Book Holy See s Archives as sources for American history

Download or read book Holy See s Archives as sources for American history written by Kathleen Cummings Sprows and published by Edizioni Sette Città. This book was released on 2022-05-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment in Rome of American Catholic Church’s potential and its problems began in the 1880s at the moment when the Holy See was looking for a way to overcome its political marginalization following the capture of Rome on September 20, 1870. In fact, the Vatican was transforming its world-wide religious network into a diplomatic one geared to sustain the international aims of a State that had lost its territory. Moreover, we should not underestimate the migration factor in the Italian Peninsula: the Italian diaspora was growing and Italian members of the Curia were worrying about the future of those who were flowing to the United States and other “Protestant” countries. At the same time, a number of the Vatican diplomats foresaw the shifting religious balance in North America as a result of the increase in Catholic migrants.

Book Church and State in American History

Download or read book Church and State in American History written by John Wilson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church and State in American History illuminates the complex relationships among the political and religious authority structures of American society, and illustrates why church-state issues have remained controversial since our nation’s founding. It has been in classroom use for over 50 years. John Wilson and Donald Drakeman explore the notion of America as “One Nation Under God” by examining the ongoing debate over the relationship of church and state in the United States. Prayers and religious symbols in schools and other public spaces, school vouchers and tax support for faith-based social initiatives continue to be controversial, as are arguments among advocates of pro-choice and pro-life positions. The updated 4th edition includes selections from colonial charters, Supreme Court decisions, and federal legislation, along with contemporary commentary and incisive interpretations by modern scholars. Figures as divergent as John Winthrop, Anne Hutchinson, James Madison, John F. Kennedy, and Sandra Day O’Connor speak from these pages, as do Robert Bellah, Clarence Thomas, and Ruth Bader Ginsberg. The continuing public and scholarly interest in this field, as well as a significant evolution in the Supreme Court’s church-state jurisprudence, renders this timely re-edition as essential reading for students of law, American History, Religion, and Politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides the key source materialshistorical and legalfor understanding the relationship of church and state.. The controversies surrounding aid to parochial schools, blue laws, school prayer, and birth control programs have been central to the ongoing search for the proper boundary between religious and political authority in America. This concise volume features chronologically organized selections from such official documents as colonial charters, court opinions, and legislation, along with incisive twentieth-century interpretations of the issues they treat. Historical figures as diverse as John F. Kennedy, Perry Miller, Reinhold Niebhur, and Paul Blanshard, together with contemporary ones illuminate the interrelationships between the legal, political, and religious structures of American society. We encounter controversies every day that concern school vouchers, prayer in schools and stadiums, religious symbols in public spaces, and tax support for faith-based social initiatives as well as arguments among advocates of "pro-choice" and "pro-life" positions. These and other issues are at the center of an ongoing search for a means to delineate the interactions among religious and political authorities-- initially in the United States but increasingly in the rest of the world as well. This concise volume presents chronologically-organized chapters that include selections from documents like colonial charters, opinions of the Supreme Court and salient legislation, along with contemporary commentary, and incisive interpretations of the issues by modern scholars. Figures as divergent as John Winthrop, John F. Kennedy, and Sandra Day OConnor speak from these pages as directly as Paul Blanshard, Reinhold Niebuhr, John Courtney Murray, and Robert Bellah. Church and State in American History addresses the difficult relationships among the political and religious structures of our society and the emergence of an American solution to the church-state problem.

Download or read book Discovering A Lost Heritage the Catholic Origins of America written by Adam S. Miller and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2006-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An eye-opening journey into America's past. Documents how much of the "history" that Americans have been taught in public and private schools and promoted in establishment history texts is at the least, distorted; at worst, it is myth. Before America became a land of predominantly English Protestants, it was a land explored and settled by Irish, Scottish, Spanish, and French Catholics. This work documents that the first known explorers, pioneers, and settlers of America were Catholic. Of the 48 Continental States, Catholics settled first in thirty-three, while Protestants were first in only fifteen. For example: Did you know:-that there were settlements by Catholics in New England before the Pilgrims arrived in 1620?-that Catholics had explored and established settlements in Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia before Jamestown was settled in 1607?-that Catholics had celebrated the truly first Thanksgiving feast in America eighty years before the Pilgrims did?

Book American Catholic History

Download or read book American Catholic History written by Mark Massa and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview in primary documents of almost four hundred years of the American Catholic experience Catholics were among the early Spanish explorers to the “New World,” and they have a long and rich history in the United States. By taking account of significant letters, diaries, theological reflections, and other primary documents, we can listen to the voices of what real Catholics in this country have thought, believed, feared, and dreamed. American Catholic History makes available original documents produced in North America from the earliest missionary voyages in the sixteenth century up to the present day. The texts have been selected to illuminate the complex history, beliefs, and practices of what has become North American Roman Catholicism. They are prefaced by brief editorial introductions which provide historical and biographical context for the texts. They illuminate broad themes in the development of the tradition, from its grappling with new frontiers to its long-time status as outside mainstream culture, and from its intellectual life and political engagement to patterns of worship and spirituality. American Catholic History offers an overview of the American Catholic experience from both the “top down” of institutional and intellectual history as well as from the “bottom up” of social, devotional, women's and ethnic histories.
