-1914 precursors to the interwar naval arms treaties arising from the peace of 1919, providing a fresh perspective on arms control efforts through an interdisciplinary approach. Interweaving historical investigation with legal analysis, Scott Keefer traces the British role in the development of naval arms control, outlining the pragmatic Foreign Office approaches towards international law. By emphasizing what was possible within the existing legal system rather than attempting to create radically powerful international institutions, statesmen crafted treaties to exploit the unique pace of naval construction. Utilizing previously-overlooked archival resources, this book investigates how the great powers exploited treaties as elements of national security strategies. The result is a fuller analysis of the Hague Peace Conferences, Anglo-German discussions, and lesser known regional agreements from the American Great Lakes to South America, and a richer exploration of pre-1914 diplomacy, providing insights into how a past generation perceived questions of war and defence.
