To these views I refer you with an urgent request that you will not sufl'er this session to pass without satisfying a claim supported by so many and such powerful considerations. It is now ten years since the discontinuance of the State tax. The General Fund then accumulated, with an inconsiderable in come from other sources, besides paying two hundred and ninety four thousand one hundred and eleven dollars and sixty-nine cents for the support of the lateral canals, and many large appropria tions for other objects, has sustained the ordinary expenses of the government far beyond the period anticipated when the State tax was discontinued. This fund is now not only exhausted, but the State at the end of the last fiscal year, was in debt to other funds for the current expenses of the treasury, four hundred and six thou sand and sixty-eight dollars and ninety-seven cents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documents of the Senate of the State of New York, Fifty-Seventh Session, 1834, Vol. 1: From No. 1 to 50 Inclusive Economy is the virtue of republican governments, but it is as distinguishable from parsimony as from profusion. It requires that faithful public services should be fully, and no more than fully, paid; and it is as much the duty of the Legislature to bring to this standard, salaries that are too low, as those that are too high. In forming an Opinion as to the compensation to be given to judges, it is proper to look at all the circumstances connected with the subject; to their situation, which necessarily debars them from all private pursuits; to their qualifications, which result from a union of moral worth, high intellectual powers, and extensive acquire ments; to the services they are required to perform, which. Book excerpt: A "fascinating and provocative" story (The Washington Post) of high stakes competition between two titans that shows how the electric chair developed through an effort by one nineteenth-century electric company to discredit the other. In 1882, Thomas Edison ushered in the “age of electricity” when he illuminated Manhattan’s Pearl Street with his direct current (DC) system. Six years later, George Westinghouse lit up Buffalo with his less expensive alternating current (AC). The two men quickly became locked in a fierce rivalry, made all the more complicated by a novel new application for their product: the electric chair. When Edison set out to persuade the state of New York to use Westinghouse’s current to execute condemned criminals, Westinghouse fought back in court, attempting to stop the first electrocution and keep AC from becoming the “executioner’s current.” In this meticulously researched account of the ensuing legal battle and the horribly botched first execution, Moran raises disturbing questions not only about electrocution, but about about our society’s tendency to rely on new technologies to answer moral questions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many Civil War reference books exist, there is no single compendium that contains important details about the combatant states (and territories) that Civil War researchers can readily access for their work. People looking for information about the organizations, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Civil War States and state governments must assemble data from a variety of sources, with many key sources remaining unavailable online. This crucial reference book, the fifth in the States at War series, provides vital information on the organization, activities, economies, demographics, and prominent personalities of Ohio during the Civil War. Its principal sources include the Official Records, state adjutant-general reports, legislative journals, state and federal legislation, federal and state executive speeches and proclamations, and the general and special orders issued by the military authorities of both governments, North and South. Designed and organized for easy use by professional historians and amateurs, this book can be read in two ways: by individual state, with each chapter offering a stand-alone history of an individual stateÕs war years; or across states, comparing reactions to the same event or solutions to the same problems.
