Book excerpt: Her Brentwood home became a hotbed for homicide. But in the wake of intense public and media attention, one saliant and hard truth was often overlooked: the murder of Nicole Brown-Simpson, while brutal and heinous in its form, was just one of thousands of homicides committed during that same year. Most escaped the scrutiny of public interest. Many never made it to trial, and still others were dismissed as natural deaths-perfect crimes that remain forever unsolved. How, then, do investigators solve a murder when the trail goes cold? Like mariners navigating without landmarks under a starless night sky-lacking a reliable witness or smoking gun-they plot their course through the clues by applying their own style of Dead Reckoning, reconstructing the crime by disciplined observation, careful reasoning, and experience. Dead Reckoning: The Art of Forensic Detection examines the applications of logic and science to decipher chaotic death scenes and difficult cases, and to derive orderly explanations from their jumbled clues. The 10 case studies in this book illustrate the powers of observation exercised in reading the signs, identifying them as clues, and reasoning from them to the best explanation. For investigators, as well as forensic pathologists, coroners, prosecutors, and defense attorneys, Dead Reckoning: The Art of Forensic Detection stresses the importance of trusting your own observations even in the wake of contradictory evidence.

Book Forensic Nurse

    Book Details:
  • Author : Serita Stevens
  • Publisher : Macmillan
  • Release : 2007-04-01
  • ISBN : 1429909242
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Forensic Nurse written by Serita Stevens and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serita Stevens has published many books, from mystery novels to a description of poisonous plants. She also has long been a nurse, and it is that profession that sent her to learn more about what a nurse could do when one of her cases seemed to have a criminal or illegal side. "SleuthRN" on the Web led her to the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) and that started her off on her specialty as a forensic nurse. She took the courses that gave her training in law and medicine, learning that the number of cases that came under the umbrella of forensic is a great deal larger than she had imagined: if there is any legal aspect at all, forensics play a part. Insurance? Possible liability? Workman's compensation? All these and more join the more obvious criminal or suspected criminal cases in having "forensic" connotations. But what does the forensic nurse know and do that other well-trained nurses and even most doctors do not? Recognizing a possible forensic situation is just the beginning. Forensic nurses are trained to know when to bring in law enforcement, how to treat the patient so as to learn the full story, how to present the findings to doctors and detectives. They learn to recognize possible evidence and preserve it properly. They have particular skills in spotting details that are overlooked by those who are without medical knowledge that is coupled with law. A forensic nurse is skillful with special equipment. They photograph evidence, and may find such evasive clues as nearly invisible marks that an automobile's bumper leaves on the victim's clothing, and they know how to question a fearful child to get accurate information. They are also trained to give evidence in a court case, since nurses are almost inevitably called upon as the first witness to see the patient when he or she is brought into the emergency room, a requirement that often terrifies someone without experience or training. In fascinating informal case histories that read like stories in a novel, Stevens describes all these and many more aspects of the forensic nurse's work. Each individual case looks at the valuable "extras" these nurses bring to their medical specialty. In one case early in the book Stevens even walks us through the necessarily several-hour examination of a young female victim of sexual assault, and every reader will be amazed by the nurse's techniques, how she uses special equipment to bolster her information, and how thorough the examination must be for an accurate result. Forensic Nurse is a book that will leave every reader hoping to have this fast-growing medical specialty represented in his or her medical world, always on call if and when it is needed.

Book Joyce Medicine and Modernity

Download or read book Joyce Medicine and Modernity written by Vike Martina Plock and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2010-01-03 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce's interest in medicine has been well established--he attempted to embark on medical studies no fewer than three times--but a comprehensive assessment of the influence his interest in medicine had on his work has been lacking until now. Joyce, Medicine, and Modernity fills that gap as the first sustained study of Joyce's artistic uses of turn-of-the-century medical discourses. In this wide-ranging study, author Vike Plock balances close readings of Joyce's major texts with thorough archival research that retrieves principal late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century medical debates. The result is a fascinating book that details the ways in which Joyce reconciled, integrated, and blurred the paradigmatic boundaries between scientific and humanist learning.

