Book France in Black Africa

Download or read book France in Black Africa written by Francis Terry McNamara and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When, in 1960, France granted independence to its colonies in West and Central Africa-an empire covering an area the size of the contiguous United States-the French still intended to retain influence in Africa. Through a system of accords with these newly independent African nations, based upon ties naturally formed over the colonial years, France has succeeded for three decades in preserving its position in African affairs. The course of Franco-African relations in the near future, though, is less than certain. In this book, Ambassador Francis Terry McNamara outlines France's acquisition and administration of its Black African empire and traces the former colonies' paths to independence. Drawing upon that background, the ambassador examines the structure of post-independence Franco-African relations and recent strains on those relations, especially African economic crises and the French tendency to focus on Europe. Because of those strains, he suggests, France alone may be unable to support its former dependencies much longer. He believes that long-term solutions to African problems will have to involve international organizations like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund as well as other nations such as the United States and France's European partners. -- From Foreword.

Book The Rule of Law in International Affairs

Download or read book The Rule of Law in International Affairs written by Ian Brownlie and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1998-08-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of a carefully edited version of the General Course on Public International Law delivered at the Hague Academy of International Law to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of the United Nations. The author brings to them not only his background of academic distinction, but his experience as a practitioner concerned with major international legal issues. The rule of law in international affairs is a question of perennial concern but it is of greater moment these days for a number of reasons. The active agenda of the Security Council and its relative solidarity creates a paradox. Its increased political power is a source of hope but the modalities of the exercise of power present problems of principle and of legal concern. Another area of concern is the International Court, which has had a successful record since the early eighties and provides one of the guarantees of the maintenance of legality. Recent successes of the Court include the effective resolution of the territorial dispute between Chad and Libya. The general level of compliance with its decisions by States is impressive. Yet its success is matched not by encouragement and enhancement of its facilities but by United Nations financial constraints which hinder its work and, ultimately, may threaten its independence in relation to the political organs of the United Nations.

Book Age of the Democratic Revolution A Political History of Europe and America 1760 1800 Volume 1

Download or read book Age of the Democratic Revolution A Political History of Europe and America 1760 1800 Volume 1 written by R. R. Palmer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Western world as a whole, the period from about 1760 to 1800 was the great revolutionary era in which the outlines of the modern democratic state came into being. It is the thesis of this major work that the American, French, and Polish revolutions, and the movements for political change in Britain, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Sweden, and other countries, though each distinctive in its own way, were all manifestations of recognizably similar political ideas, needs, and conflicts.

Book Confronting the Enemy Within

Download or read book Confronting the Enemy Within written by Peter Chalk and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2004-04-22 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, critics have charged that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, while qualified to investigate terrorist incidents after the fact, is not well equipped enough to adequately gather and assess information to prevent attacks. More intrinsically, many believe that given a predominant and deeply rooted law enforcement and prosecutorial culture, the bureau may not be able to change operational focus toward dedicated counterterrorism intelligence gathering and analysis. To better inform debate, researchers analyzed the domestic security structures of four allied countries--the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Australia--weighing both their positive and negative aspects. Download or read book The Ancien R gime written by Catherine Betty Abigail Behrens and published by W. W. Norton. This book was released on 1967 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term, "Ancien Régime", was first used by contemporaries to describe retrospectively the social and political structure in France which the Revolution destroyed. It is shown here to be applicable also to different countries at different dates -- for example, to Russia at the end of the nineteenth century -- but it is discussed principally in relation to France in the fateful years between 1748 and 1789. This is the study of a complex society -- its economy, institutions and beliefs, and their erosion by material and ideological change.
