Book excerpt: As a port city, Dublin owes much to the labourers who strove against the heavy-duty tide of imports and exports; a league of thousands who were hired on a day-to-day basis for generations, defining the bustle of Dublin city centre – a cornerstone of the urban industrial working class in Ireland. The Dublin Docker is a sumptuously illustrated history that determines the dockers’ and stevedores’ importance as an industrial subculture within the Dublin that they navigated. The authors excavated the archive of the Dublin Dockworkers Preservation Society to discover a wealth of photographs, spanning the mid-nineteenth century to the 1970s, that capture the dockers’ arduous labour and the energy of Dublin port. These evocative images bring this beautifully designed social history to life, complementing the inimitable voices revealed in interviews with the dockers themselves. How they negotiated working hours and pay, the changes that came with epochal events – the Dublin Lockout, the First World War, the Easter Rising and War of Independence – and the innumerable myths and ‘dark stories’ that shrouded their image: The Dublin Docker is a history of the dockers and their deep-woven connection to the city.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alex Ombler's handbook is the first practical guide for family historians who wish to find out about family members who worked in British docks. In a series of concise, informative chapters he takes readers through the history of British ports and identifies research methods and materials - both local and national - through which they can discover the lives and experiences of the people who worked in them. Many of us have ancestors who were dock labourers - in 1921 there were around 125,000 dockers across a large number of British ports - and the organizational history of the dock labour force is extremely complex. As a result, the social and family lives of dockers and their communities can be difficult to research, and that is why this book is so useful. The history of the docks is covered as is the daily life of the dockers, and sections trace the development of trade unions, the experience of dock workers during the world wars and the decline of the docks in recent times. Dockland artefacts and communities are described, and there is a comprehensive directory of regional and national records.

Book Death of the Docks

Download or read book Death of the Docks written by Colin Ross and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will enlighten you as to the real hardships faced by the people in the East End after the war and how many people had to resort to illegal means in order to survive. It will explain how bad the working conditions were in the docks and why there were strikes in an attempt to rectify the chronic working conditions. But intermingled among all the hardship are stories of humour and astonishment, this is what kept us going. The book follows my working career and how I helped to create the unofficial shop stewards movement into an industrial power base that the system could not control. With the stories centre piece being the jailing of 5 London dockworkers and how we overcame everything and got them released. Read how after one off the greatest trade union victories it became the tool that ultimately defeated us. This book really questions those people who claimed to have dockworkers interest at heart, could people keep on making mistakes and continually defend the system that eventually smashed a fine industry. Also the M Ps and local councillors who stood by silently.

Book Dockers Stories from the SWW

Download or read book Dockers Stories from the SWW written by Henry T. Bradford and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dockers’ Stories from the Second World War is a collection of several true stories, drawn from Henry Bradford’s thirty-two years as a Registered Docker in the Port of London, revealing the daring deeds of docklands men in the Second World War. Men were often killed and injured during their every-day work on the docks; nonetheless, never was the bravery of these men so tested as during times of war. Henry heard many stories from dockers in his time working the docks but it was their wartime adventures that seemed most vivid: tales of bravery and escapades of men who, once the wars they had fought in were over, returned to work in the docklands of the Port of London, on the river Thames in sailing barges, or on coastal or continental short sea trading vessels.Henry Bradford’s lively stories and colourful characters reveal the bravery of ordinary men in the Second World War, from Captain Jim Fryer’s ship towage work on Calais roads and Dunkirk beaches, and saving lives of survivors from the bombed hospital ship Paris, for which he was awarded the DSC, to Petty Officer Jack Hicks’ quieter but equally memorable posting steering a clinker-built boat on a hush-hush job from the Thames to the north-east, his crew consisting only of an inexperienced co-man and an incredibly efficient WREN. Heroes of London’s Docklands is sure to appeal to those whose relatives worked as dockers, and to anyone with an interest in London’s East End at war.

Book excerpt: Workers who loaded and unloaded ships have formed a distinctive occupational group over the past two centuries. As trade expanded so the numbers of dock labourers increased and became concentrated in the major ports of the world. This ambitious two-volume project goes beyond existing individual studies of dock workers to develop a genuinely comparative international perspective over a long historical period. Volume 1 contains studies of 22 major ports worldwide. Built around an agreed framework of issues, these 'port studies' examine the type of workers who dominated dock labour, their race, class and ethnicity, the working conditions of dockers and the role of government as employer, arbitrator and supporter. The studies also detail how dockers organized their labour, patterns of strike action and involvement in political organizations. The structure of the port city is also outlined and descriptions given of the waterside environment. These areas of investigation form the basis for a series of 11 thematic studies which comprise Volume 2. Drawing on the information provided in the port studies, these essays identify important aspects and recurring themes, and explain how and why particular cases diverge from the rest. The final chapter of the book synthesizes the various approaches taken to offer a model which suggests several configurations of dock labour and presents suggestions for future research. This major scholarly achievement represents the most sustained attempt to date to provide a comparative international history of dock labour. An annotated bibliography completes this essential reference work.
