Book excerpt: "Doctorate Recipients from U.S. Universities: Summary Report 2007-08" is the 41st in a series of reports on research doctorates awarded by universities in the United States. Data presented in this report were collected by the Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED). The SED, which has been conducted annually since 1957, is a census of all individuals who receive a research doctorate from a U.S. academic institution in a given academic year (July 1 through June 30 of the following year). This report presents data from the 2007 and 2008 SED. The 2008 census covered 48,802 individuals who earned research doctorates in the academic year ending June 2008; the 2007 census covered 48,112 individuals who earned research doctorates in the academic year ending June 2007. The body of this report discusses the results of the 2008 SED, beginning with a summary of key findings. Trends in the numbers and percentages of doctorate recipients through 2008 are reported by the broad fields in which doctorate recipients earn their degrees, and by sex, race/ethnicity, and citizenship. Cross-sectional data on the educational pathways that doctorate recipients take to the research doctorate are reported for the 2008 cohort, as well as data on the average amount of time taken to complete the doctoral degree, doctorate recipients reporting disabilities, sources of financial support during graduate school, and the postgraduation status and plans of doctorate recipients. The data tables follow the main text, beginning with summary data tables for 2008 (tables 1-35), which display the numbers and percentages from which the figures and the numbers cited in the text are drawn. Detailed data tables for 2008 research doctorate recipients (tables 36-46) and for the previous 10-year period (1998-2008, tables 47-50) follow the summary 2008 data tables. Data collected by the 2007 SED are presented as a data supplement without accompanying narrative. These supplementary summary and detailed data tables follow the 2008 tables. Appended are: (1) Technical Notes; and (2) Survey of Earned Doctorates Questionnaires. (Contains 10 footnotes, 20 figures, and 106 tables.).

Book excerpt: The Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) collects data on the number and characteristics of individuals receiving research doctoral degrees from all accredited U.S. institutions. The results of this annual survey are used to assess characteristics and trends in doctorate education and degrees. This information is vital for education and labor force planners and researchers in the federal government and in academia. To protect the confidentiality of data, new and more stringent procedures were implemented for the 2006 SED data released in 2007. These procedures suppressed many previously published data elements. The organizations and institutions that had previously relied on these data to assess progress in measure of achievement and equality suddenly found themselves without a yardstick with which to measure progress. Several initiatives were taken to address these concerns, including the workshop summarized in this volume. The goal of the workshop was to address the appropriateness of the decisions that SRS made and to help the agency and data users consider future actions that might permit release of useful data while protecting the confidentiality of the survey responses.

Book excerpt: This book is the outcome of one of the Forum Series on Architectural Education, organized by the Architectural Education Association of Turkey (MIMED) on the theme of “Flexibility in Architecture.” At Forum IV, the architectural education platform was cross-examined, new ideas and experiences were shared, and the potentials of “regeneration” were discovered. The notion of flexibility in architectural education is the subject of fresh and vital debate which is based on whether it is achieved by the inner dynamics of architecture, or the external dynamics. However, this debate seems null and void since the dynamics of both sides seem to necessitate flexibility in architectural education at almost the same level. Hence the attitude that the prerequisite for creating flexibility according to the inner dynamics of architecture depends on the protection of architectural education from the coercive effects of external dynamics is no longer a relevant issue. Furthermore, architectural education as a role model in such a debate becomes more important, not only in a monotyping global context, but also in the local social context as well. Herein lies a fundamental dichotomy arising from the fact that because of globalization curricula may face the risk of becoming uniform. Any effort to overcome this dichotomy in such a debate seems vital. Then, the question arises whether such a dichotomy, which turns architectural education from an autonomous discipline into a quasi-autonomous one, transforms architectural education into a rather political issue. If the autonomous nature of architectural education resists globalization, the question of the manner in which this resistance occurs and what impact it will have on architectural education seems of the utmost importance.