Book Ethics for Nurses Theory and Practice

Download or read book Ethics for Nurses Theory and Practice written by Pam Cranmer and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics underpin all aspects of nursing activity but the concepts can often seem remote or inaccessible. This refreshing new book will help nurses explore and explain key aspects of ethical nursing practice in a practical and engaging way. Using plentiful examples and case studies, this book focuses on showing readers how to apply ethical principles to everyday nursing practice and deliver excellent care as a result. The book explores and helps answer questions such as: What are rights? What is dignity? How are nurses accountable? How does the law relate to ethics? What is a dignified death? The authors have created a set of fictional characters who experience various healthcare dilemmas and scenarios, and appear throughout the book. These characters help illustrate different aspects of ethics in healthcare and bring ethical concepts and decision making to life. This book is essential reading for nurses preparing to qualify or those already qualified and doing further study. "This is an ideal introductory text for students of nursing and other allied health professions because it is written in an accessible style. The authors discuss key ethical theories and principles but make them meaningful by applying them to contemporary scenarios in healthcare. They encourage the reader to examine their own beliefs and values and consider how these can impact on their own professional judgment and decision making." Melanie Fisher LLM (Medical Law), Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Northumbria University, UK "This is a very readable textbook that deals with the fundamentals of healthcare ethics for nurses. Starting with an introduction to the issues underpinning ethical knowledge, such as values and beliefs, it then leads into ethical concepts such as rights, dignity and accountability and concludes with specific areas of practice, such as dignified death and research. As such it would be useful reading to support an undergraduate programme introducing students to ethical theory. The use of '"think boxes'" and short exercises is particularly useful in ensuring that theory can be contextualised and made sense of by the student in real-life scenarios. Academic staff may find these useful as activities to use in workshops with students." Deborah C. Casey, Senior Lecturer in Nursing, Leeds Metropolitan University, UK "I believe strongly that there needs to be much greater understanding of moral nursing practice particularly at a time when there has been much negative press regarding poor and undignified patient care, along with a failure by nurses to advocate for the frail and vulnerable. Education requires appropriate materials to enable those learning about nursing and health care. This text succeeds in providing clear explanations of ethics for nurses in relatively plain English that will enable the essentials of moral caring behaviour. The reader is encouraged to engage with ethical concepts and principles through ‘think boxes’, ‘points for consideration’ and the ‘residents of Oak Avenue’ that facilitate linking theory to practice. Overall the reader is guided from one subject to the next through each chapter in a logical manner that gives a useful perspective to understanding the essentials for moral nursing practice." Linnette King, Principal Lecturer, Faculty of Health and Social Science, University of Brighton, UK

Book How to Treat People A Nurse s Notes

Download or read book How to Treat People A Nurse s Notes written by Molly Case and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating and poignant memoir of the body and its care, told through the experiences of a young nurse. As a teenager, Molly Case underwent an operation that saved her life. Nearly a decade later, she finds herself in the operating room again—this time as a trainee nurse. She learns to care for her patients, sharing not only their pain, but also life-affirming moments of hope. In doing so, she offers a compelling account of the processes that keep them alive, from respiratory examinations to surgical prep, and of the extraordinary moments of human connection that sustain both nurse and patient. In rich, lyrical prose, Case illustrates the intricacies of the human condition through the hand of a stranger offered in solace, a gentle word in response to fear and anger, or the witnessing of a person’s last breaths. It is these moments of empathy, in the extremis of human experience, that define us as people. But when Molly’s father is admitted to the cardiac unit where she works, the professional and the personal suddenly collide. Weaving together medical history, art, memoir, and science, How to Treat People beautifully explores the oscillating rhythms of life and death in a tender reminder that we can all find meaning in being, even for a moment, part of the lives of others.
