Book excerpt: Notices of appointments, letters of commendation, tax bills, receipts, and other memoranda, dated Jan. 11, 1845-Jan. 15, 1859, pertaining to the positions of alcalde mayor which Ramírez held during ten years of service to the Crown in the Philippines. Most of the documents are notices to Ramírez of his appointment by Queen Isabella II as alcalde mayor of Tondo, Cagayan, Bulacan, and Laguna, and as Auditor de Marina and Auditor de Guerra, beginning with his initial appointment as mayor of Tondo province on Jan. 11, 1845. A letter from Treasury official J. Sandino y Miranda, dated Sept. 20, 1852 in Manila, outlines the duties of the committee to review monthly sales figures for state monopolies, with an accompanying cover sheet naming Dampierre president of the committee for Bulacan. Letters from the Contaduría General de Ejército y Hacienda and the Sociedad Filipina de Fianzas concern Ramírez's payments of taxes and the security deposit or bond required of public officials. Drafts of several letters by Ramírez from April 21-Oct 5, 1857 explain his refusal to pay the treasury additional tax payments. Letters from the Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País in Manila show that Ramírez was invited to join on April 11, 1848, and that he participated extensively in the Society's activities. Ideas from his 1855 presentation on the silk industry were sent to the minister of development for consideration. Letters from Ramírez's superiors commend him for his effective administrations as mayor, during which time roads, bridges, and barracks were built, and state monopoly sales and production increased. Also included are the decree announcing Ramírez's retirement on Sept. 24, 1855; a list from 1858 of Ramírez's merits and services; and a list from Jan. 1859 of all the appointments held by Ramírez during his ten years in the Philippines.
