Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctrine and Life: A Study of Some of the Principal Truths of the Christian Religion in Their Relation to Christian Experience The aim of this volume is to present the principal doctrines of Christianity in their correlation with the Christian life. These doctrines have therefore been approached from the point of View of the Christian consciousness rather than from that of philosophy or criticism. Our main question in this study is not, How might the Christian philosopher justify the belief under: review? Nor, How might the biblical scholar elaborate and defend it? But, What is the adaptation of the given doctrine to the needs of the soul, and its use in the Christian life? How is its truth attested in experience? Download or read book The Truth of Doctrine written by Coy Fuller and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-05-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity has been a major world religion for thousands of years. Each new incarnation-the Roman Catholic Church, the Protestant Reformation, and everything in between-has come with its own interpretation of the original teachings laid out by Jesus Christ and his disciples. Today's believers are faced with trying to wade through the various doctrines to discover the truth of God's plan, but most don't even know where to start. But for those willing to examine why they really believe what they believe, The Truth of Doctrine gives clergy and laity alike a place to start. Focusing on six key points of doctrine, Coy Fuller traces these fundamentals of faith from their origins through their many revisions throughout history to the multiple forms they take today. Filled with scripture references, insightful comparisons, and thought-provoking commentary, The Truth of Doctrine gives modern-day believers the tools to cut through the additions of man and decide for themselves what God desires to see in their lives.

Book Christian Faith and the Theological Life

Download or read book Christian Faith and the Theological Life written by Romanus Cessario and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to believe in God? This question still provokes a recalcitrant world. In spite of the apparent disinterest of our age, the religious question continues to task and to vex, sometimes quietly, sometimes dramatically. When religious divisions occasion civil strife, believers are faced with an even more radical inquiry. Wherein lies the real truth about Christian doctrine and its place in our lives? Can we appeal to any authority for belief? How do we escape the suspicions of a skeptical age? In this book, Romanus Cessario explores these questions and suggests responses taken from the history of theology. He offers a readable account of the accumulated wisdom of the Christian tradition concerning the faith-question, citing as major authorities the saints, those who have realized the will of God throughout the ages. Faith supplies not only the assurance but also the substance of things hoped for. The experience of Israel teaches that "God has foreseen something better for us"; this "something better" resides in the Word of God that takes flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary. Because it keeps being born again in the heart of every believer, as St. Thomas Aquinas reminds us, it leads us to the blessedness of eternal life. Since the end of the Second Vatican Council in 1965, authors have dealt mainly with the existential dimensions of Christian life. This volume, the fruit of more than two decades of contemplation on the virtues of Christian life, complements these as well as historical studies about faith. It presents a coherent meditation on faith's principal concerns: its acts of belief and confession, and its character as a virtue in the Christian life. Father Cessario explains how the mysteries of faith--what the Christian believer professes each Sunday in the Creed--transform our lives and make us living images of the Triune God. Consequently, this book will meet a wide range of needs by answering the questions of the informed reader, animating study groups and parish seminars, and stimulating the ordinary believer to appropriate "the depth of the riches and the wisdom and knowledge of God." ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Romanus Cessario, O.P., is professor of systematic theology at St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts. Before assuming this post in the fall of 1995, Father Cessario taught at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. He served there as Academic Dean from 1979 to 1987. He is the author of numerous works, including The Moral Virtues and Theological Ethics, Le Virtu, and Perpetual Angelus: As the Saints Pray the Rosary, and presently serves on the editorial boards of The Thomist, the French journal Pierre d'Angle, and the National Catholic Register.

