Book The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night Complete

Download or read book The Book of the Thousand Nights and One Night Complete written by Sir Richard Francis Burton and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on with total page 13551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present is, I believe, the first complete translation of the great Arabic compendium of romantic fiction that has been attempted in any European language comprising about four times as much matter as that of Galland and three times as much as that of any other translator known to myself; and a short statement of the sources from which it is derived may therefore be acceptable to my readers. Three printed editions, more or less complete, exist of the Arabic text of the Thousand and One Nights; namely, those of Breslau, Boulac (Cairo) and Calcutta (1839), besides an incomplete one, comprising the first two hundred nights only, published at Calcutta in 1814. Of these, the first is horribly corrupt and greatly inferior, both in style and completeness, to the others, and the second (that of Boulac) is also, though in a far less degree, incomplete, whole stories (as, for instance, that of the Envier and the Envied in the present volume) being omitted and hiatuses, varying in extent from a few lines to several pages, being of frequent occurrence, whilst in addition to these defects, the editor, a learned Egyptian, has played havoc with the style of his original, in an ill-judged attempt to improve it, producing a medley, more curious than edifying, of classical and semi-modern diction and now and then, in his unlucky zeal, completely disguising the pristine meaning of certain passages. The third edition, that which we owe to Sir William Macnaghten and which appears to have been printed from a superior copy of the manuscript followed by the Egyptian editor, is by far the most carefully printed and edited of the three and offers, on the whole, the least corrupt and most comprehensive text of the work. I have therefore adopted it as my standard or basis of translation and have, to the best of my power, remedied the defects (such as hiatuses, misprints, doubtful or corrupt passages, etc.) which are of no infrequent occurrence even in this, the best of the existing texts, by carefully collating it with the editions of Boulac and Breslau (to say nothing of occasional references to the earlier Calcutta edition of the first two hundred nights), adopting from one and the other such variants, additions and corrections as seemed to me best calculated to improve the general effect and most homogeneous with the general spirit of the work, and this so freely that the present version may be said, in great part, to represent a variorum text of the original, formed by a collation of the different printed texts; and no proper estimate can, therefore, be made of the fidelity of the translation, except by those who are intimately acquainted with the whole of these latter. Even with the help of the new lights gained by the laborious process of collation and comparison above mentioned, the exact sense of many passages must still remain doubtful, so corrupt are the extant texts and so incomplete our knowledge, as incorporated in dictionaries, etc, of the peculiar dialect, half classical and half modern, in which the original work is written. One special feature of the present version is the appearance, for the first time, in English metrical shape, preserving the external form and rhyme movement of the originals, of the whole of the poetry with which the Arabic text is so freely interspersed. This great body of verse, equivalent to at least ten thousand twelve-syllable English lines, is of the most unequal quality, varying from poetry worthy of the name to the merest doggrel, and as I have, in pursuance of my original scheme, elected to translate everything, good and bad (with a very few exceptions in cases of manifest mistake or misapplication), I can only hope that my readers will, in judging of my success, take into consideration the enormous difficulties with which I have had to contend and look with indulgence upon my efforts to render, under unusually irksome conditions, the energy and beauty of the original, where these qualities exist, and in their absence, to keep my version from degenerating into absolute doggrel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did the Prophet look like and why did only a small handful of Sahaba describe his physical characteristics? Why did the Prophet enjoin us to express fealty to Muslim leaders even when they were corrupt? What happen to an umma that is deprived of leadership? What is bay’a, is it necessary and what does it mean for Muslims today? How do we call people to Allah and is da'wah work for everyone? Maulana Yusuf Kandhelawi answers all these questions and much more through the beautiful and enlightening stories of the Sahaba. Since Hayat al-Sahaba first came out, it has inspired millions to understand Islam beyond concept, theory and interpretations of religious text. It immerses us into the reality of how Islam can be lived and applied in any time, past, present and future and that we all can be shaded by the mercy of Allah despite our differences like the Sahaba who despite their different personalities and temperaments all achieved the pleasure of Allah. A thousand talks on taqwa and love for Allah and His Prophet could not help us understand what one anecdote of the taqwa of the Sahaba and their love for Allah and His Prophet can teach us about the values and meanings we hold dear to our hearts as believers in Allah and His final Prophet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of Europe was ablaze when Clair M. Callan was born in 1940 as World War II raged across the continent. Although her home in Sandycove in neutral Ireland was peaceful and safe, the war had a great effect on her and her family. In Standing My Ground, Callan provides insight into the shaping of her life. This memoir spans the arc of Callans lifeseven decadesas a school girl in Ireland, a wife, mother, doctor, and eventually a business executive in America. Callan recounts how she partially cracked the glass ceiling to upper management at a time when it seemed impenetrable to women in the workplace world. While employed in different medical environments she created innovative approaches to healthcare and improved patient safety and quality. Starting with her early years, a time of privation during World War II in Ireland, through an uncertain move to America during Vietnam, it ends in an era of plenty in Illinois in the twenty-first century. Standing My Ground offers practical lessons from her life, illustrating how one can advance in a competitive environment, no matter what ones sex.

