Book Doctoral Scientists in Oceanography

Download or read book Doctoral Scientists in Oceanography written by National Research Council (U.S.). Ocean Sciences Board. Manpower Trends and Curriculum Needs Panel and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report was to classify and count doctoral scientists in the United States trained in oceanography and/or working in oceanography. Existing data from three sources (National Research Council's "Survey of Earned Doctorates," and "Survey of Doctorate Recipients," and the Ocean Sciences Board's "U.S. Directory of Marine Scientists"), were used to determine the numbers and training of scientists in various ocean science fields, the number of Ph.D.s per year receiving degrees in various fields of ocean science, current employment of oceanographers, and patterns of mobility by trained persons into and out of the ocean sciences. Data analysis is presented under three major headings called: population of doctoral scientists, their education, and demography. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations made relative to the direct training of doctorates in contemporary ocean science, the role of doctorates not obtained specifically in oceanography, the problem of supply and demand, and institutional arrangements and records.
