Book Translating Trans Identity

Download or read book Translating Trans Identity written by Emily Rose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which translation deals with sexual and textual undecidability, adopting an interdisciplinary approach bridging translation, transgender studies, and queer studies in analyzing the translations of six texts in English, French, and Spanish labelled as ‘trans.’ Rose draws on experimental translation methods, such as the use of the palimpsest, and builds on theory from areas such as philosophy, linguistics, queer studies, and transgender studies and the work of such thinkers as Derrida and Deleuze to encourage critical thinking around how all texts and trans texts specifically work to be queer and how queerness in translation might be celebrated. These texts illustrate the ways in which their authors play language games and how these can be translated between languages that use gender in different ways and the subsequent implications for our understanding of the act of translation and how we present our gender identity or identities. In showing what translation and transgender identity can learn from one another, Rose lays the foundation for future directions for research into the translation of trans identity, making this book key reading for scholars in translation studies, transgender studies, and queer studies.

Book excerpt: Cahiers Parisiens/Parisian Notebooks publish selected papers drawn from the various advanced-level activities at the University of Chicago Center in Paris. In Volume Seven, scholars from across the continent consider Europe as a discourse made of the sediments of historical experience and utopian ideas. Attached to a geographical region with constantly shifting boundaries, the group considers EUtROPEs as the cultural codes that endow Europe with the many meanings that it has held for different actors at different times. Twenty historians, linguists, cultural scientists, musicologists, and scholars of philosophy, urban studies, and film studies who came together at the University of Chicago's Center in Paris discuss these tropes in different fields and consider whether the present can continue to bear the weight of the many ideas and legacies of Europe.

Download or read book Ancient Rome written by R. Scott Smith and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Terrific . . . exactly the sort of collection we have long needed: one offering a wide range of texts, both literary and documentary, and that--with the inclusion of Sulpicia and Perpetua--allows students to hear the voices of actual women from the ancient world. The translations themselves are fluid; the inclusion of long extracts allows students to sink their teeth into material in ways not possible with traditional source books. The anonymous texts, inscriptions, and other non-literary material topically arranged in the 'Documentary' section will enable students to see how the documentary evidence supplements or undermines the views advanced in the literary texts. This is a book that should be of great use to anyone teaching a survey of the history of Ancient Rome or a Roman Civilization course. I look forward to teaching with this book which is, I think, the best source book I have seen for the way we teach these days." --David Potter, University of Michigan

Book Translating Transgender

Download or read book Translating Transgender written by David Gramling and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of Transgender Studies Quarterly calls for multilingual and translational critique. Few primary and secondary texts about transgender lives and ideas have been translated from language to language in any formal way over the centuries. This is an important problem for transgender studies in the coming decades because an Anglophone disciplinary and discursive disposition will continue to lead policy makers, public intellectuals, and academics to fall back on ethnocentric and monolingual frameworks and resources.

He behaved in such an extraordinary manner to those who did go to see him, that they are not likely to repeat the attempt.” “How long has he been living there?” I asked. “About four years.” “I suppose that you see him sometimes?” She shook her head sadly. “Very seldom. Not oftener than I can help. He is changed so dreadfully.” “Tell me what he is like.” “Like! Do you mean personally? He is ugly—hideously ugly—especially now that he takes so little care of himself. He goes about in clothes my coachman would decline to wear, and he slouches. I think a man who slouches is detestable.”[...]".

  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Later Roman Egypt written by Roger S. Bagnall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt, with its ever-growing wealth of evidence from the papyri, has in recent decades been one of the liveliest areas of scholarship on the later Roman Empire. This volume collects two dozen articles on the social, economic, and administrative history of Egypt by Roger Bagnall, whose book 'Egypt in Late Antiquity' has helped to bring this region and this evidence into the mainstream of historical debate. In these studies some of the main themes of his work are visible, in particular attempts to explore the possibilities for quantifying not only questions like the burden of taxation or the distribution of land-ownership, but more tantalizing and controversial matters like the rate at which the population of Egypt was Christianized.
