Book The Art of Translation

Download or read book The Art of Translation written by Jirí Levý and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jirí Levý's seminal work, The Art of Translation, considered a timeless classic in Translation Studies, is now available in English. Having drawn on adjacent disciplines, the methodology of Czech functional sociosemiotic structuralism and the state-of-the art in the West, Levý synthesized his findings and experience in the field presenting them in a reader-friendly book, which combines the approaches of a theoretician, systemic analyst, historian, critic, teacher, practitioner and populariser. Although focused on literary translation from theoretical, descriptive and historical perspectives, it presents a conceptualization of a general theory, addressing a number of issues discussed today. The 'practical' mission of the book as a theory extending to practice is based on the same historical-dialectic affinity of methods, norms, functions and values, accounting for the translator's agency and other contextual agents involved in the communication process. The book will be useful to translators, researchers, students and teachers in Translation and Literary Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this engaging book—the first to historicize our understanding of sexual harassment in the workplace—Julie Berebitsky explores how Americans' attitudes toward sexuality and gender in the office have changed since the 1860s, when women first took jobs as clerks in the U.S. Treasury office. Berebitsky recounts the actual experiences of female and male office workers; draws on archival sources ranging from the records of investigators looking for waste in government offices during World War II to the personal papers of Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown and Ms. magazine founder Gloria Steinem; and explores how popular sources—including cartoons, advertisements, advice guides, and a wide array of fictional accounts—have represented wanted and unwelcome romantic and sexual advances. This range of evidence and the study's long scope expose both notable transformations and startling continuities in the interplay of gender, power and desire at work.

Book excerpt: Mischievous misfits, indiscriminate lovers, closet homosexuals, spoiled scoundrels and handsome legends: 'The Golden Guys of MGM' uncovers the real lives of America's royalty during its heyday. Clark Gable, John Gilbert, Val Johnson, Mickey Rooney, Frank Sinatra and Spencer Tracy were the most admired and beloved actors in the history of Hollywood. Under the watchful eye of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer potentate Louis B Mayer they were pampered and protected, moulded and sculptured, glamorised and perfected. There were no secrets at MGM - who was sleeping with whom was well known to all. Spencer Tracy, John Barrymore and Robert Walker were dedicated alcoholics; Tracy, a married Catholic, had affairs with most of his leading ladies; Clark Gable had too many love affairs to mention, declaring he had 'had every one' of the MGM girls; while Sinatra romanced Lana Turner, Marilyn Maxwell, Marlene Dietrich and Ava Gardner while he was married. Download or read book Automatic Woman written by Katharine Conley and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary feminist critics have often described Surrealism as a misogynist movement. In Automatic Woman, Katharine Conley addresses this issue, confirming some feminist allegations while qualifying and overturning others. Through insightfuløanalyses of works by a range of writers and artists, Conley develops a complex view of Surrealist portrayals of Woman. Conley begins with a discussion of the composite image of Woman developed by such early male Surrealists as Andrä Breton, Francis Picabia, and Paul Eluard. She labels that image ?Automatic Woman??a term that comprises views of Woman as provocative and revolutionary but also as a depersonalized object largely devoid of individuality and volition. This analysis largely confirms feminist critiques of Surrealism. The heart of the book, however, examines the writings of Leonora Carrington and Unica Z_rn, two women in the Surrealist movement whose works, Conley argues, anticipate much contemporary feminist art and theory. In concluding, Conley shows how Breton?s own views on women evolved in the course of his long career, arriving at last at a position far more congenial to contemporary feminists. Automatic Woman is distinguished by Katharine Conley?s judicious understanding of how women?and the image of Woman?figured in Surrealism. The book is an important contemporary account of a cultural movement that continues to fascinate, influence, and provoke us.