Download or read book First Do No Harm written by Lisa Belkin and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Crammed with provocative insights, raw emotion, and heartbreaking dilemmas,” (The New York Times) First, Do No Harm is a powerful examination of how life and death decisions are made at a major metropolitan hospital in Houston, as told through the stories of doctors, patients, families, and hospital administrators facing unthinkable choices. What is life worth? And when is a life worth living? Journalist Lisa Belkin examines how these questions are asked and answered over one dramatic summer at Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. In an account that is fascinating, revealing, and almost novelistic in its immediacy, Belkin takes us inside a major hospital and introduces us to the people who must make life and death decisions every day. As we walk through the hallways of the hospital we meet a young pediatrician who must decide whether to perform a risky last-ditch surgery on a teenager who has spent most of his fifteen years in a hospital; we watch as new parents battle with doctors over whether to disconnect their fragile, premature twins from the machine that keeps them breathing; we are in the operating room as a poor immigrant, paralyzed from a gunshot in the neck, is asked by doctors whether or not he wishes to stay alive; we witness the worry of a kidney specialist as he decides whether or not to transfer an uninsured baby to the county hospital down the road. We experience critical moments in the lives of these real people as Belkin explores challenging issues and questions involving medical ethics, human suffering, modern technology, legal liability, and financial reality. As medical technology advances, the choices grow more complicated. How far should we go to save a life? Who decides? And who pays?

Book The Zodiac Conspiracy Your Real Sun Sign

Download or read book The Zodiac Conspiracy Your Real Sun Sign written by Dr. Atara and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-14 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of an astronomer, who was discussing the 13th constellation on national TV last year, caused a huge outcry from the public. The big question was, "How can my sun sign be different?" Many people concluded that the astronomer did not know what he was talking about! People wanted to know how their Sun sign could be different than what they had been told all these years. Actually, the astronomer was very correct; he was telling everyone the truth as indicated by the science of astronomy, which the psycholgical art of astrology is based upon. There are 13 constellations and has always been 13. This is why the book also features a section on Ophiuchus, which is the 13th constellation and the only constellation/sign named after a human being, Imhotep an African Egyptian. There has been a conspiracy of silence among Western astrologers to misrepresent the history of astrology and ignore the truth of astronomy. Since astrologers did not adhere to the science of astronomy, as dictated by the constellations, they created an alternative paradigm called the Koch zodiac system, which only acknowledges 12 constellations and therefore 12 signs. Astrologers who live in the Eastern part of the world practice the truth of astronomy by using the Sidereal zodiac system. Most people in the Western world actually believe that on January 1st their Sun sign is Capricorn. However, the truth is that the Sun is actually in the constellation of Sagittarius. This is the truth of astronomy and the sidereal zodiac system. So, if you were born on January 1st (of any year) your Real Sun Sign is Sagittarius (not Capricorn). This book shows everyone (who wants to continue believing in their old "sign", while embracing the truth of their Real Sun Sign), how to blend these two systems, so that who you REALLY ARE and what you are destined to learn about yourself, is anchored in the truth. It is a gentle reminder that you are not living your most authentic self. Are you the Virgo, Selfless Servant or Aquarius, The Giver? Read, the Zodiac Conspiracy and be introduced to the truth and Your Real Sun Sign.
