It is now ten years since the discontinuance of the State tax. The General Fund then accumulated, with an inconsiderable in come from other sources, besides paying two hundred and ninety four thousand one hundred and eleven dollars and sixty-nine cents for the support of the lateral canals, and many large appropria tions for other objects, has sustained the ordinary expenses of the government far beyond the period anticipated when the State tax was discontinued. This fund is now not only exhausted, but the State at the end of the last fiscal year, was in debt to other funds for the current expenses of the treasury, four hundred and six thou sand and sixty-eight dollars and ninety-seven cents. George, in this state, whence the family soon moved into Montgomery county; mother died when he was 10; soon after, bound out to A. M. a farmer in Herkimer county; left him at 19, because he refused to send him to school as he agreed; went to work in the neighbourhood; used to meet M. and his son frequently, and being often urged by them to try his luck in passing counterfeit money, finally took some, and passed 30 or 40 dollars before he was detected; says it was the first he ever attempted to pass. Convicted in Herkimer county, March 12, 1827, and sentenced 7 years. Says the M's were both arrested on the same charge, but the son turned state's evidence, and thus cleared his lather and convicted him. Says he has always been a steady, sober, hard working boy; had no peace after he took up his dishonest practices, and shall be sure to avoid them in future. Education very poor; has been in our Sunday school. Discharged by pardon, Jan. 24, 1829. He appears to be a simple inoffensive sort of fellow, probably led into crime by more practised villains. No. 306.--J. T.--Age 36; born and, brought up in Canaan, Conn.; lived with parents till about 25; learnt the blacksmithing business; was a steady, industrious boy, and addicted to no baa habits in youth; came into this state 10 or 12 years ago, and carried on business in Tioga county; married about the same time; got into difficulty with father-in-law, who prejudiced his wife against him, and finally persuaded her to leave him; to drown trouble took to drinking; became a perfect sot; father-in-law took his oath that he was afraid of his life, and got him into jail; where he kept him till he consented to give up his land; upon his release, went into Broome county; went into a house, drunk and...