Book The Great Bible Doctrines

Download or read book The Great Bible Doctrines written by William Evans and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrines treated in this book are dealt with from the standpoint of Biblical rather than Dogmatic theology. This is evident from the plan which is followed in the work, namely, to gather together all the Scripture passages dealing with the subject under consideration, and from them choose a required number that may be called representative; then seek to understand the meaning of these references by the study of the text itself as well as its context and parallel passages; and finally, from the selected proof-texts, formulate the doctrinal teaching, and place such results under appropriate headings. The doctrines of God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are more fully dealt with than the doctrines which follow. This is especially true of the doctrine of God. The reason for this is to set forth the method pursued in these studies, and to give a pattern for the study of the doctrines to follow. (William Evans, The Great Doctrines of the Bible)

Book The Principles of the Doctrine of Christ

Download or read book The Principles of the Doctrine of Christ written by J. J. Hall and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-03-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Principles of the Doctrine of Christ, the author has provided a Study Guide and commentary to encourage the understanding of the foundational tenets of Hebrews 6: 1 & 2 and facilitate their role in the believer's life. The Study Guide looks to transcend differences and promote an applied theology perspective to the subject. The goal is not to solicit conformity to a specific denominational creed, but to chart the growth events ahead for new believers, and that have been obfuscated in many seasoned Christians. The overall purpose is to articulate a clearly delineated path for the individual to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. It is the first in a series designed to orient new converts to a fruitful walk in the Lord, so that they build their faith according to the pattern revealed in the Scriptures.

Book Seven Pillars of Christianity

Download or read book Seven Pillars of Christianity written by Dr. William Ekane and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revelations contained in the Bible serve as a supreme guide by which to measure all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions—and today’s Christians are in steady moral and spiritual decline. A 2010 survey by the Barna Research Group reveals that in American churches, Christians have become less knowledgeable about the Bible, less interested in spiritual disciplines, and more desirous of secular techniques to solve life’s problems, thus blurring the distinction between their conduct and that of nonbelievers. In Seven Pillars of Christianity: An Introduction to the Essential Christian Doctrines, Dr. William Ekane reveals the life-transforming foundations of the Christian faith and issues a clarion call for Christians to return to authentic Christianity. First presenting his compelling case for the scientific reliability and divine origin of the Bible, Dr. Ekane works closely with Scripture as he leads us through everything from the Lord Jesus Christ to trust and faith in the living God to, finally, the five major judgments and Revelation. These practical, strategic insights and essential truths are invaluable to new converts as well as mature believers. The Word of the Holy Spirit offers transformation, illuminating our hearts and minds as we strengthen our spiritual foundation and grow deeper in God.

Download or read book Christian Doctrine in Rhyme written by Dr Reece B Sherman and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is Doctrine? I personally believe that the church has done a poor job in teaching doctrine to the present generation. I was brought up as a young person in the 1960's and 70's. We had a weekly class that taught us the doctrine of the Christian faith. This is sadly missing from many churches of today. What do I mean by doctrine? W. T. Conner, in his seminal work, Christian Doctrine, defines doctrine this way: "Christian Doctrine is that line of study that undertakes to set out the teachings of the Christian religion, It is the organized exposition of the main doctrines of Christianity. It is the setting out in more or less complete and systematic form of the ideas necessary to the understanding of the Christian religion." He goes on to speak of the great need of doctrine. He describes 5 reasons for the necessity of Christian doctrine. (1) The Nature of Man Necessitates Doctrine. "Men will think about religion; and when a man thinks about religion, what he thinks is his religious doctrine. ...There can be no such thing as religion without some elements of doctrine." (2) New Testament Christianity Puts Large Emphasis on Teaching. (3) A Knowledge of the Truth is Necessary in the Christian Life. (4) A Knowledge of Truth is Necessary to Propagate the Gospel. (5) A Knowledge of Truth is Necessary to a Defense of the Gospel. Basically doctrine is what Christians believe about their religion. I have sought to give the main beliefs about the Christian religion in poetic form. I have also included Scripture passages to serve as a foundation to this teaching on biblical doctrine. This should be a help for people of all ages. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 gives us a wonderful framework on the importance of learning biblical truths and teaching them to the younger generation and also living by them. 4 "Israel, remember this! The LORD-and the LORD alone-is our God. 5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 Never forget these commands that I am giving you today. 7 Teach them to your children. Repeat them when you are at home and when you are away, when you are resting and when you are working. 8 Tie them on your arms and wear them on your foreheads as a reminder. 9 Write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates.
